Anthill may be several years old at this point, but it's still a fun little game that showcases Image & Form's talents before the Steamworld series gathered, er... steam. There's a decent amount of depth here as you explore various strategies to defend your anthill, and there's good replay value with the delightful Infinity mode. It falls down a bit on graphics, as it can look a bit overly simplistic at times, and we would have at least liked the option to play on the TV, perhaps with pointer controls.

Anthill is a unique take on the ‘defense’ genre, having you draw and assign trails to units instead of placing towers. From such a simple concept comes an addictive and challenging game, one which will entertain you for many hours as you try and work out the most efficient and cost-effective way to proceed. I personally felt like the later levels spiked in difficulty, without any warning, but after going back and earning more stars to upgrade my ant colony, I began to progress again. It’s a brilliANT ANTdictive game which you’ll find hard to put down.

Strategically, the game certainly feels like a unique addition to the tower defense genre. However, the game isn't strategically priced. Anthill lacks some of the basic components you'd expect from a game on the Nintendo Switch, such as the ability to play multiplayer and play in both docked and handheld mode. Fortunately, though, you can listen to the brand new, divine original soundtrack.

It's not exactly the top of its field, but Anthill is an engaging experience for short bursts. The simple nature of the game and the streamlined strategic elements make this a great pick-up-and-play title for strategy and tower defense fans, and there's a good deal of content to keep you busy for some time. You'll wish it supported docked play, and multiplayer modes would've been nice, but Anthill remains a title that's worth checking out.
