Originally conceived as DLC for the game’s Switch port, the franchise’s catalog of celebrated musical compositions and Nintendo’s unusual interest in lending its crown jewel to an indie developer quickly turned Cadence of Hyrule into a standalone entry that somehow manages to combine the best of both worlds.

It's hard to believe that something as crazy sounding as rhythm-based rougelike would actually work, but Necrodancer proved it could be done well and Cadence of Hyrule took it a step further by improving multiple facets of gameplay and visuals.

Cadence of Hyrule is a fun time if you know what you’re getting into. This isn’t an average Zelda spin-off, so if you’re awful at keeping a beat and don't’ want to use the Fixed Beat Mode. But, Cadence of Hyrule is worth a try if you don’t mind going to the rhythm and dealing with a couple of rogue-like elements.

Cadence of Hyrule is a unique take on a beloved franchise that combines old school Legend of Zelda with an indie vibe. The base action can be a bit too simple and exploration could be more fleshed out. Its unique rhythm mechanics, however, combined with its Zelda inspired look and sound just might make skeptics sing a different tune once they try it out. It could very well be music to your ears.

Cadence of Hyrule is a strong and inspired crossover between The Legend of Zelda and Crypt of the NecroDancer. By mixing the beloved world of Hyrule with the rhythm-based strategy of Brace Yourself's game, the studio delivers a colorful but brief adventure, served by a pleasant and varied soundtrack all along.

Cadence of Hyrule might not be the challenging follow-up that Necrodancer fans were looking forward to, but it serves as a charming homage to the music of The Legend of Zelda series, and as a celebration of its classic 2D formula.
