Seeing as it debuted in 1992, it's surprising that Puyo Puyo hasn't evolved much since its humble beginnings yet it's still great fun.

The original Puyo Puyo Arcade release arrive intact with plenty of Ages feature boosts, and plays as solidly now as it ever has, with online play, save states, and worldwide leaderboards aplenty. The base Head to Head mode remains as addictive as ever, but lacks compelling content outside of that structure, and those looking for more feature-rich Puyo Puyo goodness may wish to consider other entries in the series on the eShop.

Puyo Puyo 2 fans rejoice. The game you’ve been waiting 25 years for is finally (officially) here. Even though the full package is not 100% localized for the English language, it’s still easy to jump into and enjoy. The rewind feature is a welcome addition and will help newcomers get acclimated with the flow of the game. Just be sure to get tons of practice before going head-to-head in an online match. Trust us.

The Sega Ages version of Puyo Puyo does the best it can with the source material it has, but that offered fairly slim pickings in the first place. A few optional tweaks to the controls make it a little less frustrating to play, but the reality is that compared to other Sega Ages offerings this has probably had the least work put into it. Puyo Puyo devotees will want it because it's where the series all began, but everyone else should look into alternatives if they want to keep coming back for another one of those blob-dropping feats.
