Simply put, Starfield is Bethesda's greatest-ever RPG. The living, breathing universe they have created is one of the most impressive in the gaming space and the sound effects and musical score push the immersion to near perfection. If only I could stop speaking to the back of NPC's heads.
Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is a tale of redemption in its purest form. No rubbish, no corpo spin, dedication, passion, and determination to deliver on promises made long ago. The team at CD Projekt Red may have taken a rough road to get here, but now they can rest easy. Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is finally, the game we all hoped it would be.
Mortal Kombat 1 delivers one of the most impressive and exciting storylines I’ve ever experienced in this genre. The voice acting, the facial animations, everything comes together in near-perfect harmony. Fighting is fun, challenging, and rewarding every step of the way. Mortal Kombat 1 is brutally brilliant, and probably the best Mortal Kombat game I’ve ever played.
For The King 2 is the perfect sequel. It takes the very best components of its predecessor and uses those time-tested elements to raise the series to new heights. To put it simply, For The King 2 is one of the best strategy-based co-op experiences on the market today.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 feels like the first proper RPG I’ve played in years. Its world is captivating, filled with stories both told and waiting to be found. This is a must-play for RPG fans who’ve grown tired of the hand-holding nature of modern games and just want to get lost somewhere magical and quite frankly, brutal as hell.
Far Cry 4 builds on the features of the Far Cry franchise and remains true to the quality of storytelling, delivery of mechanics and awe of the environment that we’ve come to expect. A Game of the Year contender without a doubt but the franchise will need a little freshening up with its next installment.
Worms Battlegrounds won’t rewrite the rulebook and some Worms fans may feel a little disappointed with the lack of the next-gen leap but for the hardcore Worms supporters out there, Worms Battlegrounds is the perfect remedy for the lack of carnage blues.
The story highlights underlying issues in society while still staying true to the original point of video-games, to have good fun. As a package, Watch Dogs is easily one of the greatest titles available on next-generation consoles and I for one cannot wait to see what Ubisoft do with a sequel.
There are many hidden elements and motives that unravel as the story progresses but it’s an experience worthy of your time. Best of all, you don’t need to have played the previous Assassin’s Creed titles as the story presents itself with enough depth to feature as a stand-alone story; although previous experience with the storyline will undoubtedly offer a little more substance.
The Witcher 3 does have some minor flaws but ultimately is a game every RPG fan should play this year. This game is easily going to be a contender for Game Of The Year in 2015.
Personally I can’t recommend this game enough. If you have an evening available and you are looking for a great game then you should give The Vanishing Of Ethan Carter a try!
Fallout 4 is not perfect. It’s plagued with minor annoyances and even a few game-breaking exploits but that doesn’t take away from what Bethesda have created in what should easily scoop up Game of the Year across the board. Fallout 4 is a very S.P.E.C.I.A.L. kind of game and one every fan of the open-world RPG should experience.
While the game is unrelenting and punishes you for any little mistake, you cannot compete with the level of gratification that comes with beating this game. Of all the games I've played this year, this is by far the best one and by a wide margin. Go forth, and fear no darkness!
Though there is a lot to play in 2017, Persona 5 is one RPG you just can't pass up. The wait was well worth it, and you shouldn't be surprised to see Persona 5 pop up on quite a few game-of-the-year lists come December.
Undertale has personality in spades, paired with one of the most unique hooks in recent history. Those looking for something new need not look any farther – Undertale is your game.
I had a lot of difficulty finding opponents for the Hacking Invasion so there may still be some teething problems with the matchmaking. Again it feels very shallow. I load into a small area and attempt to hack data while remaining out of sight – not an easy thing to do when your opponent has a Quadcopter that can scan targets in seconds. Another fun distraction but I can't see it carrying the game much past the original content.
Future Tone is a rare case where the sheer quantity of content is matched by the highest quality. Packing catchy beats, addictive gameplay, and some serious challenge, this is one title that is worth coming back to for years to come.
The Final Station really became more about the mystery of what’s going on more than anything else. At first, it was just move the train and rescue the people. As I got more passengers and read more notes, however, I started to realize things weren’t quite as they seemed. At the end of the 4-5 hour journey, you might have a few more questions than answers, but overall the ride was worth the toll.
Games created with this level of attention to detail are hard to find. Throughout the past decade we can each pinpoint various favorite titles that truly touched our hearts and minds, but Owlboy stands at the top or near it. This is the kind of game that transcends time as its art, gameplay, story and music truly should be heralded as a shining example for developers to aspire towards. Whether this is something that can be duplicated remains to be seen as this title is a true labor of love and passion. Every frame in the shows the deep level of love that is only possible by withholding a game until perfection. I’ve only played a handful of games that could be considered perfect in my time and this stands among them. Congratulations go to the developers for creating a masterpiece.
