Shantae and the Seven Sirens is an excellent return to form for the belly-dancing indie heroine. It’s a game that looked back to its previous iterations, took notes of what people liked the most about each one of them, and added everything to a blender together with some new gameplay features and quality of life improvements.

Seven Sirens still is an absolutely excellent metroidvania worth enjoying, but I can’t help but feel some things could have been done to make this the ultimate game to surpass Pirate’s Curse. It definitely sets things back on the right track after Half Genie Hero, but it doesn’t quite match the peak the franchise had already set. Regardless, this is a must-own if you felt that the last game wasn’t what you felt Shantae should be, and missed the old style of exploration from which the series started on.

In the end, Shantae and the Seven Sirens overcomes its issues with a variety of fantastic visuals, tight controls, and a new cast of characters that mesh perfectly with the old characters.

It took me a bit under eight hours to finish the game. Though an hour of that was wandering around as I assumed I couldn’t go somewhere I was meant to. I wish it was longer purely because I’d rather play more with my new abilities than start the game over. I will have to as I can’t get 100% on my first save file because late in the game a section gets locked off permanently. That and the intermittent voice acting are the only complaints I have about this game. An option to mark things on the map would have been nice but the world is small enough it’s not hard to remember things. It’s terribly hard to resist the siren call of this game. It’s been hard to finish this review because whenever I go to check something I just keep playing it. I had a really fun time with this game and I give it:

For as easy and positively safe of a bet Shantae and the Seven Sirens might be, it’s an gorgeously well put together platformer that’s a lot of fun to play that comes from a developer that’s become proficient at putting out heavily nostalgic and polished games.

Seven Sirens may not be the best of the Shantae games, but the characters it introduces, the forms it plays with, the story it tells, and the world it crafts boasts exciting possibilities for the future. WayForward have once again done what they do best and given us a brilliant side-scrolling platformer to remember, whether you’re a Shantae veteran or you’re just hearing about the Half-Genie Heroine for the first time.

If you’ve never played a Shantae game before, Seven Sirens is a great entry point to the series, and if you’re already a fan, I can confidently say you’ll be pleased with what Shantae’s latest outing has to offer.

Shantae and the Seven Sirens isn’t just a return to form for a series that’s shown a proclivity for unexpected experimentation. Much like how its characters begin the game vacationing on a tropical island that’s hosting a half-genie festival, the game serves as a lighthearted and much-needed break from 2020’s unceasing assault on everything good and decent.

Shantae and the Seven Sirens offers yet another thoroughly enjoyable and super charming adventure for gamers to embark on – even if there isn’t a whole lot different on show when compared with previous entries in the series. Still, with the more intuitive controls, the creative Monster Cards, and the slick level design, there’s no doubting that Shantae and the Seven Sirens hits the same high standard we’ve come to expect from WayForward’s entertaining series of adventures.

All in all, it’s no surprise that Shantae and the Seven Sirens is a solid entry to the platforming franchise. Way Forward is one the most consistent development teams I’ve run into in the past decade or so and it seems like everything they touch I enjoy.

Shantae and the Seven Sirens stays true to classic entries but pushes the series forward with the inclusion of unique abilities and new characters. Thankfully the game’s smartphone roots don’t appear to hold back the console experience, and we are left with one of the best Shantae games to date. The load times and lack of direction might cause a few points of frustration, but not enough to make this experience any less enjoyable.

Shantae and The Seven Sirens is fun at its purest form. The characters are charming, and will usually deliver the giggles. The gameplay while simple has challenging platforming. I couldn’t tell you how many times I fell to my death because I was impatient. I like to go fast and furious. The environmental art is vibrant, and the design of characters are imaginative. Oh, and the Half-Genies. Yeah, those designs are especially wonderful.

After a long absence, Shantae returns in this Shantae and the Seven Sirens, the new adventure of the most popular half-genius of all time created and developed by Wayforward. Shantae and the Seven Sirens is a game that will not make you have boring moments, on the contrary, it is very fun to play, both for the followers of all your adventures and those who want to start, since you will not feel argumentatively lost despite being the fifth one. Without a doubt a highly recommended title.

With gorgeous character illustrations and vibrant level designs, Shantae and the Seven Sirens makes another bold statement for why Shantae has been going strong for eighteen years. It’s a fun, hair-whipping romp that no one should pass up. May the next eighteen years be filled with more amazing half-genie action!
