ActionTrip's Reviews

Sep 30, 2015

Even if the controls on the PS4 weren't so terrible and I could have finished the game on the console, the story and puzzles in the rest of The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 still would have brought the game down. If I was reviewing the game on the PC, I would give it a higher rating because the game was playable. It's an absolute shame that I had to finish the game on the PC due to the control difficulties, but maybe it was trying to do me a favor and save me from the rest of it.

The game's one saving grace could be the wealth of content, like items and stuff you can do. That seems irrelevant in a game that has little depth and very few elements that could keep you playing.

4.5 / 10.0 - Sacred 3
Aug 19, 2014

If you're bored out of your mind and you need an RPG fast, well, then stay bored. You don't want to be even more bored. It's probably best to return to games like Diablo 3 and Divinity: Original Sin, both of which offer ten times the content and ten times the fun.

I’m looking forward to Platinum Games returning back to what they do best—creating original games with unique settings and fast character-action with crazy combos to learn. They can certainly make these licensed games look fantastic, but nearly everything else they leave little to desire.

5 / 10.0 - Kyn
Sep 1, 2015

On paper, everything about Kyn looks like it should amazing. Mystically powered Viking super-soldiers? Check. A diverse collection of loot and weapons? Aye. Long campaign, wrought with mayhem and peril? You better believe it. With all of these crucial boxes checked, it would be hard for the game to be bad, right? Sadly, not even these high points can overcome a title that has more bugs than a re-run of Fear Factor.

5.3 / 10.0 - The Evil Within

As a horror experience, The Evil Within completely misfired.

Some players may find the predictable stage design, repetitive art assets and regurgitated waves of the same dozen character models comforting and even entertaining. However, this was the reason that I got away from the mobile platforms to begin with.

5.5 / 10.0 - NBA Live 16
Oct 13, 2015

Much to our chagrin, EA Sports has once again proven that they can't make a quality basketball game. Like the Toronto Raptors, it is hard not to speculate how much more of a beating NBA Live can take before they just throw in the towel permanently. Hopefully the answer to that question is never, but they still have a seemingly insurmountable amount of ground to make up in order to even be competitive.

5.5 / 10.0 - Mighty No. 9
Jun 20, 2016

Look for this to become a cautionary tale for crowdfunded projects from now until the end of time. Sometimes a legacy of success isn't enough to guarantee quantifiable quality in the future. Caveat emptor, friends. This is not the spiritual successor you're looking for.

Is Homefront: The Revolution the worst thing I have ever played? No, in fact it was far from it. However, the fact still remains that the end product is a mediocre interpretation of what could have been, and by all accounts should have been, something far more enjoyable. Compound these failings with an uninspired, borderline laughable narrative and the end product is something that I cannot, in good faith, recommend to anyone. Consider this your warning shot. Retreat while you still can!

5.5 / 10.0 - The Crew
Jan 2, 2015

The Crew is not a bad game but one targeted at a very specific group of gamers. Not quite the pure race and unlock gameplay offered by other car titles and not enough of the usual trappings us twisted MMO fans look for to find a long term home on my hard drive. In short, it's a fun distraction for the short term but unless this is the kind of meal you'd like to eat three times a day for the next twenty five years, you are going to find yourself not quite sated by what The Crew has to offer.

Game of Thrones will give you some pretty cool moments, especially when you start feeling the weight of your decisions. Overall, there's a good chance you'll be disappointed and frustrated with the game, rather than being mesmerized by an epic tale and great characters. You know, great characters really aren't THAT great, unless we have enough time to know them.

6 / 10.0 - Grow Home
Mar 9, 2015

I can appreciate what Ubisoft Reflections was trying to attempt with Grow Home, but perhaps it should have been left as an experiment or a demo instead of as a game. Its appearance is intriguing, I'll give it that, but appearance doesn't make it any less tedious or frustrating. I noticed on Metacritic that several people have loved it, but for me, it was absolute torture.

Instead of capitalizing on it, 343 Industries failed both Halo fans and potential new fans with this collection. As a huge Halo fangirl myself, it absolutely breaks my heart to see Halo tarnished in this fashion. This should have been a solid slam dunk for 343, not an utter disappointment.

Overall, First Light reminded me how much fun it is to spend time in an inFamous game, but I would have preferred a bit more originality with the mini-games and some life in the once vivid game world of Seattle. This standalone prequel is a nice touch for fans of Second Son, but there's absolutely nothing within to entice series newcomers to jump in.

6.2 / 10.0 - POSTAL Redux
May 20, 2016

We understand what Running With Scissors wanted to achieve with this game, but it's fairly obvious they did not quite push themselves to incoporate any features that would make Postal Redux stand out in a highly competitive scene PC indie games.

Once Upon a Climb was short and sweet, with a heavy emphasis upon sweet. Short games aren’t always a bad thing, but Episode 3 leaves you feeling as though something is lacking. Nothing was abrupt or cut off, but it never feels fully fleshed out either. King’s Quest had such a strong start, but the last two episodes have not lived up to the bar set before them, either from Sierra Games or from the first chapter. At least the humor lived up to the King’s Quest seal of quality.

6.5 / 10.0 - Loud on Planet X
Apr 20, 2016

As an independently produced rhythm game, LOUD on Planet X, succeeds at everything it sets out to do. It is an interesting perspective to approach the genre that is complimented by a very strong soundtrack.

So, once again, what Techland offers is Dead Island, Dead Island Riptide, and Retro Revenge in one package for 40 bucks. That still a pretty good offer. But just so you know, for 20 dollars more you can get Dying Light: The Following - Enhanced Edition, which is just a better game.

6.5 / 10.0 - ADR1FT
Mar 30, 2016

The sense of awe only lasts for so long and eventually gives way to the tedium that comes from padding the length of a campaign through relatively repetitive missions and challenges. It is hard to shake the feeling that this could have been something special, at least in concept, that ultimately failed executing on its overall promise. Unless you have a VR headset that you are looking to justify, you may want to skip this rescue mission.
