Maybe you missed the great games of the 8-bit era, or maybe you're a parent who wants to subject your children to the punishment of Castlevania, Battletoads, and Mega Man that you went through. For you, I think Shovel Knight goes beyond being a polished, fun, challenging experience. It's a curation of gaming history in a package that's palatable to today's audience.
This is the definitive version of Diablo 3. It's the best game I've played on both the PS4 and Xbox One, which surprises me. The changes made have me hooked. If you own a next-gen console, you'd be doing yourself a huge disservice if you don't purchase Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition -- unless you just hate the Diablo franchise. In that case, I can't help you.
Batman's biggest, best, most polished game yet. Rocksteady created a masterpiece that really lets you BE the Batman.
Own a Wii U? Buy Bayonetta 2. Don't own a Wii U? Buy a Wii U.
Civilization VI is the best strategy game available on the market and a must-buy for everyone who enjoys a good strategy game. It improves and revitalizes the franchise on so many levels. This might be one of the strongest Game of the Year contenders
Resident Evil 7 is the best horror and I've played in a VERY long time. I'm excited to see where Capcom goes with the series and I hope they maintain this great sense of horror.
Red Dead Redemption 2 feels like Rockstar's new GTA 3 as in it takes massive leaps towards a new era of open-world gaming the likes of which have never been seen or at the very least executed to this level of quality courtesy of the borderline photorealistic graphics and remarkable game design.
Expertly crafted both in story and gameplay, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice is at the same time both a unique experience and a derivation of some of gaming's best.
While it may not resemble the older games in the franchise, that might actually be its strength. It proves that just like Kratos, who was able to mature and grow as a character, letting go of his past while not forgetting who he was, the newest game was able to do the same.
With an emotionally rich story, gameplay that fulfills childlike dreams of being a superhero, and an engaging world with no shortage of puddles, Marvel's Spider-Man is not only the definitive Spider-Man game but one of the best games of the generation. Insomniac's not playing the "greatest hits" of Spider-Man, they're making a new era of the webhead that will go down as a groundbreaking age in superhero gaming.
Nier: Automata never feels stale or boring thanks to director Yoko Toro's ability to find a way to keep things fresh through gameplay, presentation, and story. Everything about this JRPG is nothing short of gripping and mesmerizing, it's one of those generation-defining games where people will look back on it decades from now talking about it still filled with awe.
Deep gameplay at an unseen fidelity and attention to detail cement Red Dead Redemption 2 as Rockstar's newest genre-defining adventure. In spite of technical issues at launch, the PC version reigns supreme as the decisive way to experience the Wild West epic at uncapped framerates, obscene resolutions and incredible visuals.
I can't praise Bluepoint enough with just how much care and attention went into not only bringing this world back to life, but bringing it back in such an authentic way compared to its original. But even though Bluepoint will be getting most of the praise here for their exceptional work, I think it's also important to recognize FROMSoftware's original design, and just how well that design held up over the years. Souls fans with a PS5 certainly won't need to be persuaded to hop in, but I'd easily recommend Demon's Souls for the uninitiated to check out where the this third-person subgenre was conceived. The difficulty can be daunting, but it can also be overcome with enough patience and determination.
A game that's mechanically similar to the Metroid of old, yet still manages to have its own identity with some truly awesome concepts. It's gorgeous, challenging and a delight to play.
With call outs to previous bad voice acting, great gameplay, character swapping, surprisingly good writing, and a whole zombie load of feels – Resident Evil: Revelations 2 lives up to the Revelations standards.
A fantastic co-operative twin-stick shooter with a surprising amount of depth. It's unrelenting, but not unfair. Pick this one up and convince your friends to do the same.
If you like being drowned in nostalgia in a very well done rendition of one of your favorite childhood games which doesn't ruin the experience, yea, this is the Resident Evil for you.
Keeping everything that made Far Cry 3 so fun, but also adding a few new elements to shake things up a bit, Far Cry 4 is a fantastic successor.
The world and characters come to life in CDPR's conclusion to The Witcher trilogy. A few minor bugs can't ruin what is otherwise a masterful game. If only the combat was slightly better
Gorgeous, challenging, heartbreaking but equally uplifting. Ori and the Blind Forest is a Metroidvania that shouldn't be missed by fans of the genre.
