While Depixtion still has nothing that drastically makes it better or worse than any other picross game out there, it definitely is one of the more polished ones, and in my opinion, it’s the best picross on Switch that wasn’t made by Jupiter. There isn’t really any bonus modes or anything to really note, just 96 well-made puzzles that work great with the presentation. For the typical $8, that’s all you really need if you want to stick to a good formula.

EXCELLENT - I never expected a developer I had never heard of (DevHour Games) to outdo Jupiter (the developers of the original Picross), but Depixtion does just that. Each image features three layers (each a different primary color) of Picross puzzles to solve, making the final picture even more satisfying upon completion. Add in a superb soundtrack and you have yourself a winner. Puzzle fans should eat this one up.

Do you ever pick up a game with the intent to play just a level or two, then look at your watch and realise you’ve been playing for hours? That’s what Depixtion did to me, and I’m not even mad about it. I absolutely love this game, and can’t recommend it highly enough for any fellow puzzle fans!

Although mechanically working like your usual Picross puzzle game, Depixtion uniquely combines various puzzles to make a colourful solution, unlike anything I’ve seen in this puzzle before. Whether you’re new to the world of Picross/Nonograms, or you’re a pro, there are puzzles ranging from the simple 5×5 to the insane 24×24 which are sure to challenge anyone who attempts them. Unfortunately, if you’re playing in portable mode, the 24×24 grids are rather small and the numbers are hard to see, and there is no touchscreen or stylus support (most likely for this same reason) – but I imagine those playing on TV won’t care about these points.

While for many years the Picross series has sat safely at the top of its own puzzle kingdom, seeing threats from other comers but never really breaking a sweat to match or surpass them, the times they are a-changin...

Few Picross-style games manage to feel as fresh and exciting as Depixtion and it's great to see such a clever spin on the classic genre.

The presentation is relatively barebones, which is fine as it is a good conduit to drive you to all of the 96 puzzles (each containing three puzzles, so technically the count is 288). Depixtion is not the best Picross or nonogram game I've ever played, but after checking out some dreadful examples on the Switch recently, I'm thankful when I can romp my way through a new one that is satisfying and fun. Depixtion does both in spades.

Depixtion is the nice middle ground between the simple Picross games and the more complicated ones that try to throw different genres into the mix. Veteran Picross players should be able to quickly pick up the concept of using different shades of color and different color layers, and it won't be too daunting for newcomers either. The puzzle selection in Depixtion can seem low compared to its contemporaries, but it will take some time to get through them all due to their layout. Overall, Depixtion is a solid puzzle game that fans will appreciate having in their libraries.
