Like Hooper said, sharks just swim and eat, and that's unfortunately not enough to fill even a short action-RPG like Maneater.

ManEater, although with some bugs and shallow, is an enjoyable adventure with a very original concept. Great level design and art invite you to explore the world of Port Clovis. And if you are a lover of series B movies of sharks you can not stop trying it.

Maneater is a game that could have been good but was too obsessed with forcing players to interact with its low points to make its high points shine.

Yet even with these massive issues, I would be telling a lie if I did not find the whole thing addictive. Perhaps that is the most frustrating part, what is here is great in concept, and there is so much room for improvement that it raises frustration that there was not more time taken to expand upon the mission format and game mechanics to make the game something truly unique. In fact, I was so checked out with the repetitive nature of it all that nine hours later the Platinum Trophy popped, so that must count for something. With it being free on the PS5 as of writing with PlayStation Plus, then there are zero reasons not to check it out and see if it scratches an itch you might have. Past that, hold your breath for a potential sequel that could make Maneater a real stand-out title and an easy one to recommend in the future.

Maneater was released just over a year ago on all other major platforms and now Nintendo Switch owners are getting a slice of the action; courtesy of indie developers Tripwire Interactive. It’s a game I’d not read too much about nor had I watched gameplay of so I had a completely spoiler free play through. There’s certainly not many other shark RPG’s (“shARkPG”) out there that do it quite like Maneater does and this is one of the major selling points for the game!

With a lot of content, Maneater is a fun and exciting game, mainly because it has creative concepts and unique moments, like the acrobatic jumps that we perform to assassinate humans on dry land and the memorable battles against motorized boats. Despite some flaws, the title is a good choice to spend hours exploring immersive aquatic environments, allowing us to live the other side of the shark stories shown in scary films and television shows.

Simple, straightforward mayhem makes for a fun time that does not last as long as Maneater wants it to be.

I truly enjoyed Maneater despite it’s limitations and performance issues. In my head I would have preferred a more realistic simulation, but in practice that would have probably been boring after an hour or so. It is definitely one of the most unique games of 2020 so far and an experience I will remember fondly.

Maneater isn't a game for everybody. Fans of Jaws and similar movies will enjoy an interesting and original adventure set in the ocean world and brutal, bloody fights with other predators and shark hunters. The game suffers from stereotypical quests and worse technical side.

With its unique premise and a great sense of humor, Maneater’s 12-hour campaign is a fun feeding frenzy while it lasts. However, the game’s occasionally repetitive quests, coupled with its spotty performance, make it feel more like a quick and dirty trip to Long John Silver’s than a bountiful seafood feast for starving RPG fans. Still, if these issues aren’t enough to keep you from wanting to take the plunge, then you might just enjoy sinking your teeth into Maneater.

Maneater is a pretty fun experience, especially if you’re a fan of shark movies like I am, even though it does have its problems. It felt like being placed in Jaws and being told to just go at it and I loved that. I even ended up getting the platinum trophy since I spent so much time exploring the ocean and digging into the collectibles I could find. However, it has its downsides, too.

In small doses, Maneater is pretty mindless fun. Exploring is entertaining, there’s enough shiny objects scattered about to keep things interesting and the progression options are nice to see as well. However, the progression path could provide a bit more meaning if the combat and movement were somewhat more refined. Considering the bulk of the time is spent moving and fighting, that is a somewhat severe drawback from what would otherwise had the potential to be a pretty fantastic guilty pleasure.

With an uncommon goal to rip and tear your way through members of the aquatic universe, and ultimately survive the oncoming dangers of daring hunters, Maneater’s delightful display of devious delectable’s will leave an insatiable blood lust, and massive appetite for more.

Considering the largely uncharted waters (sorry) of the shark simulator genre, it is hard to fault Maneater for its flaws. On the other hand, open world design has been a staple of gaming for over a decade and it is a shame to see such repetitive quest design.

Maneater is a game that, for the most part, lives up to its potential, offering something a bit different than other games. While it could be regarded as something of a one-trick pony, it’s still a very good trick that you’ll enjoy while it lasts.

Maneater is a game of many of many shortcomings; terrible loading screens, frightening cinematics cuts and a myriad of technical difficulties. However, the game is also extremely fun if you can overlook some of its problems.

While Maneater has its problems, it can also be fun once you get used to the combat. However, those on the fence should wait for a patch or two before investing.
