For series veterans and first-timers, Mafia: Definitive Edition is a labor of love for more than just the original game, but for the Mafia community whose support made this game possible. Series veterans will also take note of the changes in the story. The changes aren’t groundbreaking by any stretch of the imagination, just the framing of some story elements have been changed to make the story more in line with the current series of games. This is yet another amazing remake that fully embraces many of the things that made the original so special to so many people.

The Mafia remake makes the original 2002 title obsolete by improving and upgrading everything, which is the whole point. Archaic gameplay, tropes, and controls are refurbished to make the new game and its cast all the better while preserving the core of Tommy’s rise and subsequent fall in the game’s thrilling narrative.

Mafia: Definitive Edition is a two-sided coin. On one side we find stunning graphics and a great plot that still manages to captivate us after 18 years, while on the other side we find some meaningful shortcomings that could have been avoided re-designing some aspects of the original game. Despite this, it's still a suggested buy both for people who loved the original game and for the ones that never played it.

Mafia: Definitive Edition may be too short with today’s open world games standards to justify that price tag but it’s a full-on remake of one of the best gangster stories ever told in all forms of media. It has enough surprises for old fans and it’s modern enough for the newer generation of gamers to take a leap of faith and buy it.

Mafia Definitive Edition maintaines the spirit of the original game with its captivating story and profound characters. With new and additional dialogues and cinematic cutscenes as well as with the right degree of modernizing graphic and gameplay, the remake even delivers a deeper experience than the action classic from 2002.

It would be great without some "engineering" problems. But i still can't say "this remake is bad". Don Salieri sends his regards.

If Mafia: Definitive Edition‘s gameplay hasn’t moved far beyond 2002, it’s still a gorgeous, reverent glow-up which should satisfy fans both old and new.

Mafia: Definitive Edition is genuinely one of the best remakes of this generation. It gets so much right in terms of staying true to the source material and preserving what makes it so awesome. Sadly, that only ends up hurting it due to a dated mission structure and poor AI. Still, it was fantastic to be able to play such an updated version of the classic.

Mafia: Definitive Edition offers a thrilling action-packed gangster tale that is only really let down by some occasionally clunky controls. The remake itself is top notch, with the story delivering the same gritty tale but adding additional sequences to flesh it out, the mission design more tightly refined to offer more excitement and a balanced difficulty, and the visuals outstanding throughout with Lost Heaven feeling more believable and lived in than ever before. Hangar 13 have done a really great job in re-imagining the game whilst maintaining its roots and it’s sure to please both series veterans and complete newcomers. It’s just a shame that the controls are so fiddly, with both the on-foot segments and the driving feeling pretty cumbersome throughout. It’s not a game-breaker by any means, but it’s certainly noticeable – especially during your early hours playing when you’re getting used to how the game feels. Still, these issues won’t ruin your time with Mafia: Definitive Edition and there’s no denying that it’s up there with Final Fantasy VII Remake and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 as one of the finest remakes that has released over the last few years. If you’re a fan of modern open-world adventures or appreciate a good gangster flick, you won’t want to miss out on Mafia: Definitive Edition.

It is not often that we have experiences of this level in games oriented to a single player, as far as the story and technical power are concerned. Mafia presents a story with such exceptional and rarely seen quality that it is well worth play. If you're a fan of criminal thrillers and gangster movies, as well as coverage and driving shooters, Mafia: Definitive Edition is for you.

I spent about 20 hours with Mafia and it left me wanting more. So much in fact, that I started to download Mafia 3 while I was writing this. Just when I thought I was out, they keep pulling me back in.

Hangar 13 has indisputably made Mafia Definitive Edition exactly the remake it had to be in order to entertain and at the same time not to disrespectfully alienate the clearly outdated original. The narrative approach is based on the right set screws, in order to bring the action adventure into the modern age. Thanks to the expanded character profiles, the successful voice recordings and the impressive visuals, the narrative gains additional emotionality and presents you with a rousing story-focused mafia adventure that is unlike any other. At the same time, the new edition has to struggle with the complex, limited game elements. Hakeliges Gunplay, the strongly linear level structures as well as the partly not flawless technical implementation show that Hangar 13 did not yet want to take the leap into modern times. Even though Mafia Definitive Edition never met the multi-layered shooter standard, the game with its consistent simplicity feels coherent enough to entertain during the almost 10-hour campaign. In combination with the difficult setting options, the remake is the perfect snack for the nostalgia-bright players and those who want to become one in the future.
