Monolithsoft has culminated in an ending that they’ve had their sights on for over a decade, and it shows in the level of detail and quality of life improvements that they’ve made emanating from that ten-plus years’ worth of experience. It’s a robust conclusion to the JRPG franchise and spans well over a hundred hours of gameplay, leading up to a finale that long-time fans will thoroughly enjoy without leaving newer players wanting. Although the true potential of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 feels held back by the limitations of the Switch’s hardware, developer Monolithsoft has clearly taken all of the lessons and experiences that they’ve accumulated over the years and crafted a gem that even Riku the Nopon would consider priceless.

Naoki Yoshida and his team are at the top of their game here, producing something that is at both worthy of the Final Fantasy name and carrying on the astonishing work of A Realm Reborn's turnaround. More than that, it's a magnificent foundation for the coming months of patches. Long may it continue.

The remakes of these two classic games was masterfully done. Square Enix is no stranger to remakes and upgrades but they have outdone themselves with this iteration of X / X-2. From the orchestrated score, to the increased polygon count and improved textures the game is atheistically better in every way. If you missed out on playing these games on the PS2 this new layer of polish on these classic gems will leave you unable to guess one is 14 years old this year.

9 / 10.0 - Bloodborne
Mar 23, 2015

I could go on about Bloodborne, but I won't. I'll simply say that it's one of the best action RPGs I've ever played. It's brutally difficult, but never cheap, and it's one of the most atmospheric games in recent years. If you fancy hard games, if you love a good deep RPG that doesn't hold your hand, then you owe it to yourself to play this one. It's a shame it's only on the PS4, but frankly, Bloodborne is worth buying the system to play.

This really is a Final Fantasy for both new and old hats to the franchise alike.

9 / 10.0 - Darkest Dungeon
Feb 3, 2016

What makes Darkest Dungeon a fascinating experience isn't the rich character progression and overarching strategy, but the way it manages to make each character feel like a living, breathing human before asking you how much you'll ruin them to increase your bottom line. There's pockets of subtext that I continually filled with my own moral struggle. Spaces left ingeniously blank where, when I allow myself to reflect on my actions, I realize that the greatest evil isn't waiting at the end of a dimly lit crypt. It is sitting right in this chair, typing these words.

9 / 10.0 - Overwatch
Jun 17, 2016

Blizzard's first foray into the first person shooter genre was a bold move for the studio best known for its strategy titles and its MMO, World of Warcraft. Blizzard is first to market with Overwatch, its entry into the nascent, but rapidly growing hero shooter and unfortunately for everyone else, Blizzard's managed to hit the ball out of the park on its first swing.

9 / 10.0 - Tyranny
Nov 10, 2016

Tyranny is a game that must be played by any RPG fan. Some may knock its “old school” approach and style, but that’s about the only complaint that could be levied against such a wonderfully unique and deep RPG. It does everything Pillars of Eternity tried to do and it does so better. Consider Tyranny highly recommended and one of the best RPGs of the year.

I cannot wait to see where Morrowind's story ends, and where the next year of content takes us in Nirn. It's fun to think that this is just the first chapter in years of content ESO has up its sleeve. Talk about starting off with a bang.

Assassin's Creed is one of those franchises which started out strong but after a few games the shine began to tarnish. I'm not sure what state Origins was in when Ubisoft decided to give it extra time to iterate, but it was clearly time well spent. Origins is exactly what the series needed to make it new and wonderful again. It's not perfect, but it sets a great roadmap for the future and the imperfections can be honed into something even more incredible.

Pillars of Eternity plays more like a Dungeons and Dragons campaign, and with the ability to take it with you on long commutes or boring events you have to attend, this makes it a great addition to any RPG lover’s catalog.

I've enjoyed previous entries in the Monster Hunter series but none of them have felt as compelling as World. This entry is more accessible than any of the previous games yet still manages to have deep crafting and gearing systems for the later game. The gameplay loop is tight and rewarding.

Skyrim may be aging, but it's still easily one of the best RPGs ever made, and a pure joy to play on the Switch. Add-on support would be nice, and the PC version is still definitely the most "complete" version because of the modding, but if you've ever wished you could have Skyrim on the go - Bethesda and Nintendo just granted that wish.

9 / 10.0 - Mordhau
May 8, 2019

Even with the struggles over the last week, the launch of Mordhau has clearly been a success for Triternion and players alike. Even as horrible as I am at the combat it is impossible to deny the melee fighting is a welcome reprieve from the usual first-person shooter or Diablo-esque hack-n-slash combat. The dev team seems intent on keeping the community updated on issues as they arise, and they have already announced they will be adding more content to the game.Score: 9.0
