Call of Duty: Modern Warfare almost brings the franchise back to its roots with a meaningful campaign that includes memorable characters and a horrifying depiction of war, but falls short when it comes to the traditional multiplayer. New modes like Gunfight and Realism are highlights and the core game still feels as good as ever, but it won't save you from getting continuously spawn camped.

After punting on a campaign mode in BLOPS4, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare represents a welcome return to form for a franchise that appeared to be on a downward trend. The more deliberate pace for multiplayer, especially for Ground War mode, might feel clunky to folks who prefer more fast-paced action. This one, however, feels more like a complete game than its predecessor. It still might not be the best COD ever for a lot of folks. But it’s certainly the best COD in quite some time, especially if you’ve been disappointed by games such as Advanced Warfare and Infinite Warfare.

Overall, I really have enjoyed my time with this game. The campaign was very enjoyable and definitely worth a playthrough. The voice acting was spot on and the visuals were amazing. Obviously, the multiplayer is the bread and butter of this franchise, and I have really lost track of time during my gaming sessions playing this. While it does have its flaws, I find the positives outweighing the negatives and with all the updates that Activision has been pumping out, the negatives will soon be an afterthought.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is the fresh start that the series desperately needed. This reboot of a modern classic has everything folks once loved about the CoD franchise, and lays an exciting foundation for the series moving forward.

The campaign is done well, the cooperative multiplayer is challenging, and the adversarial multiplayer is arguably better than it has ever been. Perhaps most importantly, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare appeals to long-standing fans and new players alike.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is another solid entry in the yearly franchise that really freshens up things. The campaign is excellent with Spec-ops being a viable alternative to the Zombies mode from the previous game. The multiplayer however is frustrating to play for series veterans like me who buy the game each year for the multiplayer.

Crammed with different modes and maps, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare offers extensive multiplayer possibilities. The online action is slower, with emphasis on sound cues and open maps, and the campaign is better than average thanks to mission variety and choreographed house incursions. Despite the PC technical issues, it is a noteworthy reboot.

Infinity Ward the producers behind the first Call of Duty, and possibly the most successful and critically acclaimed Modern Warfare games (Modern Warfare 1 & 2) are at the helm again taking us back to our favourite protagonists in the franchise.

A beast of an engine and impressive systems are behind Call of Duty: Modern Warfare but the multiplayer is mostly filled with design frustration and as hard-hitting the single-player feels, it's ultimately filled with no substance and afraid to make the hard choices it asks of its characters.

It's easy to pick apart these components when isolated, but where does Modern Warfare stand among other Call of Duty games as a whole? It's certainly the best Call of Duty game we've received in years, but exactly where it falls will depend on how favorably you view the older games and how influenced you are by nostalgia. Its campaign is exemplary, and even if people have inevitable complaints and suggestions about the multiplayer mode, it feels like the culmination of what people have been asking for since the days of wall-running and questionable gadgets. One thing is clear though: Modern Warfare definitely has the potential to be people's favorite Call of Duty game, but the games-as-a-service model will mean its up to Infinity Ward and Activision to make sure that potential is realized in the coming months.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare combination of modes is an easy recommendation for long time enthusiasts. However, the campaign feels really short and not up to expectation, and multiplayers modes feel hasty put together and throw around without real consideration of what works and what not.

The graphics, particularly lighting and shadow effects, have come a long way and really show up last year's Black Ops 4. Crucially, every weapon is exhilarating to fire, bolstered by fantastic animation and sound design, and during frenetic firefights that audio has to be heard to be believed. It's a shame that the multiplayer remains underwhelming but the campaign is outstanding.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a return to the series roots along with the lessons learned from over two decades of being a mega franchise. Old school fans of the original trilogy will enjoy it for the nostalgia while new fans will be introduced to a true military shooter.

Kudos to Infinity Ward for going all out with Modern Warfare. It truly feels like they're back in the driver's seat, making me forget all about Ghosts with an entry grounded in reality and jam-packed with content.

A passable entry in the long-running series, the latest Modern Warfare is polished but lacks creativity. It’s certainly more of the same as a return to a once-beloved sub-series.

As a soft reboot, Infinity Ward kept the better aspects of Call of Duty (i.e. tight controls, high production value, loads of content) and smoothed out some of its blemishes (i.e. overly simplistic storytelling and an over-reliance on extreme drama). It’s a solid game that mixes things up a little bit but not too radically.

Infinity Ward shows some serious improvements when it comes to online components, but it's hard to say the same about the story.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare refreshes the formula by rooting itself more firmly in realism and adopting a grittier approach to both combat and to its Campaign's story.

Although not quite the return to greatness that many fans were hoping for, this reboot of the Modern Warfare series manages to hold its own against the glut of online shooters currently available and offers enough tweaks and revisions to the core gameplay to justify dipping into yet another annual instalment.

Modern Warfare is the title Call of Duty Series needed to regain the identity it had lost in recent years. With a raw campaign told through the eyes of an extremely well-characterized cast, a multiplayer that finally takes us back to the battlefields of modern conflict and a co-op mode that can be faced with friends both online and locally, Modern Warfare brings back the brand to the Olympus of shooters.
