Ultimately, Zenith is one of the most disappointing games I have ever played. I had high hopes for this one. The amount of issues this game has is mind-blowing, especially with how promising it looked. Despite this game being released originally in 2016 it looks and plays like it belongs on the PS1. The creators put a lot of love and detail into the plot, but far too little attention to any other area of the game.
As much as the creators want to label the game as a hack n slash game it is not. It’s more of a wave survival type game. Grave Keeper is not a terrible game it is just wildly overpriced considering it is free on Android.
There’s a fair amount of content to go through here, and there’s sparks of enjoyment scattered throughout the game. Most of the time, however, I was left frustrated and disappointed by the game’s rough combat, mediocre platforming, and lackluster presentation.
Gun Gun Pixies is really not a great game. Both the game’s platforming and shooting mechanics have flaws especially the platforming which is clunky and only further ruined by the constant camera issues. The story could have been the game’s redeeming quality, but unfortunately, it ended up being bogged down by so much boring dialogue. The fanservice is pretty good here for those who enjoy that, and there’s a nice amount of “costumes” to customize your pixies with. If you’re looking for a new Compile Hearts game to enjoy I suggest waiting for Mary Skelter 2.
Solo: Islands of the Heart sets out to be a provocative journey about love. While it does do a fairly good job at making players really think and boast a beautiful visual design, the gameplay is executed in a mediocre fashion.
If you’re in need of some Star Wars action then Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast will do the job but don’t expect much from it. Previous fans of the game may be able to overlook the outdated gameplay and countless technical issues, but newer players will most likely have a hard time feeling enthralled with this game. For now, it feels like the release of a great Star Wars game to take on the go is in a galaxy far far away.
A Knight’s Quest is still an enjoyable adventure, but the bland magic and item system along with the abundance of technical issues makes me hesitant to recommend the game. I found the game’s core gameplay of combat, platforming, and puzzle-solving to be quite well done and the inclusion of the interesting grinding mechanic still makes A Knight’s Quest worth trying out. The story’s humor is mostly enjoyable, but at times comes across like the game’s trying too hard. If you can look past these issues and focus on the core gameplay you’ll most likely find some enjoyment with this title, but don’t go in expecting a perfect adventure.
From a presentation’s standpoint, Neon Drive checks all the right boxes. The neon visual design is absolutely gorgeous and is accompanied by a stellar soundtrack. Sadly, the core gameplay is frustrating and isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Neon Drive is certainly an example of style over substance.
Newt one has an interesting gameplay premise, regretfully that's all it ends up becoming. You're sure to entertain yourself for a while with the neat power-ups and collection of achievements to unlock. However, the game gets to be a bit too repetitive and the controls are a bit too loose to get full enjoyment from. Newt One's a great game if you want something relaxing and colorful, but it won't satisfy all fans of the platformer genre.
Overland is a fun and challenging strategy game. Although the procedural generation can at some points be unfair, I mostly enjoyed the challenge of stepping into a new area full of creepy creatures. The lack of story and clunky controls did hurt the overall experience, but the inclusion of achievements, time limits and the option to restart a level were nice additions to add even more challenge or take some away. It’s not for everyone, but Overland appeals to a group of players that are looking for a real challenge.
Cryogear is in no way a bad game. For fans of the Metroidvania genre this is worth picking up as it is an enjoyable game. However, for those trying to pick out and find a few Metroidvanias that really stand out I don't know if this will be one of them. You can definitely spend upwards of 8-12 hours with Cryogear, if you want to complete everything, which may be enticing for some. However, the combat's a bit bland, there's not much of a story, and the visual and audio design need some work. I think Cryogear is a good fit on the Switch it just needed more time in development to give it some more personality.
Whipseey and The Lost Atlas is a decent title, for a short trip if you’re looking for a cheap platformer. Sadly, I felt the game never evolved into something special. I see a lot of untapped potential here and the makings of a game that could have been great.
In the end there was not much satisfaction from beating Heave Ho by myself. There’s no denying that the game is much better when playing with friends. I still cannot shake the feeling that more modes could have been provided to give Heave Ho more playtime and more replay value. The use of physics, motion and momentum were done rather well, especially when considering such infamously frustrating Internet games like QWOP and Getting Over It. Personally, I will stick to Super Mario Party for a party game or even Super Smash Bros Ultimate, but I can see others that actually have more friends within their area enjoying this title.
Overall, Church in the Darkness is an ambitious product and while I understand what they were trying to accomplish, I feel they are just slightly off the mark. It’s a fun game, and one I still find myself going back to, but purely in the interest of seeing what endings there are, rather than being pulled in by the story. It just wasn’t everything that I was expecting.
I had a blast playing through Redeemer, but I can’t cover up its underlying issues. It’s frantic action is fun for awhile, but it can grow tiresome over time. The visual glitches and animation issues, along with the significant frame rate issues really takes down Redeemer’s quality of gameplay with a hard charged-punch. For those who are craving an action-packed journey of redemption you might be able to look past these issues. However, in its current state it might not be for all fans of the action genre.
I believe that fans of the series will absolutely love having this reboot in their collection. However, I was not really a fan of how the ninjas walk in a single straight path. Some of the enemies, specifically bosses and the front armored robot, are incredibly obnoxious considering how the ninjas are able to move. Do not get me wrong though, it is amazing that the series has been revived and looks and sounds spectacular. The price point is fair but definitely, a must get if ever on sale. You can also get this physically and looks to be a beauty to have in your collection. Overall this a worthwhile buy for those who are established fans of the beat em up genre.
Overall the gameplay is enjoyable and as frightening as always, although the visuals are starting to become a bit dated. With Justine being much shorter then the others I feel the asking price for the Amnesia Collection is a bit too high. The first and third game are really enjoyable and if the collection goes on sale I would definitely recommend picking it up then.
I’m sure this statement’s getting old by now, but here it goes anyways. Jet Kave Adventure doesn’t reinvent the wheel (ha!), but that’s fine because it doesn’t have to. The jetpack is implemented perfectly with the gameplay and with the diverse amount of mechanics used to break up the platforming sections the game never feels stale. The platforming feels similar to how many other 2.5D plaformers play because it has tight, responsive controls that are easy to pick up and learn. There’s an unfortunate lack of difficulty if you’re just trying to complete the game’s 36 levels and the characters don’t live up to the fantastic cast of others in the genre. With all that being said if you want a new platformer to take on the go, Jet Kave Adventure is a great choice
Overall, I enjoyed my time with Boreal Blade. It’s an interesting fighting game that ends up being a ton of fun. The cell shaded visual design work really well with its overall presentation, and the soundtrack keeps you focused with the beating of drums and screams of helpless victims. I wish there had of been a single player mode and a few more customization options at the very beginning of the game, but still there’s tons to unlock and enjoy here. The controls can take a little while to get used to, but it’s still a unique fighting experience on the Nintendo Switch and one that I think is a solid investment for fighting game fans. It has a few issues, but it’s definitely still worth a try.
I found Quench to be a rather charming adventure that will let you appreciate the delicate balance of nature and the beauty of life in the wild.
