No Straight Roads is a videogame first and foremost; and by videogame standards, this was a poor effort for such wasted potential.

With genre music battles and stylish design, this should be great – but it can't decide whether it's a third-person fighter or a rhythm-action game

No Straight Roads needs to retire from touring, rest its vocal cords, and make a comeback tour when it's found itself as an artist. Right now, it can't carry a tune.

I had high hopes for No Straight Roads. Its rock v EDM plot with a city powered by music is certainly right up my alley but it never capitalises on its potential. This is one of 2020’s biggest letdowns and a game that will forever be remembered for what could have been.

Metronomik's first tour reveals the heart of an ambitious, stylish band that's consistently playing out of tune.

No Straight Roads proves there are no straight roads in the rhythm genre. In its bid to achieve originality the game both over-complicates and over-simplifies itself. The end-result is a composition of beautiful melodies that turn into a cacophonic mess when brought together.

There’s a lot to like about No Straight Roads, there really is. But ultimately, its gameplay is disappointing.

A classic case of style over substance, No Straight Roads aspires to be so much more than it turned out to be. It's got all the charm of a cult classic without the gameplay to back it up.

No Straight Roads has an interesting premise and a fun story to tell, but unremarkable combat and open world exploration result in an overall mediocre experience.

No Straight Roads is one of those games that struggles to strike a balance between style and substance. While it does dazzle on the occasion with its thumping soundtrack, it is also rife with cringe-worthy voice acting. Similarly, while its story concept is really interesting, its quality is marred with sub-par dialogue writing. That said, one can’t decry Metronomik’s efforts at making something unique with this title.

No Straight Roads is one of the most well-seen standalone games of the year, but the potential for this title is definitely higher than the final product, and the creators were able to create a memorable rhythmic adventure title by better implementing their ideas and more accurate campaign design.

For such a short game with so many issues, it seems crazy to recommend No Straight Roads. The story is overly drawn out, almost feeling like it was intended for a longer game, the levels are to be endured and the underlying systems meant to bring depth are just kind of there, staring at you, begging you to yell "Freebird" so it can go on a long tirade about jerks in the audience.

Taking into account everything No Straight Roads does right and wrong, it truly does feel like a game from the 2000s that I would be nostalgic as hell for.

Though No Straight Roads is filled to the brim with character and style, it can’t overcome its needless complexity in a game which is more taxing than it is fun.

No Straight Roads isn't a bad game at all, but it's one that consistently falls short of the tremendous potential that it often hints at. The world, characters, music, and overall idea of its gameplay are ripe for a groundbreaking beat 'em up game, but this, unfortunately, is just a so-so one. Performance problems, camera issues, and repetitive gameplay are all factors that hold this one back from greatness, but these issues are often balanced out by the spectacular boss fights, excellent soundtrack, and charming writing. We'd recommend this one to beat 'em up fans looking for an interesting new entry in the genre, but with the big caveat that you consider this release's flaws before taking the plunge. It's certainly a worthwhile experience, but one that will likely disappoint if you come into it with the wrong expectations.

My three strikes rule had been triggered. It was time to put No Straight Roads aside for something else. It's not a bad game, and if Metronomik updates it to address my concerns I would be glad to get back into the groove of things. The story is engaging and the music sticks in my head for hours but poor controls and bad camera angles have ruined what should be a fantastic game.

Ultimately the result is a fun world, with fun characters that absolutely nails its boss fights, but settles for adequacy on all other fronts. As the first game from a new team, it’s not bad, though.

No Straight Roads is such a good game in concept, but the mechanics hold this gorgeous adventure from being something great. The world feels empty, and the level designs become a repetitive mess. However, if you can look past that, then you are rewarded with some stand-out character writing and fantastic animation work. Call me when No Straight Roads gets its own Netflix series.

No Straight Roads is an epic adventure that hits all the right notes with its design, story, and deep gameplay design. Sadly, the coop mode is a complete disaster that needs more work.

No Straight Roads is an overambitious game that tries to do many things and fails to impress with any of them. Despite fantastic world-building, loveable characters, and great voice acting the game fumbles in the narrative department and suffers from noticeable and frequent technical issues. Lacking gameplay polish also makes No Straight Roads more of a flop than a surefire hit.
