Omen Exitio: Plague offers a surprisingly enthralling narrative with a choice mechanic that feels rewarding for making good choices. It offers a solid EXP system that rewards you often for making smart choices. Overall, this is a solid experience, even if the story and visuals can drag out at times and some side mechanics might seem pointless. At its core, Omen Exitio is an interactive story and a good one at that.
In the end there was not much satisfaction from beating Heave Ho by myself. There’s no denying that the game is much better when playing with friends. I still cannot shake the feeling that more modes could have been provided to give Heave Ho more playtime and more replay value. The use of physics, motion and momentum were done rather well, especially when considering such infamously frustrating Internet games like QWOP and Getting Over It. Personally, I will stick to Super Mario Party for a party game or even Super Smash Bros Ultimate, but I can see others that actually have more friends within their area enjoying this title.
River City Girls is one of the best experiences I’ve had with a beat em up and if it has more time to iron out a few kinks, I think it could be one of the best the genre has to offer. The gameplay excels at being entertaining no matter whether you’re playing alone, or with a friend. There’s a significant amount of different moves to test out, along with a simply stunning visual design. It’s a shame that the RPG mechanics couldn’t have been better implemented. Having a feeling of meaningful progression and knowing the difference in damage output between different moves would have been really nice. If you’re a fan of beat em up’s you’re most likely going to enjoy your time with River City Girls. These two girls definitely pack a punch.
AER: Memories of Old, is a fun little three hour experience. It provides solid gameplay with an in depth lore for those who are devoted enough to attempt to comprehend it. While on the outside it looks like just another exploration simulator, it sets itself apart with a unique world and a unique way to travel through it. It has something for any kind of player, which is what makes it so appealing and worth your time.
Overall, I enjoyed my time with Boreal Blade. It’s an interesting fighting game that ends up being a ton of fun. The cell shaded visual design work really well with its overall presentation, and the soundtrack keeps you focused with the beating of drums and screams of helpless victims. I wish there had of been a single player mode and a few more customization options at the very beginning of the game, but still there’s tons to unlock and enjoy here. The controls can take a little while to get used to, but it’s still a unique fighting experience on the Nintendo Switch and one that I think is a solid investment for fighting game fans. It has a few issues, but it’s definitely still worth a try.
Overall I enjoyed my time with Beholder 2. The story and sometimes gruesome settings showed the reality of an all-knowing and all-powerful totalitarian government. The emphasis on choice and sheer number of quests made me weigh all my options on how I wanted my story to unravel. Aside for some occasional annoyances in grinding for cash, I would recommend it to anyone looking for a deep and somber narrative that’s combined with thoughtful gameplay mechanics.
Headliner is a nice change up from the conventional visual novel style game. It has a deep and immersive story, decisions that matter, and a nice level of replay value. The game will most likely only take 1-2 hours, per playthrough, but as long as you enjoy replaying the story then that shouldn’t be an issue. I would definitely recommend checking Headliner out.
Battle Supremacy: Ground Assault is a great tank combat simulator. There’s a lot to sink your teeth into here. Between the extensive single player options, online multiplayer, and the wide variety of tank customization, it’s unlikely you’ll get bored with this game. It has a few issues, but nothing that holds the game back from being enjoyable. If you’re interested in creating your own tanks and using them to take down your enemies, then Battle Supremacy: Ground Assault is definitely worth picking up.
Inferno 2 was a pleasurable vivacious ecstasy-like trip. I beat it in two sittings making it on the shorter side, but for only $4.99 the value is more than favorable in my opinion. If you got a bunch of gold coins saved up and not much time to jump into all those long time consuming titles coming to Switch, then pick up Inferno 2 for a few minutes to shut your brain off and let some of your senses and mind get lost!
After all these years, finally having the chance to play and finish Castle Crashers has left me with a feeling of satisfaction. This truly stands out as a video game classic and is a ton of fun whether you’re alone or with a group of friends. The combat system is very satisfying and there’s so much content wrapped up in this package. Unfortunately, there are some flaws that hold the game back from living up to its countless praise. Inconsistent difficulty spikes, visual glitches, and unbalanced projectiles hurt Castle Crashers gameplay. As a first-time player, I feel like Castle Crashers is a great game, but it’s not for everyone. You have to put up with some issues, but if you’re able to then this title is worth your time. Either way I’m happy to have this available on Nintendo Switch.
There’s no denying that Invisigun Reloaded has a ton of content to offer players. Completing the campaign for all 12 characters will take a fair amount of time and there’s tons of different options to customize matches to play with friends or bots. On top of all that you can take your new found skills online and play with people all around the world. The only issue I can see with Invisgun is that some people may get tired of Hero’s Journey’s puzzle like nature. It’s fun at first, but eventually it does start to get repetitive as Invisigun is better as a multiplayer experience. Overall, Invisigun Reloaded is a unique stealth shooter, that will test your limits with its challenging mechanics and rewarding gameplay.
