Maid of Sker proves there's more to Wales Interactive than many might realise. Their tense horror shines a new light on Welsh folklore while also delivering fantastic audio design and a few effective scares, though it's not without a lobby full of flaws.

Maid of Sker is a competently made game (cornea searing visuals aside), but an awfully executed horror title. From start to finish it struggled to garner, let alone maintain, any semblance of interest of intrigue. The only scare comes from its title and the physical pain it caused was irritating to say the least. As a result, I can safely say that it is not a game worth your time, and you should absolutely give this one a solid miss.

I have some conflicted feelings about Maid of Sker. The giant Resident Evil-esque hotel setting provides an entertaining and exciting place to explore. But the game ended up being lacklustre in other aspects, namely its predictable story, undercooked stealth mechanics and overabundance of jump scares.

Maid of Sker is a good horror game focused on the strengths it can offer, such as the story and the environment. It's possible that it doesn't leave a mark on those who have a long background in horror games, unless you are interested in the story. However, it's ideal to start in the genre.

Overall, Maid of Sker is a decent horror game. If you’re looking for a good scare, then this is a game worth trying. It’s good for those who aren’t into horror games that rely on jump scares to deliver the horror. That being said, it does come with its own problems. Namely on the technical side. Frame rates and constant pop-ins were a hassle to have to go through. But hopefully, you’ll never have to experience that on your end.

Maid of Sker has a fantastic setting and is a true tribute to Wales through the inspiration of its traditions and music. The exploration leaves satisfied in spite of its guided approach and the stealth does not stop being good in spite of its multiple errors and a very improvable enemy AI. A game to keep in mind if we like exploring mansions and discovering secrets.

A beautiful looking experience, hampered only by some bizarre footwear volume issues, Maid of Sker is as every part a horror experience as its established contemporaries.

Overall if you can look past its flaws Maid of Sker provides a fun little romp through a setting haunted by the physical supernatural. Unlocking your path forward can be a rewarding experience but you may need to endure a few trial and errors to get there. The story is serviceable but predictable and is saved by the fantastic realization of the backdrop in which your playing. A serviceable game that will definitely find an audience.

Maid of Sker scratched my horror itch for the year so far for sure. Despite some of my criticisms, it’s not a bad game, far from it. It’s just let down by a very few glaring issues that stop it from being a truly great game. I still really enjoyed my time with it, mainly due to its incredible setting and references to folklore. The story progresses in a very natural way and feels just about the right length at around four hours. The Quiet Ones are an interesting enemy type and their presence in the game is explained brilliantly through the excellent world-building that’s throughout the floors of the hotel. The only problem is that the story of them limits the gameplay experience somewhat to a repetitive sneaking trial and error game and that can get very frustrating, especially when it’s let down by strange AI problems. The puzzles in the game are very fun to work out and feel just as fun to do as the puzzles in a Resident Evil or Silent Hill game. The visuals and sound design are really quite something and lift the experience somewhat, which tells me that there’s potential for a fantastic horror experience to come from Wales Interactive.

Maid of Sker has some decent enough ideas, but the good parts barely outweigh the disappointing bits. I like the idea of stealth gameplay combined with not having a weapon; it just isn’t used effectively here. Likewise, for a story-heavy game, it fumbles with its storytelling.

Maid of Sker doesn't break the mold of traditional survival horror, but it executes its formula with proficient aplomb.

In short, Wales Interactive really hit it out of the park with Maid Of Sker and if this game is an example of what’s to come, I, for one, absolutely can’t wait to see what they do next.

Maid of Sker might not be the scariest horror game out there, but the tense moments, sound-based gameplay design, and intriguing story come together to form a solid horror experience nevertheless.

It's on its own merits the best horror game from Wales Interactive, positioning itself as an interesting and terrifying experience of Wales in the late 19th century.

Maid of Sker sadly doesn’t stand out in the crowd of other horror adventures. The story’s best moments take place in notes found and environments, but as cohesive and engaging as they are, this isn’t a technical marvel. The blending of puzzle-solving and horror-adventure just doesn’t end up working with the stealth elements, and instead makes it feel like it should have been two different games. Luckily, the experience doesn’t overstay its welcome and can be completed in around 6 hours.

A very atmospheric horror game that suffers from technical issues and punishing checkpoints. The unsettling story based off welsh folklore is worth pushing through the adversities nonetheless. As far as first-person horror goes, this isn’t the best choice, but it’s also far from the worst.
