Even as someone with no history on the streets (of rage) it’s clear that this is a labour of love, so I suspect franchise fans will find enough here to make it worth the purchase. The series is showing its age though, and while the aesthetic has been updated to suit the times, Streets of Rage 4 feels a little too rooted in its ‘90s heyday.

Streets of Rage 4 is a solid tribute to the genre it arguably helped shape, but this feels like more of the same with a fresh coat of paint rather than an all-out reinvention. What’s on offer here is reminiscent and nostalgic, and still a great time, but it ultimately lacks the oomph to elevate it beyond the games that came before it.

Streets of Rage 4 is both a sequel and a throwback to the original 2D brawler series. The gameplay has been tweaked and the presentation updated for the modern day, but it's still an unabashedly retro experience that will appeal to a select few.

A great and enjoyable game, it took me back to the 90s and it got me excited to replay the game with different characters. However, I don't think i can accept a similar approach to development if done again in the future, the game had minor improvements in gameplay and characters mechanics, the game needs major developments and huge jumps in mechanics as it did before in other Beat 'em up games in the 90s, specifically, the second game of the franchise.

As this sort of game always did, it remains a fairly pointless one-player experience that comes alive when playing with a friend or two. For nostalgic fans of the genre, it will serve up a treat, albeit one that doesn't last all that long.

Streets of Rage 4 is a great continuation of the classic series, though it doesn't do anything revolutionary.

Streets of Rage 4 makes a valiant attempt to drag the old-school franchise into the modern age. We've ended up with a beautiful beat-'em-up that's perhaps a little too loyal to the original games, but is ultimately a blast to play, especially with others. The appeal might wear off after a little while due to repetitive gameplay, but it's a huge amount of fun while it lasts.

Streets of Rage 4 delivers a fun, traditional experience but prioritises nostalgia over any kind of modern reinvention.

Thankfully, you won't have to buy Streets of Rage 4 for its retail price of $24.99 to enjoy it on PC or Xbox - the game is available on Xbox Game Pass, and for most gamers, that will be enough. Streets of Rage 4 wasn't perfect, but it was certainly better than I expected it to be and set a stage for future beat-em-ups that I hope more developers take cues from. Most surprisingly, Streets of Rage 4 made me want to boot up my NES and SNES, pop in the brutal fight fests of my childhood, and teach my 5-year-old just how hard games used to be.

Proving that the series' music has aged better than any bottled grape juice, whilst re-affirming that there's still room for a solid beat-em up in today's crowded market.

Streets of Rage doesn't do much to innovate, but it's a beautiful brawler with just enough depth to stay engaging through multiple runs.

9 Monkeys of Shaolin is the type of game you pick up and play over the course of a weekend or after a long day at work. The martial arts movie style works well and wears its grindhouse love on its sleeve. Combat is entertaining and challenging, and like a proper beat 'em up, you can have a friend join you for the ride. It's over after about five hours, but in that time you're treated to a really good time.

Streets Of Rage 4 brings back the retro franchise in such a masterful way that it can convert modern gamers into hardcore fans of old-school beat 'em ups. With that said, it's still a bit too dated in some regards although it remains a heck of a lot of fun.

It probaly lacks a bit of courage, but Streets of Rage 4 works on every level, expecially if you plan to play it with friends. Let's really hope that this is a new birth for this beloved franchise.

This might be a bigger issue if Streets of Rage 4 was a more expensive game, but at just $24.99, it is well priced for the content it delivers, though we could've used just a little bit more. What is there is extremely polished, addictive, and, above all else, incredibly fun. Streets of Rage 4 captures the nostalgic vibes of its glory days with a beautiful coat of paint and just enough modern flourishes to hook a brand-new audience, who we think will fall in love with a classic series if they give it a chance.

It’s a definitive revival of the popular Streets of Rage game as a form of a new sequel. The idea of always being either ganged up or going against an overpowered AI opponent is a blessing and a curse as you try to find the best character that’s suitable for every situation. As you raise the bar on difficulty, it feels as if the number of enemies doubles up, where your normal strategies may become useless once you try to play through the game by yourself. It remains questionable if the game is designed to be fair to the newcomers but it’s an acceptable challenge for the long running fans of the series.

For $24.99 Streets of Rage 4 is a good game, but it can really benefit from better balance between the characters and some of the levels. There is a good amount of replay value thanks to the unlockable characters, additional difficulties, a boss rush mode and online play. You can fight with each other in the story or Arcade mode or fight against each other in battle mode. In any case, if you are a fan of 2D beat ’em ups, this is one worth checking out.

Streets of Rage 4 is a time machine for the virtual world. Everything it does, it makes sure to infuse the era that saw this franchise truly raise to dominance. The animations are all so fluent, while the hand drawn visuals are really well done. The music fits perfectly with the aesthetic and that heavy bass does a lot to emphasis each punch. This is a game that’s perfect for small hour sessions.
