DarkZero's Reviews

1 / 10 - Ace Banana
Oct 20, 2016

It’s somewhat cathartic to discover the single worst launch game in a new hardware’s lineup, but simply calling Ace Banana a rotten fruit that spoils the batch does not do its awfulness justice: this is, simply put, VR poison, the kind of low-budget and poorly optimized trash that would put newcomers completely off VR gaming just as it has began its console infancy.

This is not a game, it's a black hole where no fun can exist, and any hope the Tony Hawk franchise had to reboot itself died a slow suffocating death within. No one should buy this.

VR space exploring is an inspired concept, but a good game idea matters little if the gameplay doesn’t measure up, and Space Rift fails doubly as a VR experience due to its lackluster aesthetics and unrefined VR controls.

If only there was more to it. Currently it feels like a tacked-on bonus mode for a real driving game. The only progress to be made is in the form of aesthetic unlocks and they are all rewarded by accomplishing the same task over and over – have four near-misses with obstacles in a single life as the driver, or by catching the car as it falls off the track as the builder (although this may also cause the car to become glitched into the floor, ending the run). There aren’t even any other maps to mix things up, it’s all the same skybox. The lack of content is deeply disappointing, but the worst part of all is how interesting the idea is.

In all, Golden Force was unfortunately pretty disappointing.

3 / 10 - Sonic Forces
Jan 17, 2018

I won't pretend that Sonic Forces is a disappointment – it telegraphed its kitchen sink approach to content a long time ago. Desperately trying to please every kind of Sonic fan, it is every bit the mishmash of half realised ideas vying for your attention that it seemed like it would be. I guess I just never expected that their attempts to hold that attention would be so feeble.

That right there is probably the best analogy to summarize Loading Human: a cluttered mess that tries to pretend it is high-quality immersion.

3 / 10 - Manual Samuel
Oct 11, 2016

I can’t recommend Manual Samuel to anyone, it’s an awful game. A comedy game devoid of a sense of humour that is only interested in sucking all potential fun out of itself and replacing it with outright frustration. I mean, the game works and all but it’s never good, it’s a bad experience.

You get the impression that if Richardson had someone to bounce ideas off – someone to pick up the slack and point out the bad ideas – he'd be capable of something that's actually interesting. Instead, he's released a work that I really hope doesn't show him at his best.

3 / 10 - Animal Gods
Oct 12, 2015

Animal Gods makes me feel empty after completing it in slightly over two hours. The gameplay is completely vacant of anything fun and the story tries to create a world through techniques that just don't work. The art is nice and the music even has a zen-like quality to it but they cannot redeem the frustration that this game provides.

3 / 10 - The Deer God
Apr 28, 2015

I'm afraid that whilst The Deer God was boasted as "a breathtaking 3d pixel art game that will challenge your religion and your platforming skills", the only thing that it really challenged was my patience. It did look pretty nice though.

Despite the good intentions of the developers, Arizona Sunshine is yet another PSVR game that is plagued by unoptimized controls, queasy camera movement and an overall brief and unremarkable experience that barely qualifies it as a rental, where such an option even possible.

It's unfortunate then that whilst it does start off as a gruesome bit of fun to play from the other side, the experience hurriedly becomes monotonous and somehow manages to outstay its welcome in spite of the already brief ninety-minute playtime.

4 / 10 - Ravenbound
Apr 9, 2023

Summing up Ravenbound was a challenge because, despite its flaws, the game isn't bad and I did have a good time when it worked as intended. However, it's just badly executed with the lack of missions, explorations, and many frustrating bugs that make Ravenbound hard to recommend. Systemic Reaction are aware of the issues and are actively talking to their community through patch notes to, hopefully, revive this game and make it the fun roguelite it's asking to be.

With the disappointing narrative being sacrificed for bad jokes instead of teaching us anything about our protagonist or informing us why he made the terrible decisions he did, a couple of hard crashes and awkward bugs when trying to play through the DLC, and mediocre boss fights that the original game would have frowned upon, I can't really recommend the expansion.

4 / 10 - TowerMancer

TowerMancer leaves a lot to be desired, which is just so annoying because it feels like they almost had something great, something you wouldn't be able to pull yourself away from.

It’s a shame that such smooth controls, great audio and classic visuals were wasted on a game that is just so outdated.
