10 / 10.0 - Resident Evil 2
Jan 28, 2019

This isn’t only the best title that’s come out of the Resident Evil series, but also one of the best games that Capcom have ever released. Whether you’re a fan of the original, enjoy horror games in general, or just appreciate a finely crafted video game, Resident Evil 2 is one title you simply do not want to miss out on. Raccoon City is back and it’s never been more impressive…

Final Fantasy VII Remake is an outstanding game that doesn’t only live up to all expectations but also manages to completely exceed them. I wish I could go into detail about every tiny thing that makes the game so special, but to do so would be unfair to players who just deserve to uncover them all themselves. Just know that every element of the game comes together perfectly, whether it’s with the rewarding exploration, the action-packed combat, or the stellar visual presentation that’ll keep you in awe throughout. I’ll admit that the sense of nostalgia from my younger years made Final Fantasy VII Remake all the more special to me, but don’t let that fool you into thinking that this game isn’t spectacular in its own right. Final Fantasy VII Remake is simply one of Square Enix’s best games ever, and it’s still as ground-breaking, epic and charming as it was back in 1997. Here’s hoping it’ll be a shorter wait for the next episode…

10 / 10.0 - Nioh 2
Mar 17, 2020

I already knew I was going to enjoy Nioh 2 after loving the original, but even I didn’t expect to be so blown away by all of the improvements that have been brought to the experience this time around. Between the super satisfying combat, the brilliantly implemented yokai abilities, the stand out battles with the deadly enemies, and the fun online co-op, Nioh 2 seems to have everything. Simply put, it’s the best game I’ve played so far this year. Nioh 2 offers an outstanding action-experience that improves upon the original game in almost every way – the PlayStation 4 has yet another amazing console-exclusive to welcome into gamer’s lives.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 is simply perfect, with the satisfyingly brilliant skateboarding mechanics standing the test of time over twenty years on from its original release. Add to that some stunning new visuals, additional gameplay mechanics and challenges, a robust ‘Create a Park’ feature that allows endless possibilities, and, of course, a banging soundtrack, and you’ll quickly find you’re in skateboarding heaven with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2. Bravo, Activision and Vicarious Visions… you’ve ABSOLUTELY nailed it.

10 / 10.0 - Hades
Sep 25, 2020

Hades is as close to perfect that a rogue-like is going to get, with its engaging story, robust and enjoyable combat, and satisfying sense of progression coming together to make for a breath-taking experience. It absolutely looks the part too, with Supergiant Games’ trademark beautiful visuals on show across the entirety of the game. It does have the occasional technical hiccup here and there on the Nintendo Switch, but it wasn’t enough of a problem to even slightly hinder my experience with the game. Hades is simply gaming perfection that both newcomers and veterans of the rogue-like dungeon-crawling genre are sure to adore… just do yourself a favour and buy it. Immediately. What are you waiting for?!

10 / 10.0 - It Takes Two
Mar 30, 2021

It Takes Two is a wonderful co-op adventure that features a touching narrative, inventive gameplay mechanics that constantly keep things varied, and a whimsical world that’s packed full of detail… what more could you want? I was genuinely blown away with just how clever the game was, with the focus on teamwork never growing tiresome but remaining intuitive in design from the start to end. It’s absolutely brilliant. I really do think it is one of the best co-op games that I have ever played, and honestly, some of the sequences in the game will remain with me for a long time (especially with that elephant). If you’re looking for a co-op adventure that’ll bedazzle you with charm and fun, look no further than It Takes Two – it’s simply an unmissable experience.

Final Fantasy VII Remake was already an outstanding release, but Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade SOMEHOW makes it even better. Whether it’s with the improved visuals, the smoother performance, the faster load times, or the additional content that fleshes out the Final Fantasy VII Remake universe further, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade offers something to please everyone. I don’t care if you poured hundred of hours into the base game already… this is one PlayStation 5 port that you simply should NOT ignore. And by the way, Square Enix… I’ll NEVER stop pronouncing Yuffie’s name as yuff-ee.

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection is an outstanding release that brings two brilliant games to the PlayStation 5 in style. The fact that both Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: Lost Legacy are fantastic games to play anyway makes it worth investing in, but the dazzling visual and performance enhancements, the immersive DualSense features, and super-speedy load times really make this an alluring package that all PlayStation 5 gamers need to own.

Horizon: Forbidden West is a remarkable game that blew me away with its excellent storytelling, deep and engaging gameplay, and breath-taking visuals. I found myself eagerly anticipating every twist and turn of the story, the set pieces left me in awe of just how fun and varied combat is, whilst exploring the world and uncovering all of its secrets and side quests was a real treat. And did I mention it looks ridiculously stunning? It really has it all. The first game is one of my favourite PlayStation titles of all time, but Horizon: Forbidden West exceeds it in almost every way. Some minor graphical issues here and there do stop the game from feeling ‘perfect’, but they don’t stop Horizon: Forbidden West from being a masterpiece of game design.

Metroid Prime Remastered takes a classic release and improves every aspect of it, with the game looking and feeling even better than ever before. I absolutely adore Theatrhythm Final Bar Line, with the brilliant rhythm-based gameplay and rich song selection making it a real treat for Final Fantasy fans. The accessibility of the gameplay makes it easy for just about anyone to play, whilst the complexities introduced in the higher difficulties ensure that it always remains entertaining no matter how many hours you’ve already put into the game. Add to that the rewarding party building elements, the host of unlockables, and the fact that you have over 380 songs to play through, and you’ll quickly find that there’s plenty to love about this celebration of all things Final Fantasy.

Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo is a superb visual novel that blends together gripping storytelling with some really clever gameplay mechanics. I was completely hooked in from start to end, so much so that I found it hard to stop thinking about the game each time I stopped playing… it’s THAT good. I’d love to go into depth about all the things that make the game so damn good, but I don’t want to spoil anything here. Just trust me when I say it’s a fantastic experience and one that I’d recommend to both visual novel veterans and those who’ve been itching to dip their toes into the genre.

The stunning visuals, the combat enhancements, the improved AI across allies and enemies, the refined boss encounters, and the new additions – they all come together to make Resident Evil 4 Remake the most impressive release in the series to date and a jaw-dropping experience as a whole. Whether you’re a newbie to the series, a returning veteran, or simply want to see what all the fuss was about in the first place, it’s hard not to be blown away by everything Resident Evil 4 Remake offers. Street Fighter 6 is an outstanding fighting experience that complements its stellar combat mechanics with addictive game modes. World Tour Mode is an absolute blast for those who want a story-driven experience, whilst the Battle Hub is fully fleshed out to keep competitive players coming back for years on end. Add to that the improved accessibility that makes it easy for newbies to dive right in, the wonderfully vibrant visuals that bring the action to life, and the fantastic roster of characters made up of iconic favourites and new faces, and it’ll be clear that Street Fighter 6 exceeds the high standards of the series. 10 / 10.0 - Final Fantasy XVI
Jun 30, 2023

Final Fantasy XVI doesn’t feel like a traditional Final Fantasy experience, but that doesn’t stop it from being a masterpiece. There has been a big leap in the evolution of the gameplay as the series moves into action RPG territory, but the results are astounding, with the game offering some of the best combat I’ve seen in any action title. Add to that the gripping narrative, the astounding visuals, the wonderful soundtrack, and the sheer scale of the epic adventure, and it’ll be hard not to be wowed by just how magnificent it feels to play. I have no doubt it won’t be for everyone (there’ll be those that crave to see the series return to its roots) and there are some things the game could do better. As it stands, though? Final Fantasy XVI is simply magnificent. It might not feel like the Final Fantasy titles of yesteryear, but it still has the epic sense of scope and phenomenal production values that have made the franchise so beloved by fans.

10 / 10.0 - Sea of Stars

Sea of Stars is an unmissable RPG that blends together wonderful storytelling, captivating gameplay, and dazzling audio and visuals into one masterful package. Honestly, I was utterly enthralled by the whole experience from start to end, with every aspect of the game’s design perfectly crafted to ensure it keeps the player completely hooked in. Whether you’re encountering one of the game’s charming characters for the first time, fighting through a challenging boss battle that puts your skills to the test, or simply admiring one of the many majestic sights of the world whilst some beautiful music plays in the background, it’s hard not to be blown away by the wonders of Sea of Stars.

10 / 10.0 - Baldur's Gate 3
Oct 5, 2023

Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the best games ever made… do I need to say anything else? Its storytelling is amazing, the combat is enthralling, and the world is one I love being a part of. It plays wonderfully on the PlayStation 5, both from a technical perspective and with its controls, whilst the sheer amount of content here will easily keep players hooked in for a long, long time. 2023 has already been a wonderful year for gaming, but Baldur’s Gate 3 really is the crème de la crème. Don’t be surprised to see it rule over the ‘Game of the Year’ lists this year…

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is a roaring success for Insomniac Games, with the sequel managing to improve upon everything that came before it in the previous titles. Sure, there’s familiarity to be found in the combat and the New York setting, but there have been enough innovations and additions made to ensure the experience still feels incredibly fresh and thrilling. Add to that the gripping story, the clever Spider-Man swapping dynamic, the traversal that looks and feels wonderful, and the sheer wealth of things to do across the varied missions, and it’ll become clear that this isn’t only the best Spider-Man game that has ever released, but also one of the best PlayStation 5 games too.

The Last of Us Part II Remastered offers the definitive way for players to experience what was already a masterpiece, with the visual enhancements and additions making the game even better than it was before. Whilst the improved visuals, performance, and load times go a long way in making it look and feel better to play, the new modes like No Return and Lost Levels feel like genuinely substantial additions that’ll even keep veterans of the game gleefully glued to their screens once more. It all comes together to act as the perfect reminder that Naughty Dog are masters of their craft, with The Last of Us Part II Remastered sitting at the pinnacle of gaming greatness.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is absolutely brilliant, with the excellent combat and traversal of the game complemented by a wonderful world to explore. Whilst it doesn’t necessarily try to re-invent the Metroidvania genre, the way that it delivers every aspect of its design is simply sublime, whether that’s when leaping across the expertly crafted platforming segments or taking on enemies in intense action sequences. The allure of the world design encouraged me to explore every corner of it, whilst the boss battles offer some jaw-dropping sequences that bring each element of the experience together in spectacular fashion. It’s just an amazing game and a wonderful new direction for the Prince of Persia series to take. It’s left me genuinely excited to see what’s next for the series – here’s hoping it won’t be another fourteen years before we get to see it…
