Worms WMD pays homage to its roots and the addition of crafting, buildings and vehicles add a few interesting twists to this classic. Worms is all about multiplayer and the lack of online play with friends is a real shame though getting pals together for a local match is as fun as its ever been and the best worms in a very long time.
If you love a brutal challenge and don't mind dying over and over again then this will be the game for you. If you don't find that fun then stay well clear. There are no difficulty settings here, it is what it is so you either live with that or you don't. It's a shame the developers didn't include a casual setting to at least make the game a little more accessible to people. I am fine with a brutal challenge like this but many will just give up and won't sink the required hours in which is a shame as there is lot's to see. A stunning visual style accompanied by a great metal soundtrack and gameplay which feels satisfying when mastered make for a really nice little package.
In conclusion, Shu is an earnest little platformer that tries its best to mimic the big boys and almost does so with it’s very solid gameplay and ability switching mechanics. It’s only a brief experience with not too much incentive to go back but at least it doesn’t outstay its welcome. It’s got solid presentation too and stands above other rivals at the same price point or higher. It’s not a game I will remember for years to come or anything, but it was a pleasant experience I’m happy to have had and, aside from a couple of frustrating parts, I’m sure you will too.
Overall, Her Majesty’s SPIFFING is a pretty harmless game. It’s a simple way to spend a couple of hours if you want to sit back with a coffee and maybe have a few chuckles at the ridiculousness of it all. Even if it’s playing hugely on British stereotypes it’s very inoffensive. If you’re not into the genre then you’ll probably find the slow-paced nature of puzzle solving a bit of a bore, but adventure fans will lap this up I’m sure, especially if you’re British. It’s a shame it’s not a little longer and it will be a while before we get to see the second and third episodes in the series but you can’t expect so much from such a small developer and I find it impressive they pulled off such a well-presented package to rival other, bigger publishers.
If you are after a mobile game style farming simulator without cooldowns or microtransactions, then Plantera will definitely fill that role perfectly. It is such a relaxing game overall, with beautiful art direction and sound design that will bring a smile to your face. It is not a game you can really play for hours and is by no means a spectacular game, but it achieves what it sets out to do and is an absolute joy because of it.
Serial Cleaner is a fun, stylish and polished puzzle game which will force you to be observant in order to evade the cops and get enough cleaned up from each crime scene to advance. The music is top notch and is easy to just listen to. This is great to have as your will be replaying each mission several times to complete all of the challenges, and the excellent tunes makes it more of a pleasure to do so. There is a lot of replay value if you don't mind playing on the same stages repeatedly with various challenge settings, but the lack of leaderboard reduces the incentive to do so. If you enjoy jazz music, satirical humor in small doses, stylish visuals, vacuuming up blood and cleverly evading cops, then this is the game for you. I give it a 7.5/10.
In conclusion, if you’re into point and click adventure games like Thimbleweed Park, TV shows like Twin Peaks or Stranger Things, film noir and slightly whacky humour, then there’s no doubt in my mind that The Darkside Detective is perfect for you. With its mini episodic style structure, it’s a good fit for the Switch and the excellent soundtrack from Ben Prunty make it an easy recommendation. Whether it’s as funny as other games it’s trying to emulate, I’m not so sure, and maybe the gameplay is a little too simple, but it’s still enjoyable and nothing falls flat.
Aces of the Luftwaffe is a solid Shoot Em Up and plays out particularly well in multiplayer or when playing solo on the move. For a first Nintendo Switch game, Handy Games have done a fantastic job in producing a game without many technical hick-ups, as a result, if you are in the market for this type of game you can't go far wrong here.
We love our Shoot em ups here at Switchwatch and this one is a welcome addition to the Switch library and one I have no hesitation in recommending. There is a decent story, great audio and decent visuals all in a package with fun gameplay either on your own or with a friend.I like the switching screens mechanic even though it took some getting used too as it adds something different to the genre. You may prefer a single screen experience but until you try this you will not know for sure so bare that in mind. While the game does have a few flaws none of them detracted too much from what is overall a solid package.
I had a blast with Bleed and out of all the indies I have played on Switch, it’s one that I enjoyed immensely. It’s fast and the action never stops. Tight controls, great set pieces, varied enemies and bosses are brilliant but it’s the uniqueness of the control scheme and how good it feels to play that’s the real standout. Throw in the ultra-smooth performance and this is one everyone should consider at some point. It’s just a shame it wasn’t priced a little more competitively.
