At this stage, PlatinumGames have a reputation for making fast-paced, stylish action games, and while Astral Chain is a bit slower than their previous efforts, it still has that deep and engaging combat system that these developers are practically known for.
Home to an incredibly immersive world and the best combat on the Nintendo Switch, Astral Chain is a must-play not only for fans of the genre, but the medium as a whole. It is a title that understands the importance of balancing gameplay, story, and style without ever sacrificing substance for anything else. It's more accessible than most PlatinumGames titles without ever having to compromise its core mechanics. The slower start may alienate potential fans but sticking with Astral Chain leads to a surprisingly thematic script, incredibly deep combat, and what might be Platinum's best game to date.
If you ask if something is possible for you or your Legion to do in Astral Chain, most of the time, the answer is yes.
Aside from the lackluster co-op and slow start, Astral Chain is one of those rare games where it's difficult to say anything bad about it.
Minor technical issues and an underwhelming story aside, this is Platinum Games' most ambitious game to date, one that retains the developer satisfying combat system yet adds so much more.

Astral Chain constantly impresses with its enthralling premise, frenetic action, and abundance of content. Even in its quietest moments, it exudes heart and intrigue, and for those willing to dig deeper, The Ark and its mysteries are a joy to discover. Beautiful visuals and incredible presentation values round things out to make it one of the Switch's must-own titles.
Platinum delivers another winner with Astral Chain. Fans of fast-paced action games shouldn't hesitate to pick this one up.
Part RPG, part open-world quest-a-thon, but mostly an action game with a pretty neat tag-team mechanic that takes a while to master, Astral Chain is anything but a slog. In essence, Takahisa is clearly taking the diversity and open-ended nature of his past game and putting it all here in this Nintendo Switch title. Next to Splatoon, this is definitely one of Nintendo's best new IPs in a long, long while.
The excellent combat, coupled with the intriguing story, are capable of keeping your eyes glued to your Nintendo Switch screen for hours. Astral Chain fells like a true PlatinumGames experience through and through.

The latest hit from PlatinumGames is an ambitious action adventure game that largely succeeds in many ways, though it's juggling so many aspects that some fall through the cracks.
Astral Chain is one of PlatinumGames' finest acts this generation, cementing itself as yet another stellar exclusive for Nintendo Switch. It doesn't reach the heights of excellence achieved by Yoko Taro's NieR: Automata, but can more than hold its own thanks to an excellent setting, experimental combat and so, so much style it hurts.
Astral Chain balances smart yet exciting combat and rewarding mechanics with slower, more thoughtful investigation elements and fun exploration.
Astral Chain is one of the most exciting new IPs I've played in years. From its stunning combat design to its gorgeous visuals, it packs a punch in almost every area. Combat feels incredible and the Legions add a huge amount of options to how you tackle any given battle. Some may fault the game for its more quiet moments and investigations, but the contrast they offer to the frantic action, feels near-perfect in its execution.
PlatinumGames certainly did not disappoint. Almost all the course of the game I could not get bored, because activities lurked all the time. One of the few things that is a bit annoying on the game is the fact that the chapter can't be played 100% right away, because often there are activities requiring a Legion you don't already have. You must then go back in future chapters to complete these activities. The length of each chapter and the overall storyline also seemed great to me, and I had finished in about 18 hours. For a great combination of catchy story, amazing stylization and heaps of fun fighting, I'll give solid recommendation 9 out of 10.

This is absolutely a worthy successor to Nier Automata – and like that game, Astral Chain is definitely a contender for one of my favourite games of the year.
Astral Chain is both beautiful and mesmerising. You’re not likely to come across a better action gameplay system for quite some time – likely until PlatinumGames’ own next effort. Truly this is a developer that understands the principles of movement in action better than any, and while its games might struggle in other areas to meet the brilliance of the action, every second with that action is satisfying, exciting, and a very pure form of entertainment.
Astral Chain is one of Platinum Games' most complex and satisfying action games to date, with combat that's suitably fast but far more purposeful and careful in execution. Its gorgeous world and enticing premise are betrayed by an uninteresting story and characters, but there's little else to fault when you're teaming up with your legions and solving cases across different dimensions.
Astral Chain really is another classic from Platinum Games with top notch combat system, beautiful art and interesting story.
