Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions is the wild and hyper-stylised sports game I've been craving for over a decade. The gameplay is quick to pick up, but hard to master, and the over-the-top anime transitions and animations that are sprinkled throughout the action make it endlessly entertaining. Offline and online versus is sure to give you hours of entertainment if you're the competitive type, while the hefty amount of single-player story content can keep you just as equally entertained. Anyone who's been waiting for the next great arcade sports game need not look any further – it's here, and its name is Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions.

Captain Tsubasa: Rise of the New Champions is a heartful love letter to the masterpiece of Yoichi Takahashi. Despite some flaws, such as a very clumsy progression system and some naive design choces, the game is fun to play, it feels like to be in the anime series, has a great potential online and the chance to create custom team and custom players is fan service at its best.

Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions is an amazing comeback for the series, all the detail that has gone into recreating the feel of the anime is a winning combination alongside the character animation.
Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions is a bit like when you fancy watching a game of footy but there's only the Scottish league on the telly. Sure, it looks like football to the untrained eye, and yes, occasionally it's entertaining just like real football, but you're mainly there hoping that someone is going to get chinned.
Anyone hip to the source material is sure to find a lot to love about Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions.

Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions is a very primitive arcade soccer game with RPG elements based on the popular manga. Like many other projects based on anime and manga from Bandai Namco, it is made for inexperienced casual players, so there is no deep gameplay or any other interesting mechanics. Although if you are a big fan of Captain Tsubasa manga, you can add a few points from yourself to the final score.

Captain Tsubasa : Rise of New Champions is not a very good arcade-style football game. But it has the Captain Tsubasa's signature that offers some epic moments during its matches, and everything fans need to be hooked, like two story modes and some basic but strong ways to play with friends offline or online. In the end, Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions is an exceptionally fun arcade soccer experience that can be forgiven for its lack of an intriguing story because the gameplay is so fun. The story isn’t choppy or hard to follow, it’s just too repetitive to keep the player’s attention.
Even with some of its mechanical and story-telling shortcomings Rise of New Champions is a fun time that shows why this is a beloved series. There's a lot of joy to be had in following Tsubasa's story and creating your own and the flashy football action has some shining moments. With some more tuning and gameplay focus, there's a really bright future for Nankatsu's football star.

As a traditional football game, Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions falls flat in many ways. As its own unique interpretation of the sport, though, there's something oddly compelling about the way it gives each goalie an energy bar as if it were some sort of ball-based fighting game (Street Striker II, if you will). Play it with an open mind and as long as you're not against a game that tries something different – as well as plenty of cutscenes – you'll have fun with this one. If you're a fan of the wider Captain Tsubasa franchise, then you're going to love it even more.
If you’re a football fan that also loves anime then Captain Tsubasa is a must. There’s no denying it’s a fun game. The visual novel style story modes have some great moments and if you enjoy that style of storytelling you’re in for a treat. Hopefully, this is the start of a renaissance for Captain Tsubasa video games because Rise of New Champions is a great foundation for future instalments.
Exciting mix of arcade soccer and story, that convinces Tsubasa fans, but shows nerves in important moments.