Torchlight II still continues to be one of the best the dungeon crawling, Action RPG genre has to offer. The gameplay is solid and full of different quests to always keep you busy. With the 4 classes being so different from one another and NG+ there’s so much replay value here. Online multiplayer is a great addition, if you have some friends to play with and want to team up for some dungeon crawling action. Some of the dungeon designs could have used a bit more creativity and the story feels unimportant, but those are small blemishes on an otherwise great package.
Gun Gun Pixies is really not a great game. Both the game’s platforming and shooting mechanics have flaws especially the platforming which is clunky and only further ruined by the constant camera issues. The story could have been the game’s redeeming quality, but unfortunately, it ended up being bogged down by so much boring dialogue. The fanservice is pretty good here for those who enjoy that, and there’s a nice amount of “costumes” to customize your pixies with. If you’re looking for a new Compile Hearts game to enjoy I suggest waiting for Mary Skelter 2.
Untitled Goose Game lives up to the charm and entertainment value that many were expecting from it. The sandbox style gameplay is a joy to play around with and the inclusion of stealth along with the well-crafted physics work only to further benefit the game. The To-do list task are all equally hilarious because they feel authentic and are genuinely satisfying to complete (the feeling of crossing items off a list never gets old). Some may find the game to be a bit short on content and if you’re not a fan of game’s that center around “goofing off” then Untitled Goose Game may not be for you. I recommend checking the game out for anyone that’s on the fence because you may be missing out on one of the most unique experiences of 2019.
Overland is a fun and challenging strategy game. Although the procedural generation can at some points be unfair, I mostly enjoyed the challenge of stepping into a new area full of creepy creatures. The lack of story and clunky controls did hurt the overall experience, but the inclusion of achievements, time limits and the option to restart a level were nice additions to add even more challenge or take some away. It’s not for everyone, but Overland appeals to a group of players that are looking for a real challenge.
I’m sure this statement’s getting old by now, but here it goes anyways. Jet Kave Adventure doesn’t reinvent the wheel (ha!), but that’s fine because it doesn’t have to. The jetpack is implemented perfectly with the gameplay and with the diverse amount of mechanics used to break up the platforming sections the game never feels stale. The platforming feels similar to how many other 2.5D plaformers play because it has tight, responsive controls that are easy to pick up and learn. There’s an unfortunate lack of difficulty if you’re just trying to complete the game’s 36 levels and the characters don’t live up to the fantastic cast of others in the genre. With all that being said if you want a new platformer to take on the go, Jet Kave Adventure is a great choice
I understand some players are getting tired of ports, but Sniper Elite 3 Ultimate Edition is a truly fantastic addition to the Nintendo Switch library. For a console lacking third-person shooters, this is a truly entertaining game with hours of content. The sniping mechanics are some of the most interesting found in any game I’ve played. Getting into close-quarters combat is a bit boring and along with various glitches does damper Sniper Elite 3 overall. Luckily, these issues don’t hold it back from being an enjoyable stealth-based third-person shooter. Now get out there and go blast some bullets into Nazi skulls, that’s an order!
Candleman was a really enjoyable journey to take part in. It still amazes me just how many ideas they were able to branch off the initial basic concept of the ten-second timer and lighting up candles. The game is longer than I expected it to be, but it never overstayed its welcome. It would introduce a location and gimmick, teach you how to use it and test you on it, then move on before ever becoming tedious. Couple that with a nice narrative (with a fantastic ending that made me audibly “aww”) that keeps the player wanting to find out what comes next on the little candle’s journey makes for a solid experience. It feels perfect for the pick-up and go style of the switch with its relatively short level design and easy to understand gameplay. This is a great puzzle platformer to pick up for your switch’s library!
Ultimately, Zenith is one of the most disappointing games I have ever played. I had high hopes for this one. The amount of issues this game has is mind-blowing, especially with how promising it looked. Despite this game being released originally in 2016 it looks and plays like it belongs on the PS1. The creators put a lot of love and detail into the plot, but far too little attention to any other area of the game.
Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is easily the best platformer I have ever played. With a character that feels great to move, level designs that look and play amazingly, an entire overworld that offers just as much fun as the main levels do and great characters and writing it’s impossible not to love this game. And of course the game’s claim to fame the Impossible Lair is refreshing and an actual challenge to complete unlike most other games these days which try to appeal to all audiences by making their games incredibly easy. Yooka-Laylee no longer represents the 3D collectathons of the late ’90s, but rather the unapologetic 2/2.5D Platformers akin to the Donkey Kong Country series while still being and feeling like its own series. Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair has paved the way for so much for Playtonic and I can’t wait to see what they put out next!
