At the end of the day, outside of some frustrating confusion, and maybe a bit more time looking in rooms for items that might not exist, OutBuddies is an enjoyable way to pass the time.

Outbuddies DX tries to mix things up a bit with unique features like a playable drone partner. The problem is, it tries to be a little too clever for its own good, and its failure to effectively pull off solid fundamentals like the controls and the map system means that the gimmicks suffer as a result. There's a lot we want to love about this game, but its constant annoyances make that hard.

I had hoped that Outbuddies DX would be another great addition with a unique spin to the ridiculous overflow of games in this style, but it’s nothing of the sort.

Outbuddies DX è uno di quei giochi, uno di quelli su cui non scommetti niente e che poi finiscono per sorprenderti a più riprese grazie ad una combinazione di elementi inaspettati. Outbuddies DX is a far more accessible version of this Metroid-inspired adventure. However, there’s still a lack of direction that causes many moments of frustration, which stem from the game’s complex control scheme and maze-like design.

With a vast interconnected cave system to explore, and all the genre trappings and pitfalls, Outbuddies has the elements most will be looking for in a new digital spelunking fix, just without the flair to find its way back to the surface.

Metroidvania games have really been in style for a while now, and their representation on Switch, which was once a bit scarce, has now filled in nicely...
