This is a game that's three inches deep, but nine miles wide- and I mean that as a compliment. The gameplay and spellcrafting mechanics are easy to understand, and between of the sheer number of spells, races, and classes you can combine, you aren't going to run out of stuff to discover any time soon. And the good news is that there's a ton of enemies that will require you to find and master these spells as quickly as possible. If you're a completionist, Runers is a dream come true.

At first blush, Runers might not seem like anything special. This initial impression is far from the truth.

Roguelikes always hold a strange place in my heart because while it feels exhilarating to have that great run where everything just works, it's so incredibly heart-breaking when that run inevitably fails. Runers will certainly test your patience, but it's kind of like a big puzzle for which someone has conveniently left you a giant tool kit but no instructions. Good luck!

I appreciated both the familiar elements of Runers and the new ideas that were tried. The options for customizing your character were also a great addition, and the variety of enemy types, character classes, and spells was a great asset to the game. The learning curve may inevitably drive some people off, but with a little experience the game becomes quite fun.

It is as intense a game as I have played in recent times and I did get close to smashing a few things in frustration – it is as unforgiving as they come. A fast paced, pick-up-and-play, run-and-gun dungeon crawler that may impress the hardcore – if it doesn't drive them insane.

The difficulty can be daunting at times, and combined with a control scheme that can be a difficult one to master, it can get the better of some players. Still, for only $9.99, you'll get a lot of game in a little package, and if you take your time, can have a good time with it.

Runers is a fast paced and fun roguelike that offers plenty of variety. While there is a lot of reading to figure out exactly what everything does, the simple, twitch mechanics and randomisation make it one that is easy to come back to over and over again.

Runers offers a truly enjoyable experience, with a good marriage of standard roguelike mechanics expanded by the real-time top-down shooter gameplay dynamic and by the spell crafting system.

Runers' deep character creation and excellent spellcrafting makes its sub-par shooting gameplay feel fresh and exciting... at least for long enough to get your money's worth. Approach in bite-sized chunks, and be sure to try the demo.

Runers is cute and clever, despite its uninspiring surface, and I can well imagine it occupying the same comfort gaming berth that The Binding of Isaac did for me a couple of years ago, and Realm of the Mad God before it.
