Ion Fury is the game Duke Nukem Forever should have been.

As a kid of the 90s, I cut my big boy gaming teeth on games like Ion Fury. Futuristic, fast-paced shooters that were filled with gore, or at least indistinct red blobs that were meant to be chunks of scorched meat. Ion Fury was one of many games out in my youth, and while I never got a chance to play the original, I was delightfully surprised to be able to take this reboot/remaster/re-release – I’m not sure what they are terming it – out for a spin.

Ion Fury is an honest game with yourself and your audience. What you see is what you will find, there is no trick, trap or cardboard. Classic is the word and the flavor it offers us. Based on that it is easy to weigh if it is what you are looking for or not, if it will satisfy you or not. And despite some small bug and the handicap involved in its control with pad, making it more advisable to play with keyboard and mouse if we have that possibility, it is still a very good option on any platform. If you like the genre of that time, if you have already replayed the references from which it drinks, here is a new title to enjoy.

Ion fury is the new creaton of Duke Nukem 3D, Prey, and Max Payne´s Team. With Voidpoint Ion Fury brings back the legendary Build Engine, famously known for classic first-person shooters like Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, and Blood. Ion Fury is the real deal!

Ion Fury blows the Build Engine's dust off, and manages to offer something that seems to hit all the right - nostalgic - notes, but it sort of misses the most crucial ones. Gunfights feel awesome, but the level design is anything but, leading to the many quitter moments being dull as hell. Plus, Voidpoint's creation lacks character, and plays its "comedic" card a bit too safe for something that's meant to be a return to the days of Duke Nukem's political incorrectness. As for the Switch port, while currently the only way to enjoy this on the go, this is definitely something that plays a lot better on the PC.

Despite it not being the best version, Ion Fury‘s greatness still shines on the Nintendo Switch. Hopefully some of its minor roughness gets ironed out to make it perfect. Good first person shooters on Switch are uncommon, and this one ranks high.

If you are a Duke Nukem fan (or any other classic shooter which does not bother with iron sights) Ion Fury is a must-try experience. It will take you back in time, make you feel young and happy again. But, if you prefer modern shooters like Call of Duty skip this game because most likely you will not appreciate its corks.

Ion Fury is a must play experience for anybody who wants a challenge and misses the aesthetic of a '90s first person shooter.

Ion Fury is a shooter that phenomenally emulates what made the early FPS so wonderful. A timeless gameplay loop that effortlessly coaxes fun out of a formula so old it stretches decades into gaming's past, the game is an incredible amount of fun. The technical problems we encountered muddy the waters, but even with those present (and a fix incoming for that game-breaking bug) we enjoyed our time with the game enough that we still recommend that anyone interested in playing it, do so.

Ion Fury is a total blast, as it doesn’t try to be anything other than a fun, challenging shooter. Giving a game like this a deep story or any other moment that isn’t comprised of killing enemies or solving puzzles would have been a detriment to its great gameplay loop and overall game design.

Ion Fury brings the old school shooting to the new generation. Although the controls are a little bit clumsy (specially with bosses), the game can be a frenetic and fun experience.

Ion Fury is nothing short of a giant love letter to the classic shooters of the 1990s. From the cheesy one-liners to the secret-filled stages, the game oozes style in spades. Though it doesn't improve much over its predecessors, Ion Fury really doesn't need to. Fans of classic shooters will definitely not want to miss this, while fans of modern shooters looking for a change will find an experience not too far outside of their comfort zone.

Ion Fury is a great reminder of how far First Person Shooters have come in twenty years, but it also shows that sometimes the old ways of doing things can still be very entertaining.

Ion Fury brings an action experience that aims to replicate its inspirations from over twenty years ago using today's technology, as if to bring a game that features a retro charm with contemporary elements. And it works, Ion Fury is very successful at striking a balance between the retro feel and today's amenities that make gameplay more enjoyable.

The Switch version of Ion Fury is worth a buy if that’s the only platform you own on which it’s available. The only advantage this edition has over others is that the Switch is portable. The lower framerate really works against this version of the game, and I feel like players will get more enjoyment by playing it on a platform with the horsepower to provide a steady 60fps.

Ion Fury isn’t a bad game. In the conventional sense, it’s a very functional shooter reminiscent of the heady days of all the aforementioned titles, with that modern (albeit minimal) sprucing. But it’s so laden down with questionable and somewhat controversy-baiting humour that lets it down a tad.

Ion Fury is a brilliant love letter to the shooters of the 90s thanks to its satisfying gunplay, old-school level design, and creatively brutal weaponry. It does have some imperfections here and there with the boss battles in particular standing out as one of its more underwhelming features, but overall there’s plenty here for nostalgia-loving shooting fans to enjoy as they blast through the game’s lengthy campaign.
