I’m not much for tactics games, I dabbled in Warcraft 3 over a decade ago, but since then I never found myself engaged with games like Civilization or any of the Total War franchise. I let you know this so if you too are coming to Total War: Three Kingdoms without an iota of experience you can determine if this is a game for you. There is a lot to take in with the game, but will the tyranny of Dong Zhou bring you to your knees, or will you rise up to become Emperor of China? Read on in this (not-so) Rapid Review to find out.

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. A saying which sums up exactly how, and why, this game has stayed so very true to its source material. Initially released for the arcades in 1987 under the title of “The Ninja Warriors”, the game was quickly ported to home consoles to capitalise on its success. In 1994 there was a sequel (or remake depending on how you look at it) created for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System under the same name. It would then be an agonising 25 years until the next time these ninjas would grace our screens; however, the wait was definitely worth it.

The local co-op revolution received quite the shot in the arm when Nintendo released the Switch two and a half years ago. The fact that every system came with two controllers made it the perfect place for local co-op games. Now, with the release of Heave Ho, we add another one to the long list of couch co-op games of the last few years. But does this one stand out from the pack, or does it get lost in the shuffle? Read on in this Rapid Review to find out.

Based in Madrid, Team Gotham are a team of five who have, since 2014, developed four games. Two of these are available free via GameJolt: no ONE and Fidelio, another can be found on Steam under the name, The Guest, and the latest title, SOLO: Islands of the Heart, is now made a home on the Nintendo Switch. With home consoles being a goal of theirs, Solo represents a significant moment for the team, and we were keen to see how it fared.

The massively popular Xbox exclusive series Gears of War has finally returned, with this latest entry into the franchise being simply titled “Gears 5”. As a fan since the first game, this shortened title is one that speaks to me. It tells me I already know what this game is about, what I should expect and yet the game still managed to blow me away as it does so much more than what fans have come to expect from these games.

Iceborne, the newest expansion to 2018’s Monster Hunter World builds upon the series in classic fashion, much like previous western releases in the series have. The games often released in Japan and then released in the west a year later with additional content. That is also where the expansions biggest barrier lies: You must complete the main story of Monster Hunter World to engage with Iceborne. The expansion is more difficult, introducing the master rank hunts, with more difficult monsters that will require you to put your skills to the test to overcome each new challenge.

AI: The Somnium Files ended up being one of my favourite games of the year so far, so if it sounds up your street then I would suggest you give it a try. It’s also pretty good value, as I went through the game at a reasonable clip and it still took almost 24 hours to get to the true ending.

It’s easy to see why this game has garnered the fandom that it has. From memes to coffee shops all over the place putting up “No Geese” signs (mimicking an act done in the game), this game is beyond popular. This game has even gone as far as to beat the new Link’s Awakening off the top spot of the digital charts in the USA! It’s a true underdog story, and all the success is truly deserved. Pick this game up, and you will not regret it, and remember, press Y to honk!

If you have stuck with me this far into the review, I think it goes without saying that this is one of my favourite series ever, and I could not recommend it enough. If you are scrolling through to see my final thoughts, this collection is near perfect, and if you are a horror fan, then you need to have it on your system.

Being in charge of a virtual city (and, I imagine, a real city) can be stressful, but rewarding. Take Cities: Skylines for example; there’s the pressure of keeping people happy, but the fun of constructing your own city and seeing it thrive. Now, add being situated in a frozen wasteland where people need warmth and food to survive. The pressure is significantly heightened, and this is what Frostpunk is all about.

I’m still glad that Game Freak took another turn and attempted to try something new, which is fun, but hard to get into and is not for everybody. I hope you enjoyed the review and I left an impression about what Little Town Hero is. I certainly was challenged a lot with that game – as a reviewer and a gamer.

With the next Olympics taking place in Tokyo in the Summer of 2020, there will be plenty of games coming out, hoping to make a quick buck on the back of it. This is what usually happens when a big sporting event takes place. These games are sometimes rushed, and not completed to a good standard. However, with the might of SEGA and Nintendo behind it, would Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 fall into this category? Read my Rapid Review to find out.

The game serves as a genre that stands alone. Horror-Comedy-Platform-Puzzler just about does it justice. The developer does a truly wonderful job of establishing a learning curve that will attract players of all ages, albeit the puzzles may be a little challenging for a younger audience. There is a local Co-Op available for a 2nd player to assume the role of Gooigi. After all two brains are better than one, and my eight-year-old son absolutely loved it!

Frontier has also been great at communicating with their audience, letting us know when updates are available and what they’re for, as well as when franchise mode is down for maintenance. They’ve really created something special here, and I couldn’t be happier with how Planet Zoo has turned out!

This has been one of the most refreshing and genuinely enjoyable gaming experiences of my year and a massive highlight. My hope for the future is we a get a sequel to this glorious gem, and that it will be twice as long, that was the only downside for me. It was over too soon! If you’re looking for a platformer to keep you entertained for 6-7 hours, then you really can’t go wrong with New Super Lucky’s Tale. A must-have for your Switch library!

EA has made the headlines a lot this year, but when it comes to their sports games, they know their stuff, and NHL20 is a prime example of a fun game that sports fans can sink their teeth into. Just don’t expect anything groundbreaking.
