Call of Duty is undeniably a piece of propaganda fiction that glamorises and bolsters the image of war, as well as the perspective and ‘righteousness’ of western forces

Activision and Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reboot advances the franchise in truly interesting ways, but it's not without flaws.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare does a lot right from a gameplay standpoint—at least as far as campaign and multiplayer are concerned. But a confused story that simultaneously has too much and too little to say about war makes it a poor successor to the legacy of Call of Duty 4.

A successful launch, which puts Infinity Ward in the place it deserves and to which we grant recognition that the Infinite Warfare campaign - another of the best in the series - should also have been carried.

After punting on a campaign mode in BLOPS4, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare represents a welcome return to form for a franchise that appeared to be on a downward trend. The more deliberate pace for multiplayer, especially for Ground War mode, might feel clunky to folks who prefer more fast-paced action. This one, however, feels more like a complete game than its predecessor. It still might not be the best COD ever for a lot of folks. But it’s certainly the best COD in quite some time, especially if you’ve been disappointed by games such as Advanced Warfare and Infinite Warfare.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is the fresh start that the series desperately needed. This reboot of a modern classic has everything folks once loved about the CoD franchise, and lays an exciting foundation for the series moving forward.

Turns out a reboot is just what the doctor ordered. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is the best the series has been in quite some time.

After all the "divisions" and "breakpoints," Modern Warfare seems to come from a different planet. The multiplayer harks back to the days of Battlefield 2 & 3, and the single-player campaign shows war in a mature and realistic way. Finally, we have a game that makes no allowances for a lower age rating. Call of Duty is back at the top – hands down, the best shooter on the market right now.

Modern Warfare truly is an awesome attempt at revitalizing the Call of Duty franchise, especially just ahead of the next console generation. The game is a solid foundation for the future of the franchise, and if you've been burnt out on the franchise until now, it's worth it to hop back in for 2019. Just don't bother with Spec Ops and you'll have a great time with the rest of the game.

As a well-rounded gaming experience, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare takes steps in the right direction to give itself some serious realism. Offering more grounded gameplay than instalments such as the Black Ops or Advanced Warfare games, the gunplay and controls are tight and very balanced for both the experienced and casual player alike. The only thing that the game and Infinity Ward themselves seemed to truly struggle with was the narrative – where it works in some cases, often you're left feeling like you're stuck in a half-concocted American political propaganda piece.

For all the strengths of the story, multiplayer is where new and veteran players will sink hours and hours into. For both sets of players, Modern Warfare offers new content and hours of entertainment.

For Modern Warfare though, it feels a bit more grounded in reality, seemingly having drawn inspiration from films like Sicario, The Hurt Locker, American Sniper, and Zero Dark Thirty.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare tries to be a serious commentary on present-day conflicts, but is mostly just another Call of Duty game by nature of the series's longstanding blind spots.

Both the campaign and (currently divisive) multiplayer add a lot of new angles and depth to the usual Call of Duty experience. Unfortunately, that all comes at the cost of a good story, and the last Modern Warfare had a great story.

Infinity Ward brings back the iconic and the most anticipated single-player campaign and it looks as great as the old Morden Warfare series despite the mediocre ending. The multi-player part is as neat as usual but the spec ops is too difficult to continue.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a disappointing entry in the series, and despite big promises and a lot of potential, it doesn't do anything special to move the series forward.

When Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is operating at its peak, it's performing at a level the series or genre hasn't seen in over a decade. When Infinity Ward lets their many flaws show, it's painfully disheartening and only makes the potential for greatness feel that much richer. Perhaps this blinding contrast in their strengths and weaknesses will allow the team to come back and execute a sequel that will hit all of its marks without fail.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is one of the most refreshing and tactically immersive entries in the franchise to date, but the current state of some multiplayer components at launch and a deeply disappointing co-op mode drags down an otherwise fantastic FPS.