Take this game for what it is, an addictive twin-stick shooter which will ram more and more enemies down your throat until you learn to survive. For me, there is nothing more fun than blasting hordes of enemy creatures away with varying perks and weapons. It's by no means perfect but I will take a game like this most days of the week on my Switch for a bit of mindless action where the campaign is satisfying and the survival mode with online leaderboards is enough to keep me coming back over and over again. Everybody needs a game like this on their Switch and in their lives!
This is a horror game that uses what you can't see to build tension. It expertly builds an atmosphere through its wonderful use of sound and visuals with the paintings themselves being a real star of the show. While the gameplay leaves a little to be desired in that there could have been more for the player to do, by design, this is a walking simulator for you to experience a very good horror story which will keep you glued until the credits roll. If you are a horror fan and want something a little different then this is a worthwhile game experience to add to your collection but if your searching for more involving gameplay or scare easy then best to look elsewhere.
Overall, Atelier Lydie & Suelle is a very niche game that fans of the series will no doubt enjoy. I’m sure if you give it time and are willing to fork over the hefty price tag, newcomers will find some quaint enjoyment in it too. It’s ambitious for its budget which I appreciate, even if it doesn’t come out looking the best. Aside from that and the poor frame rate, the production is great with music and direction. The story is what you will be here for and if you’re into the cutesy anime style of the dialogue then you’ll definitely be in for a warm, delightful, fuzzy time as you go with the sisters on their journey to be the best in the Kingdom. I definitely did.
Overall, Penny-Punching Princess is a quirky Switch game from a reliable publisher. Sometimes you can get games of pure genius, sometimes you’ll get a solid effort. Sadly Penny-Punching Princess is more towards the latter but that is not to say it’s not an enjoyable game, because it is. I think the price will do it an injustice though as I do think it’s too expensive for what it is and will put off a lot of potential customers who are on the fence. It’s mindless action that holds on to the money concept for dear life and it works well, if a little clunky at times, and the brawling isn’t particularly as deep as it could have been. It’s still an enjoyable romp though for those wanting a bit of chaotic action with a twist.
Manticore Galaxy on Fire is a rather solid entry into the Sci Fi space shooter genre on the Switch. Everything is solid enough and there is something for everyone, dog fights, boss battles and some calm exploration parts. For me it was missing that extra magic to make it truly essential. The sound is good, the visuals are nice and the story is ok but rather uninspiring with characters needing more development. Put it all together and you get just that, a solid game which is probably just about worth your hard earned cash if you’re into these types of games and one that if you are I am sure you will enjoy.
Overall, I enjoyed my time with Steamworld Dig. It isn't the best indie game I have played and it certainly doesn't stand up to its successor. However, it is a fun little game which will appeal to fans of the old West genre, it's open-ended exploration makes it enjoyable to wander around in, and it's randomly generated levels will provide players who wish to play it multiple times a varied experience each play through. The game suffers through its flaws by having an uninspired combat system and from a slow and boring start, but it comes together well after you start unlocking Rusty's abilities and the fast travel pods. In the end, I will give it a respectable 7/10.
Sparkle Unleashed is a decent puzzle game that works well as a casual time waster. The controls are tight, but the touch controls are clearly superior, making this a title you will want to play in handheld mode. The music, though well crafted, becomes repetitive due to a lack of tracks to pull from. The large amount of puzzles gives you a lot to play with, so fans of these types of games will more than get their money's worth.
While this isn't a game that sets any new standards, it feels like a marked improvement over its predecessor, Tennis in the Face. With improved stage layouts, new collectable stars simplified yet more challenging gameplay and clearer goals, Baseball Riot is a satisfying follow-up. However, the art style, animations and sound effects have all been basically copied and pasted from the first game. If you played that game, then you will know almost exactly to expect in those regards. Much like with TITF, this game will appeal to people just looking for a small smartphone-type of game to pick up and play occasionally. It doesn't take long to beat the stages with the basic requirements, but if you are the type of player who tries to get the best rating possible on each stage, then there will be plenty for you here. While I felt like this game was an improvement over the original in terms of its gameplay, none of its other features were improved enough to affect the overall score. I'm going to give it the same rating with a very solid 7/10
