Monster Train Reviews
"Successfully blending genres is a tough task, but Monster Train makes it look easy. Addictive rouge-like card-based gameplay with a presentation that is second-to-none
Fans of CCGs and rogue-likes will have an absolute ball with Monster Train. It’s hard, unique and really addictive. Here’s hoping it gets some post-launch support with more cards, factions and enemies.
Monster Train is a well made cardbuilding title with plenty of novel and well executed ideas. There can be only one king of the genre, but if the developers keep working on Monster Train, the gap to the throne could shorten considerably.

Monster Train feels like an evolution of the deck-building genre. Taking it to new heights, even if the game takes place in the pits of hell. Slay the Spire may have set the bar, but Monster Train choo chewed right through it.
A More Tactical Take on the Deck Building Roguelike That Shines Thanks to Excellent Diversity in How You Tackle the Goal of Re-igniting the Flames of Hell.
Overall, Monster Train is a great experience and is extremely well-polished and balanced.
Despite being a solid title within the genre, Monster Train: First Class has some rough edges that don't let its potential come out.

Monster Train is a good roguelite deckbuilder, but it doesn’t achieve top-tier status. With its rather monotonous appearance and gameplay, it doesn’t keep you coming back for more like the other great rogues. That being said, given its more forgiving nature, this could be a great starter for those that are new to the genre.

Overall, Monster Train is outstanding. The few issues I have with it are minor at best, and what the game delivers shines through with ease. This is not only the best Roguelike I’ve played all year, but quite possibly the best game. Period. It’s taken four long years for the genre to move beyond Spire, and Monster Train manages to stand beside that titan and carve its own path to greatness. This is highly recommended for any Switch owner.
Monster Train has an addictive gameplay loop and tons of replayability, but needs a little bit of balancing
For those who are into card games, Monster Train is a must-play title. It's better and more complex than Slay the Spire, although I would have liked to see more bosses throughout my several playthroughs, the RNG dictates who you fight and when. Monster Train is a fresh, new take on the deck-building card game genre that will be hard to be outmatched.
Monster Train does indeed deserve to be noticed; it's the epitome of something that is better than it looks. Underneath that blandly homogenised aesthetic and equally bland promise of yet more roguelike lies a game that offers players some deep, invigorating, challenging and rewarding turn-based strategy. You may well find this one very difficult to put down.
If you have even a hint of love for card games of any kind, I cannot recommend Monster Train enough.
Monster Train is a hybrid deck-building strategy game with some rogue-like and tower-defense style features. With plenty of cards and several clans to unlock, and a bevy of difficulty tiers to master, Monster Train is the deck-building game to beat this year, hands down.
It would be easy to dismiss a game like Monster Train as nothing more than yet another entry into the ever-increasing deck-building genre upon first glance, but after just a short while playing it, its various complexities begin to reveal themselves, making for deep gameplay that keeps you coming back for just one more run.
I've found it hard to recommend deck builders recently because I've either thought they were clones of other games, not all that exciting or they have too much going on, however, in Monster Train they have managed to balance replayability and creativity.
If you are willing to turn down the tone-setting battle music, this is an excellent game to unwind with while listening to a podcast—so long as you find this kind of challenge cathartic rather than frustrating.
Monster Train is a highly addicting deck-building game, with multiple clan(deck) types, and higher-level difficulties that'll have you playing for quite some time. The inclusion of online multiplayer mode provides further value, as you compete to see who can defeat heaven the fastest. If greater difficulties don't entice you, there are daily global challenges and custom challenges that let you design your own challenge and share it with friends. Not to mention, there are over 200 cards to unlock, and unique tactics to deploy based on your chosen clan combinations.
