9 / 10.0 - Axiom Verge
Sep 1, 2016

Axiom Verge is otherwise essentially flawless and it's one of my favorite indie games. This Wii U version is arguably the best one, too, so even if you've played it before it may very well be worth the double dip. And man, what's up with that post-credits scene?!

9 / 10.0 - Axiom Verge
Oct 5, 2017

Regardless of small blemishes, Axiom Verge is one of the best Metroid-esque games I've played outside of Samus' orbit. It's the rare game that seems to understand exactly what made that series so spectacular, using that understanding to craft original power-ups and concepts that make this more than just a hollow Metroid rip-off.

Skylanders Trap Team is a fantastic, well-made game. The lengthy story mode is filled with excellent gameplay set in gorgeous environments with top-shelf graphics and sound. The bonus modes, while focused mostly on combat, are a lot of fun. Outside of the over-powered and integral nature of the new Trap Master figures, Trap Team is close to being the best Skylanders game yet.

9 / 10.0 - Velocity 2X
Sep 21, 2018

There are moments that can frustrate you if you are careless, but Velocity 2X also rewards the players who stick around. After hours upon hours just toying around with levels, I felt like an absolute boss nailing down every obstacle to a tee. Even now, I find myself experimenting and having a fantastic time doing so.

The only issues with Guacamelee are simply minor quibbles that keep it from true masterpiece status. It's hard to worry too much about these slight imperfections when the game hits so many right notes, ranging from the lavish presentation to the deep combat and platforming. On the whole, it's a brisk and refreshing joy to play, with a lively personality that's eminently endearing. Guacamelee is a fantastic Metroid-inspired platformer that shouldn't be missed.

9 / 10.0 - Transistor
Oct 30, 2018

But it's so damn short. Red's epic lasts just a few hours. New Game + promises to carry over my progress and beef up the Process accordingly, and the Sandbox still hides challenges, so there's replayability here. Still, I want more time with Red and her endearing sword. Transistor is too good to end so soon.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag boasts tons of content, an exciting story, and plenty of fun gameplay. Some of the series tropes are running thin as the series is now going on its sixth entry, but it is still a quality experience. Black Flag is currently my favorite game in the series, not only because of its heavy use of piracy, but because of the constant swapping between land and sea gameplay. Black Flag is a must have for fans of Assassin's Creed, and newcomers with a love for pirates will surely find something to love.

9 / 10.0 - Elliot Quest

This is a tremendous game that, if you have any affinity for aspects of Zelda II and Metroid games, is something you should be getting as soon as possible.

9 / 10.0 - Year Walk
Sep 16, 2015

This game masterfully balances simplicity and challenge, engaging the Wii U in a way that will make it rewarding even if you've already played on another device. The utter stillness of the environment keeps you on edge as the macabre creatures of yore add a dose of discomfort or terror when you least expect it.

9 / 10.0 - Splatoon
May 31, 2015

Overall, Splatoon makes for an amazing online game, likely the most engaging online experience Nintendo has ever made. The multiplayer, regardless of its lack of voice chat or randomized parties, is sublime, successfully making a shooter that is easy to hop into but tough to master. The single-player might be short and linear, but it's a wonderful change of pace from the frenzy of online play.

9 / 10.0 - Bayonetta
Feb 19, 2018

While it'll be easy to overlook this in favor of the sequel, in doing so you'd not only be doing a disservice to the game, but a disservice to yourself.

The levels inspire me to push harder to master them. Now combine that with a fun cast of characters and a terrific presentation, and you have the funkiest of the bunch.

You hop on for the ride, enjoy some groovy tunes, and overcome a slew of challenges along the way. Even though every run is different, I always felt I was in control. It's hard to get on the beat, but once over that initial hump, Crypt of the Necrodancer becomes one of the most intriguing experiences available on the Nintendo Switch eShop. Don't sleep on it.

200cc performs shockingly well online, although I feel like I'm having more dropped games overall than I had prior to the 2nd DLC wave. I will say that racing online in 200cc makes me feel a little better about myself as I watch other human players go through the exact same struggles I am. This second DLC pack is great—better than the first—and I highly recommend it.

9 / 10.0 - Rocket League
Nov 24, 2017

I've been playing quick matches while waiting for the NYC subway and during my lunch break at work. The one major negative is the resolution in undocked mode. I personally haven't felt like it's hindered a match for me, but it's still pretty annoying. Nonetheless, there's endless amounts of fun to be had with Rocket League and even with some graphical shortcomings it's still a must buy on the Switch.

9 / 10.0 - Wii Fit U
Nov 11, 2013

While it would be nice if more difficult exercises were readily available from that start and if routines didn't feature a jerky start-stop-start progression, Wii Fit U remains the best exercise game I've ever played.

Since Into the Breach hit at the end of August, there has been a barrage of quality strategy games on the Switch, so it can be tempting to skip Valkyria Chronicles. But don't do it. It's a brisk game, and there are some things like the graveyard for fallen troops that I wish were carried into future titles. War may be hell, but Valkyria Chronicles is a little slice of heaven.

9 / 10.0 - Bayonetta 2
Oct 12, 2014

Bayonetta 2 is one of the best games to ever grace the Wii U. The sequel feels tighter, less obnoxious, and is a blast to play through.

9 / 10.0 - Pushmo World
Jun 5, 2014

Pushmo World is another stellar entry in one of Nintendo's premier downloadable franchises. While it's a bummer that the quirks of Crashmo didn't make a return, no one really loses when Pushmo World is so wonderfully crafted, with awesome puzzles and excellent new twists. Let's just hope that Crashmo World is up next on Mallo's quest.
