88% - Bastion
Sep 9, 2016

When I think about my brief time with Bastion, I can only remember positives. Sure, falling off the maps was a frequent endeavor, but that was always my fault and sloppiness. Yes, sometimes aiming weapons became a chore, but often it was, again, my fault. The controls were pretty tight, and the areas were brief enough where the autosave feature (which I believe only activated once you landed back in the Bastion) worked well. The soundtrack was fine, but the narration by, essentially, the only speaking character (though Zia speaks at the end) was phenomenal. I highly recommend trying this indie title because the narrative alone is worth the enjoyable toil. With plenty of gameplay, a myriad choice in town features, and a solid voice performance by the awesome narrator, Bastion is worthy of the risk.

The game itself is pleasing to the eye. Although it was pretty great to look at with graphics set to Ultra, even set to Low while playing on my laptop I can definitely say it wasn't an eyesore at all.

Overall, despite my criticisms, Transistor is a game that is definitely worth your time. If you're a person who loves an interesting story, amazing soundtrack, beautiful visuals, and cheap games (it's only $20 on Steam) then there is no reason why you shouldn't be playing this. After you beat it, you could even have some more fun and join the long and vast discussions about the game's story on Reddit and YouTube, to name a few places. Or not, your choice!

So, does Quantum Break live up to the hype? Yes and no. From the get go, the game has been marketed as a story heavy experience with cinematic gameplay and storytelling. In that regard, the game absolutely delivers, and if you went in expecting that, you're likely to enjoy it.

In conclusion, Battleborn is a difficult game for me to review. The maps, especially the competitive ones, can feel uninspired, but the art style of the overall presentation is comically beautiful. The writer job is wonderful, as is Gearbox's norm, and the deep roster of 25 playable characters will only get bigger with future DLC.

87% - Hacknet

All in all, this was a game that, after expecting little more than an entertaining diversion, turned out to be so much more. A minimalistic aesthetic, awesomely satisfying gameplay and an unexpectedly gripping and mysterious narrative work together to create something truly brilliant in Hacknet.

If you enjoyed it the first time but didn’t see yourself playing through it again for speed-runs or leisure, then you’ll want to opt out of this release. However, if you found replaying the main adventure a worthwhile endeavor and like plotting out different ways to complete the game or tackling its challenge mode, it earns the $15.00 it asks for admission. Now, if you’ve never played the game before but enjoy this style of gameplay, I can safely say, trying it out is hardly a complex decision.

Realm of Shadows is a great first episode in what is sure to be some of Telltale’s finest work. The presentation is both familiar and unique, with a strong comic book vibe that takes clear inspiration from Nolan’s trilogy (particularly in the music department). If you’re a fan of Telltale’s previous work, you’ll find plenty to enjoy in their latest offering.

Sunset Overdrive achieves what many games unfortunately fall short of. That something is raw enjoyment. The self-deprecating atmosphere serves as a reminder that games are supposed to be lighthearted and fun. Sometimes a little insanity is welcome. The silly story won't be enduring, but the laughs and experiences you have are permanent.

Rather than call it an expansion, The Taken King proves to be an overall facelift for what once was an empty, repetitive shooter. Worlds feel more lively with the constant Taken threat interfering with classic Cabal, Fallen, and Vex enemies. Allies in the Tower and Reef have much more to offer and make your guardian feel more relevant in a period of galactic combat. While you still cannot expect a tale of epic proportions, Destiny embraces what it always has been at its core – a shoot and loot festival.

Twilight Princess offers a slight deviation from the cliché save the princess story, and the incorporation of wolf Link contributes a new avenue to explore. As far as RPG length, Twilight Princess is about average, clocking in at approximately 40+ hours for full completion (and adding a little extra should you utilize the Midna and wolf Link amiibo).

I just want to start by saying that I’ve been waiting at least 5 years for this game. I had already been well into the Fire Emblem series when I first played Persona 3 and Persona 4. It was shortly after playing those, and loving them, that a friend informed me of a rumor of a crossover of the series. Back then, it had only been a rumor with no details to when or how it would come to life. So I imagined and dreamed up scenarios for how the two separate style of games would merge. These imaginations of mine looked nothing like Tokyo Mirage, but this game is everything I never knew I wanted.

But let me tell you, even though I died a multitude of times, I couldn’t stop playing Leap of Fate. Minutes turned into hours as I continued to say, “Just one more game.” While I wasn’t particularly concerned with the exposition (though completing each stage brought a very interesting line of narrative), the gameplay had me hooked. The completely randomized levels and strategizing the selection of randomized upgrades melds perfectly together to create an incredibly fun concoction of intense and furiously quick gameplay that leaves you satisfied. I will be playing this game for quite a while to come.

The true triumph of Battlefleet is that it provides the opportunity, after a number of cases of trial and error, to succeed. Each battle brings with it a thrilling trepidation and, as you progress, the infuriating futility of past endeavors begin to blossom into a glorious aptitude, hinting that you might just be getting the hang of it after all.

The premise of the game is dark. It still finds a way to be light and humorous, even if it is a morbid comedy. The humor can be found in the story paragraphs that appear on the map and the item descriptions. The knights are cartoon-like and so is the King. And while about death there is no gore to this game.

The stylized look is stunning and interesting visually. Even with the issues of the levels and controls, Bound uses the unique movements to make it more compelling and engaging. The story is emotional and deep. The lack of narration used to tell the story makes it even better.

The combat is fun, and there's even more weapons now that you can imbue with various elemental powers. The boss fights, though forgettable, are still tense and challenging. The problem is that Dark Souls II must be compared to the original Dark Souls, and it falls flat in every category. By attempting to make both newcomers and veterans of Dark Souls happy, Dark Souls II succeeds in neither, and is an unsatisfying experience because of it.

A helpful tip is that you'll need to collect the game's trinkets while you can, as much to the completionist's dismay it's not possible to return to your world save after the final credits have rolled. Nevertheless, Ori and the Blind Forest is one of those games to be savoured while it lasts.

Overall, I'm proud I was a backer for this game and am pleased with the work Inafune and his team put into it. The trailer was indeed terrible, but my focus is always on the quality of the game itself. To all the people judging the game without playing it and putting it down: You're doing a fine job of showing your ignorance and unwillingness to be objective.
