Overall, this DLC is another piece of bland content on top of an already mediocre game. From broken quest triggers to a dumbed-down plot and repetitive missions, Black Panther: War for Wakanda just doesn’t manage to deliver anything remotely interesting.

With Great Power has its moments and Spider-Man is a great addition to the Marvel’s Avengers cast, but story presentation and console exclusivity also hold it back. With Great Power has its moments and Spider-Man is a great addition to the Marvel’s Avengers cast, but story presentation and console exclusivity also hold it back.

Black Panther - War for Wakanda is easily the strongest additional content for the game yet.

War for Wakanda is an exotic expansion that serves up more than just a bonus character to play as. The painstaking detail and passion that has gone into building this corner of the Avengers universe is clear to see, the game being in a much better state since launch. However, for those who simply couldn't gel with the game's multiplayer mission structure or emphasis on loot, this is one battle the Black Panther is unlikely to win.

All in all, I was surprised that I had as much fun with Marvel’s Avengers as I did. I still dislike the loot system and the microtransactions keeping me away from the best costumes but there is a good Marvel game beneath these elements.

War for Wakanda also suffers from a lack of meaningful post-game content as well, sticking to the same routine and vapid grind that was there before. It's not hard to imagine players departing after they finish the story and just waiting for a future character like Spider-Man to be added to Marvel's Avengers before coming back. Although there's some improvements made to the UI and a few other quality of life improvements, Marvel's Avengers - War for Wakanda is ultimately worth playing through for the brief story and Black Panther himself, but not much else. It succeeds at what it has always succeeded at and falls victim to the fundamental issues that have been there since launch, something that may leave a bitter taste in the mouths of lapsed players.

Marvel's Avengers: War for Wakanda adds an interesting playable character, but the game's structure is as repetitive and unfocused as ever.

War for Wakanda is a rich dish that adds several elements that will make Marvel's Avengers fans happy, while not offering anything new that could bring new players closer.

War for Wakanda is a breath of fresh air, bringing Black Panther into the spotlight with an improved story DLC that still struggles to escape repetition.

There’s a lot of depth packed into its relatively short gameplay time which can be completed in a few hours. But fans will enjoy their time spent in Wakanda which is highly engaging and sets a promising precedent for what could come in the future from Crystal Dynamic.

Marvel's Avengers: War for Wakanda introduces fantastically designed new areas with a dash of puzzles and platforming to mix things up. While the combat still has a long way to go before it remains interesting, this expansion is worth checking out for Black Panther's skills.

War For Wakanda is the best Marvel´s Avengers DLC for now. It adds a new hero (Black Panther) two new villains and some enemy types, but above all of it, we enjoyed visiting Wakanda, its jungles and royal palace finally feel "new" to the game. Sadly it´s short and we found some technical issues.

On a PS5 the game looks great, plays well, and loads up quickly. However, none of that can overcome the uninspired level design and lack of enemy variety. So despite the technical improvements, the game has not become more fun to play. The two DLCs add characters whose power sets are too similar. The main saving grace here is that the campaign stories are interesting enough to warrant a playthrough in solo mode. Unless there is some major gameplay tweaking Marvel Avengers doesn’t look like it will assemble to become an ongoing gaming service. To sum it up, I came for the gameplay but only stayed because of the story.

In almost every respect, Marvel's Avengers is a confused title with a grinding structure that takes an Infinity War to reach its true Endgame.

Sure, the game itself is still a little rough around the edges but it is a fantastic adventure that we think every Marvel fan will enjoy. It fills an Avengers-sized hole in the gaming market which could easily keep growing exponentially into the future. From A-Day to a Future Imperfect, to Wakanda and beyond… Marvel’s Avengers offers up endless hours of action-packed fun that deserves your time.

For a free upgrade, the next-gen patch is a real blessing here and it is certainly a great step for the game to take in its attempts to gain a second chance at becoming a new regular in your play cycles. Your engagement with the endgame aspects of Avengers is going to be solely down to your preferences and your tolerance for an intense, grinding style of game as seen with the emergence of the “live service” game, with even my short dip into the online field matching me up with players who out-ranked my power level a substantial amount. However, I have no desire to search for loot, to make my characters as powerful as possible, or even grind for some cosmetic skins, as ultimately the core hook just isn’t enough to keep me coming back. What is here is mechanically solid, but it never manages to be gratifying enough to keep me invested past an hour or so—and with the grind the game requires, that is just not enough time to get engrossed with the elements at play here.

Now that Marvel's Avengers is dirt cheap, it might be worth a play for the impressive action sequences and impressive visuals. Maybe with enough people picking it up at a much more agreeable price, it might inject the tedious co-op modes. It certainly did not deserve the utter disdain it received, and was at best just a corporate, tone-deaf project that nobody wanted. It is rotten with executive sleaze for sure, and the game can feel like work a lot of the time due to the grind, but there is an ok experience in this somewhere. It is buried beneath all the obnoxious writing, grinding, and generic design.

There will be case studies written about this release in the years to come, because it should have been a sure-fire slam dunk, and yet it feels like a missed opportunity. Make no mistake, the title has got better – and with the announcement of Black Panther, developer Crystal Dynamics remains committed to iterating on it for the foreseeable future – but as we alluded to in our Marvel’s Avengers PS4 review, there’s a disconnect between the promise of this product and what it actually offers right now.

Though Marvels Avengers makes a superhero-sized splash on PlayStation 5, this is still at its core the same game we had back in September 2020. That said, the improved visuals and passage of time both mean that Marvel's Avengers on PS5 is essentially now the definitive version of the game, boasting much more responsive gameplay and a wealth of bug fixes and quality of life improvements. Though no amount of extra pixels or DualSense features can transform the game, the fact that Marvel's Avengers is actually enjoying a fairly steady stream of worthwhile content should be reassuring to those who have been sat on the fence for the superpowered caper. In short, if you've been sitting Marvel's Avengers out, now is the time to jump in.
