3 / 5.0 - Sea of Thieves
Mar 21, 2018

Sea of Thieves is a “make your own fun” game, but it’s difficult not to feel like the developers could’ve made a little more fun for you. Sail, stare at the water, and live the life of a corsair — ultimately, its longevity will come down to you and your crew.

As another piece of the Final Fantasy XV world, I enjoyed my time with Monster of the Deep.

If you’re not a huge fan of Fire Emblem, you may want to sit this one out. Fire Emblem Warriors is largely a vehicle for fanservice to those in love with the nearly 30-year-old strategy RPG series. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

As an overall package, there’s a surprising amount to love about Battlefront II. Starfighter Assault aside, its individual modes are arguably not strong enough to carry their own games, but the variety on offer here does feel fairly generous. Yet, despite being chock-full of some brilliant Star Wars moments, it’s EA’s instance on putting profit over the player that leaves such a sour taste in our mouths.

3 / 5.0 - Far Cry 5
Mar 26, 2018

More future primitive than highly evolved, there is some fun to be had here, but ultimately it’s a game that adds nothing of substance to either genre or franchise.

Simple updates – like the ability to use Joy-Con controls in handheld mode, or more new additions besides re-skinned areas – could have easily made this the definitive version of the game. But as it stands, Final Remix feels like a bit of a missed opportunity.

Starlink is a simple game, but that’s not necessarily bad.

Despite being available to buy as a separate stand-alone experience and packing content that could easily fill an entirely new RPG, Xenoblade’s idiosyncrasies make The Golden Country an experience you’re only going get the most out of if you’ve already played the base game.

3.5 / 5.0 - Super Mario Party
Oct 5, 2018

Play it with friends, play it with family, don’t take it too seriously and for the love of God don’t play it alone. Stick with that ruleset, and Super Mario Party might just be the party game you’ve been waiting.

3.5 / 5.0 - Vampyr
Jun 4, 2018

Despite the strikingly different premise from Life is Strange studio Dontnod, the team’s expertise in characterisation and world-building dovetail neatly into this vampire romp.

Essentially, Black Ops 4 a Frankenstein Monster of a FPS experience. That’s fine. It’s also a little bit sad. Time will tell if the package peels further back to reveal more of its own soul.

3.5 / 5.0 - Mario Tennis Aces
Jun 20, 2018

It’s beautiful, it’s polished, and it will likely be a smash hit for anyone who’s been waiting all these years for a complex and challenging Mario tennis game.

It’s not a bad game, but the mileage you’re going to get out of it will vary depending on the type of player you are.

If you can endure the game’s more tedious aspects and embrace the bad with the good, Detroit’s branching endings will undoubtedly compel you to dive into countless chapter replays and spark heated conversations for years to come.

3.5 / 5.0 - Darksiders III

If you can look past its woes, there’s a lot to love here — but be prepared for this to be an incredibly frustrating delight.

Dissidia is undeniably attractive and enjoyable to play. However, the steep learning curve and amount of time needed to master makes it a fighter that’s not for the faint of heart.

In the end, Comrades feels like the missing puzzle piece of Final Fantasy XV. Not only does it plug a narrative hole, it does so with coherency and commitment to its end-of-the-world bit. Yes, the multiplayer itself is over simplistic and you can actually play the expansion without interacting with others — but then you’re missing the point of story Comrades is trying to tell.

When it comes to actually playing the game, Yakuza 6 is a bit more bland, a bit sparser with content, and frankly a bit dated with its problematic choices.

3.5 / 5.0 - Call of Duty: WWII
Nov 10, 2017

Call of Duty WWII plays like high production values were applied to a WWII game checklist. It’s a short blockbuster campaign going through the motions. Maybe that’s all you want.

3.5 / 5.0 - The Evil Within 2
Oct 17, 2017

Atmospheric, psychological horror requires new things to think about. Things for the player to ruminate on after turning the game off. Things that stay with you. The Evil Within 2 almost gets there.
