Being only mildly familiar with the Vampire series, but having generally heard good things, I perked up when I heard about this...

A decent story based on a strong background, which lingers too long explaining and then rushing too fast to a satisfactory end. There are some minor technical issues but nothing too serious. It's relatively short story offers enough choices and side stories to allow several replays.

So, would I recommend this game? Well, those who are fans of text-based adventure games may find VMNY to be one filled with interesting characters, a mysterious and well-written narrative, and beautiful visual and sound design. However, those new to the genre, or simply looking to try out the game, may quickly become disillusioned by the never-ending dialogue, which provides little pay-off despite the implementation of choice-based mechanics. As a result, your experience with VMNY will entirely depend on whether you are able to appreciate the game beyond these text-based interactions. If not, rather than stucking the life out of the citizens of New York, you might just find the game sucking the life out of you.

For the uninitiated, Vampire: The Masquerade—Coteries of New York is a great introduction to the Vampire: The Masquerade franchise.

Coteries of New York is a big surprise. Passed as a "side" title compared to the much more talked about Bloodlines 2, the impression it gave was that of a product designed to simply "taste" a tasty but still not ready for the table and with only a fair variation in the recipe. Instead, we are faced with a main course, a game with a precise identity and dignity. It is not a title for everyone. Those who do not like visual novels will hardly feel at ease, and those who expect an appetizer of an action-rpg will be disappointed. But for fans of the series or simply lovers of modern gothic, this is an interactive story not to be missed, which honours an important license thanks to a technical realization with attention to every detail.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Coteries of New York is a good visual novel that can serve as a good aperitif while we wait for Bloodlines 2. Some great secondary characters and high level of writing defines a game marked by a somewhat decaffeinated main story.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Coteries of New York is a fantastic story about a young vampire trying to figure out how to live in the dark world of the constant masquerade. A great game full of captivating side stories , the main problem of which is its length.

There’s a bit of polish it can use here and there, but it’s certainly one of the better visual novels I’ve played this year.

Vampire: the Masquerade - Coteries of New York holds a lot of depth in its world and melds in some small mechanics to help add an element of strategy. Better suited to players who are already familiar to the world, but easy enough for fledgling vampires to embrace it.

Playing this game feels every bit like playing the tabletop pen-and-paper experience with a good GM weaving the story. Sadly, by nature pen-and-paper RPGs are about fun stories rather than anything meaningful, and Coteries of New York doesn't really have anything meaningful to say. Throw in some confused mechanics and this one won't be remembered as a classic of the genre.

As an exploration of modern vampire life, it’s a gripping story, but it’s missing some things that would be needed to make it a better-playing game.

Coteries of New York is an interesting addition to Vampire: The Masquerade world. But with a short story and almost zero replayability value, it lacks the depth a story-driven game deserves.

Overall, this indie RPG is a pretty good distraction for vampire fanatics to delve into as they anxiously await the upcoming releases this year.

If you absolutely can't wait until Bloodlines 2 for your next Vampire: The Masquerade fix, Coteries of New York is a decent enough way to fill the time.

While the writing is surprisingly high-quality and the UI is slick, the lack of any real choice and abrupt ending make Coteries Of New York tough to recommend.

Forget the fact that Vampire: The Masquerade - Coteries of New York is a visual novel, as it really knows what the setting is all about. From the world, to the characters, to the absolutely fantastic setting and handling of the franchises deep lore, this is really a Vampire: The Masquerade game done right, and one that's highly replayable. There are a few flaws here and there, like how forgettable the plot at hand is, or how the paths don't diverge as much as one would want them to, but this is such an engrossing, and deeply atmospheric experience that it doesn't really matter.

Coteries of New York is definitely a game made to be experienced in the context of a connected universe. As an introduction to that universe, it works. As a game on its own, it's just okay. Fans of the franchise will likely love it, and those who are interested in trying the franchise will find plenty to enjoy. But it's hard to recommend this as a game for everyone to jump on.
