ActionTrip's Reviews

With so many massive role-playing games or padded action games, it's refreshing to play an old-school point-and-click adventure without the old-school frustration and without the padded content for length. It's short, sweet, to the point, and it helps that it's as fun as it is funny. I'm more than happy to take a break from the AAA scene with a game like this at any time.

8 / 10.0 - Unravel
Feb 8, 2016

Coldwood Interactive has managed to generate a refreshing new take on the puzzle platformer, starring an endearing protagonist that will steal your heart. For those looking to scratch that puzzling itch without having to bite of something as overwhelming as The Witness, this will prove to be a more than adequate salve. As long as you are not a fan of scissors, that is…

8 / 10.0 - Rock Band 4
Oct 15, 2015

The over-arching theme of Rock Band 4 has been fan service. It seems like every aspect of the game from its' backwards compatibility for both instruments and DLC, to its playable music platform approach, ultimately has every Harmonix fan at heart. This culminates in a very welcome return to form for the series, and a very worthy first entry to the new console generation.

8 / 10.0 - Broforce
Nov 6, 2015

If you are looking for a bit more dudebro dipshittery in your life, then look no further. Broforce is a heaping helping of nostalgic happiness in concentrated game form. Aside from a rather repetitive set of mission goals and overly complicated level designer, this is the kind of game that is worth sitting down with four friends in the living room and having at it. This is a perfect reminder of what makes couch play coop so much fun. So party up and buckle in, because this is a ride down memory lane that is sure to have some amusing collateral damage.

Each path takes about 30-45 minutes to complete (depending upon how powerful Reynardo has become), which makes it all too easy to fall into the trap of trying one more path before closing up the game for the night. Even if you do play the game extremely efficiently to get to the end, you'll still absolutely get your $15 worth of the game.

Everything looks and plays spectacularly in Halo 5: Guardians, and it was so close to having the complete package for a first-person shooter. Unfortunately, the hype oversold and underdelivered when it came to story, and the non-shooting missions should have been scrapped until the team figured out a more creative way to entice player exploration in the middle of a shooter. All that said though, Halo 5: Guardians is an absolute blast to play, which, when all is said and done, is the most important facet of any video game.

8 / 10.0 - Madden NFL 15
Aug 21, 2014

If it's been awhile since you picked up a Madden game, you might want to give Madden 15 a look. It's definitely grown beyond what most people think of Madden NFL games.

In almost every way Disney Infinity 2.0 earns its sequel badge as it has improved on the original. Disney Infinity 2.0 has improved on level building with in game helps, templates and automation (optional) the ability to download other player's creations, added RPG elements with the ability to level your characters and make them more powerful (including characters from the original game) and added a couple of new gameplay types (which I hope to see more of in the future). While some gamers might dismiss it as a kids title or choose to give it a pass because of the collectible figurine aspect are missing the point. Sandbox games are popular with gamers because of the fun players get to experience due to the freedom they allow. Infinity offers the same sort of freedom of play but does so with a cast of characters that are well loved and instantly recognizable to fans of all ages. The cost for the upgrades might seem as a barrier to entry, which was off putting for me at first but the amount of enjoyment my whole family gets out of the Infinity series has completely erased that concern. Plus who wouldn't want to control and play with the stable of Disney characters? Things will really get interesting when the Star Wars sets hit the market as I am pretty sure the tag team of ObiWan and Stitch will be a force not even the Avengers could compete with.

Skylanders Trap Team may break the bank a little, but it's still a great game for kids, little and big alike. Just don't let the bright colors, sappy dialogue, and kid-friendly fighting fool you; it's only as easy as you want it to be, and sometimes, it's fun to sit back and play a light-hearted game, even if it is one made for kids.

If they tried to give us something fresh and if it weren't for such a ruthlessly steep learning curve in the game's competitive multiplayer, I'd actually see this as Game of the Year material. Disregarding these drawbacks, Treyarch's shooter is still a product that offers quite a lot for the standard price tag. It's a solid and well-polished shooter.

8.2 / 10.0 - Goat Simulator
Apr 3, 2014

No, Goat Simulator won't be game of the year by any stretch of imagination. However, those who want a stupid little game that rewards you for destroying things but won't kill you, even if you head-butt a tanker truck, leap out a fourth-story window, or let a treadmill backspin you out into traffic, will not be let down by the simplicity the game has to offer. Just be prepared for buggy controls, a twitchy camera, and plenty of physics that don't make sense (but you won't care because it's a friggin' goat).

If you're looking for a Wolfenstein experience that has stark differences from The New Order, you're going to be heavily disappointed. But just look at the cover art that both Bethesda and Machine Games have designed for The Old Blood and you'll see exactly what you should expect.

Even if the game did not quite meet my personal expectations as an adventure game, that doesn't mean you won't have a good time. If nothing else, the awesome humor, interesting characters and the always welcomed insanity of Borderlands will surely hold your attention.

Nonetheless, the slick design and solid gameplay really makes the game enjoyable both as a lovely 2D adventure and a turn-based strategy. As far as storytelling goes, The Banner Saga 2 provides an amazing and unpredictable ride that hinges on decision-making that can often drive you insane.

8.4 / 10.0 - SUPERHOT

What the Superhot Team strived to bring us is something different and by almost all accounts they succeeded. This shooter feels unlike anything I've played before and I do wish more games will follow in this example.

8.4 / 10.0 - Quantum Break
Apr 1, 2016

Remedy has, without a doubt, crafted a very creative title with Quantum Break. It's not going to be the killer exclusive game that so many were looking for with the Xbox One, but it's definitely been worth the wait. Story gamers will especially delight in replaying the game multiple times to see the various episodes and experience the different paths the game itself can take. For anyone with an Xbox One, Quantum Break is a must-own.

The appeal lies in the game's simplicity as much as it lies in its alluring wackiness, crazy characters and superb atmosphere. What I often enjoy in Borderlands games is the narrative, which tends to mock itself in so many deliciously unique ways. With entertaining story-driven missions and will all the available content, I think it's safe to say that Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is a pretty safe buy. The next addition to the series, however, definitely needs to move things forward. Yep, we would be very sad if the franchise would just end here.
