It’s a very transparent system. I think too many games try to dazzle us with an overwhelmingly complicated system of upgrades. Not this one, and that’s a good thing. There’s a whole bunch of stuff going on in Remnant, and an overly complicated game loop for upgrades and leveling would detract from it. The game wants you to be a rooting-shooting (or is that just root shooting?), hacking-slashing badass and doesn’t want you too hung up on learning how to build this character optimally or how to min-max.

Despite its flawed boss design, Remnant: From the Ashes has enough to make a case for it being an action RPG in its own right with solid progression systems, good combat and its own take on the Souls formula.

By taking the best bits of a few different genres, Gunfire Games has come up with an exceptional formula here, and brought us the surprise hit of the year. Sure, it'll take you a while to "git gud", but it actually feels like it's worth the practice.

Remnant: From the Ashes offers a healthy dose of punishing enemies while soothing a player's wounds with an adequate amount of storyline and interesting places to explore and characters to meet.

Remnant : From the Ashes is doing well at mixing Dark Souls Like gameplay and TPS action games. It also has a great universe, but the procedural features of the levels are a bit annoying.

Remnant: From the Ashes it's an entertaining and challenging game, that also give us some options to try it's gameplay and challenge its enemies. However, you should not forget that it's mainly a coop game, and playing alone can be tough or even frustrating for the most part of the journey.

Remnant: From the Ashes is one of the better ARPGs released in recent years so if you enjoy Souls-like campaigns or third-person shooters in general then I'm sure you'll have an enjoyable time mowing down the monsters that lurk in its post-apocalyptic world.

Either way, when all is said and done – I kind of love this game.

Remnant: From the Ashes is a somewhat overlooked 2019 title currently free for all PS Plus members. Gunfire Games' brutally challenging Action RPG 3rd Person Shooter is as charming as it is challenging and is an absolute must have for gamers who enjoy punishing themselves during their downtime.

I purchased Remnant for $40 when it was new, and I really enjoyed it. It’s tough, a bit slow, and kinda ugly; but now that it is on Game Pass for both Console and PC it’s an easy recommendation for anyone looking to murder a bunch of creepy-looking monsters either alone or with their friends.

Remnant: From the Ashes is still an excellent game. Gunfire Game’s port to the Nintendo Switch has made an exceptionally great game accessible to a whole new group of gamers. Tight, responsive controls and consistently smooth gameplay performance make up for some downgraded visuals. This leaves you with a solid offering for the Nintendo Switch. If you’re in the market for a Souls-like with a unique story, a bit more forgiving gameplay and also like to game on the go then I can highly recommend picking up Remnant: From the Ashes on the Nintendo Store.

Even though the Switch version is the less attractive of the bunch, Remnant from the Ashes remains a solid effort from Gunfire Games and an original spin on the Souls formula. We're curious to see what the studio will come come up with the second chapter.

Feeling like it was designed to take some inspiration from the challenge of Dark Souls, and the format and look of Fallout, this feels pretty different

As far as Switch ports go, this one is not bad. Sure, compromises are apparent, namely in the visual department and some egregious loading times, but I had a good time with it. Or better yet, I had as much fun with this particular port as I could on my own. This is still a co-op game at heart, so we can only hope more people buy it in order to populate its lobbies. As of now, however, I can’t say this is a must-own.

Remnant: From the Ashes on Switch is a good port, and although the visuals and load times can be an issue, I still loved playing it again.

Overall, Remnant: From The Ashes is a perfect entry point for those who are wanting to take their first steps in dabbling in the soulslike genre. Gunfire Games took me by surprise with this one. I was skeptical going in and doubted the third-person shooter mechanics would blend so seamlessly with the genre. Remnant 2 is due to be released later this year, and frankly, I can’t wait.
