Some players will love this mix of Xcom and classic Souls games, others will hate it. Othercide is definitely not for impatient players looking for quick, easy action. However, if you prefer self-torture, this is the game for you. Visually interesting, attractive and unique graphics, an absolutely great soundtrack, the loss of the last nerves, a ruthless turn strategy and, above all, a real challenge. Othercide offers all this and much more at an affordable price. The developers from Lightbulb Crew hit the nail on the head this time.

The problems with Othercide are mainly some lack of polish, some pacing issues and the repetitious grind that is going to hit hard. The novelty of the game is surprising, and the quality is actually good. Some choices, like practically requiring soldier sacrifice, are going to be off-putting, along with the colour scheme and dark tones and story. Beyond this, the progress run to run feels too slow and may be off-putting on an otherwise unique game.

Othercide is a unique take on the strategy game and adds a new depth with the addition of roguelite elements. Mix that in with unique design and a high risk and reward system, this game is a great place for veterans and newcomers alike.

Anyone who has played a turn-based game will know what's coming, or at least know how to control their units and battle the forces of the Suffering. There's a decent tutorial which shows you many of the game's early elements, allows you to cut loose and find your feet. Then as you progress you will be given other tutorials, mixed in and these drip-feed the management skills and knowledge you need to get to grips with the other systems of the game. The tutorials are good, solid, and explain everything you need to know.

Though there are plenty of other well-made SRPGs on the Switch today, Othercide does more than enough to differentiate itself from the pack and carve out for itself a unique identity. The striking art style, endlessly punishing gameplay and esoteric storytelling ensure that this one will likely only appeal to longtime fans of the genre, but it's more than worth the effort. Despite the difficulty, Othercide is quite a rewarding experience, and this coupled with its well-built gameplay systems makes for a game that we can confidently state is worth your time. Don't let its frequent struggles in the performance department or its intimidating challenge dissuade you; Othercide deserves a spot in your Switch library.

With its beautiful art direction, interesting mix of strategy and rogue-like elements, and addictive gameplay, Othercide is a breath of fresh air in a genre that I didn't realize needed one.

Tactical combat simulations have always been a genre I've had interest in since the early X-Com days but over the years that bar has proven to be a very high one to expect other games, especially indies to reach let alone surpass...

What do you get if you take the framework for XCOM, sprinkle it with gothic horror and fold in a few roguelike elements? Well, what you get is Othercide, which is a strange concoction of genres indeed but it’s a peculiar mixture that on the whole, actually works. With its unique art style and a diverse mix of gameplay elements, I think most players can find something in Othercide to enjoy. I certainly did.

For while at the heart of the game lies a solid combat foundation, its structure seeks to undercut it at every turn. What could have been a taut, captivating experience instead feels like too few ideas stretched too thin.

It is clear that the Lightbulb Crew team went out of their way to present a universe rich in its shades of grey, full of crazy creatures, a curious and volatile villain, as well as stylish heroines, full of impressive skills. Everything gets even deeper thanks to an original soundtrack of great quality that knows how to set the tones of drama, suspense and action at the right times. If you like strategy games and a good challenge, here is one of the big surprises of 2020 and, in my opinion, one of the best titles of its kind ever.

Othercide is a blow of fresh air in the genre of roguelike games. A tactical and addictive experience full of horrors which can blow us if we don’t think properly. Othercide takes the tactical RPG genre to another level with its concept. The soundtrack, epic bosses and a rich and complex system, make you spend many, many hours in front of the TV planning your next attacks. Unfortunately, it is not accessible to everyone, as its high difficulty can alienate fans of the genre. But if you love roguelike titles, this is definitely your game.

Dark, Depressing and Difficult. This interesting mix of tactical combat, existential horror and rogue-like elements punishes mistakes with brutal defeat. Thanks to open information and a boatload of tactical options however, cunning strategists can keep the upper hand and guide their daughters to fight another day.

If you’re an enthusiast of the genre, there’s plenty of depth in the game’s strategy and bosses to justify the price. However, if you’re not an enthusiast of the genre and you’re curious about the game, I would recommend waiting for a sale or holding off entirely if you don’t enjoy the potential frustration of challenging games.

So much of Othercide hinges on how well you handle rogue-lite elements. Those able to plan accordingly will likely suffer fewer losses than reckless players, though there is always an element of luck that comes into play. For most this will be enough to drive the experience forward, ultimately to the boss or another cycle that will end with a final confrontation. It would be nice if the mechanics were deeper or there was more to the experience than punishing mechanics, though there really isn't. Still, fans of tactical RPGs will likely find it engaging and the unique elements make it worth, if nothing else, another go, just don't expect the most complicated experience around.
