I wanted to love Final Fantasy VII Remake. I really did. These are characters and worlds that I grew up loving and genuinely caring about. But after finishing the main campaign and a majority of the side quests, I’m left wondering: why all the praise?

...although the complete Final Fantasy VII storyline is a fascinating, emotional globetrotting adventure, this first 40-hour romp is anything but.

Final Fantasy VII Remake manages to balance the introduction of new concepts with faithfully recreations of the original game's most memorable aspects, but it also unnecessarily pads out this first installment in a larger story with too much downtime between its most striking moments.

Despite being decorated for single-handedly breaking the Japanese role playing game genre in the West, Final Fantasy 7 was also maligned for many years as the videogame most returned to vendors by disgruntled customers.

Even those who have no idea of Final Fantasy VII, they will find an extravagant remake and a story that are complete on their own although it is no secret that there will be a continuation to the title.

The Final Fantasy 7 Remake does both the best and worst things to enhance the original. The battle system is a great step forward despite a cumbersome camera and the world building is second to none. Characters are faithful to their original counterparts, boasting some wonderful voice acting from all involved and some of the locations are a joy to revisit all these years later. While the nostalgic slices of the original game are easily the highlight of the entire 30/35 hour experience, Remake is let down by inconsistent pacing, narrative and design choices, ones that have serious ramifications for the second part to come.

Mediocre world design, poor pacing, and plotting that fails to fully capture what made the original so special, it's hard not to walk away feeling like this isn't a disappointment across the board.

It is a shame that so much time had to be wasted in Midgar, and that Final Fantasy VII Remake couldn’t be just a remake. There was room to improve upon for the original, but that is not what Tetsuya Nomura wanted to do. He was more interested in leaving his stain on what is Square Enix’s most important game ever they made.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake sets out to fully re-imagine a classic RPG with improved combat and an expanded story. Unfortunately, it's hurt by weak side quests and a surplus of padding, and its biggest change is bound to be controversial. It's one of the most coherent and enjoyable Final Fantasy releases in years, but it's also likely to be one of the most divisive.

Final Fantasy VII Remake boasts an incredibly fun combat system under a fantastic soundtrack and beautiful visuals. Unfortunately, the writing does not do its narrative any favors, and the game released with a fair share of issues.

When FF7: Remake is firing on all cylinders it’s an amazing experience. I have my complaints, but I really did enjoy my time almost they entire way through the game. The story is deep and immersive, the battle system mechanically sound, and the sound and aesthetics are truly remarkable. However, I can’t help but feel like I spent 40 hours to get somewhere should’ve been in maybe 20. Square Enix took 5 hours of game play and stretched it out to a full game. The experience needs to be condensed. The justification was to give us more of the world of FF7, but all the extras kept me from experiencing that world. Midgar was only about 15% of the original game and it was not even the best part. I feel like they did too much focus on Midgar and would rather have the first game get us much further into the FF7 experience. I am still excited to see what comes next, but I am cautiously optimistic in how they will handle the next installment.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is beautiful, entertaining, and enjoyable to play, and at times, it improves upon the original game. However, the game moves in a direction which is worrisome, messy, and disappointing. I believe that still the best way to experience Final Fantasy VII is to play the masterpiece that came out in 1997

Final Fantasy VII REMAKE is a spectacular game that soars and falls in equal measure. There is a lot to love here, but frustrations and disappointments mar the experience. A solid central story is undermined by needless padding. Exceptional combat loses its edge at times due to unfortunate design choices, and gorgeous visuals are muddied with some appalling technical shortcomings.

I don't know if I enjoyed Final Fantasy VII Remake as much as I was fascinated by it. The game is bound to divide fans and newcomers, but it's the kind of experience that's going to be dissected for decades to come - much like the original.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is not flawless. In fact, it’s a game that proactively attempts to guide you past its flaws every step of the way, but it is still a game I’m glad I played. It’s likely to bring the ire of hardcore fans: as someone who only has a passing knowledge of original I know for a fact where this story has massively altered. However, if you play FF7R, you will fall in love. Not with the game, and not necessarily its museum-exhibit world, but with its cast. In that sense, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is pretty darn great.

There are some terrific improvements, and the soundtrack is still just as excellent as it was when I first played this game in 1997, but the story itself hasn’t aged well and these new liberties are paltry and weak. I’m hoping to be wowed in Remake part two.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth blends nostalgia with innovation, appealing to both longtime fans and newcomers. The game impresses with its enhanced visuals and storytelling, setting a high bar for the adventure ahead, and it impresses with its satisfying combat mechanics, abundance of mini-games, and memorable soundtrack. While it navigates through some questionable story changes and occasional clunky exploration, Rebirth offers a rich and immersive experience. It skillfully tells a great story, making it a compelling play as it gears up for the trilogy's conclusion.
