Nobunaga's Ambition: Awakening is a well-rounded RTS game that brings players into the Sengoku period to lead clans into victory. The game's rewarding management system and compelling mechanics are very enjoyable, but the controller button layout and menus may feel obtuse to some players.
Atelier Marie Remake: The Alchemist of Salburg is a really cute and simple game. Simply cute! The art, music, and neat characters warm my heart with the essence of the good 'ol days of interestingly fresh RPGs. The game's strengths come from the interweaving of simple mechanics and ideas, while the cracks begin to show when said simplicities are individually scrutinized. This remake is a splendid time if it meets your expectations of a simple and quaint time, but can leave those looking for a richer experience yearning for more.
The System Shock remake is a faithful re-imagining of the original 1994 title. The remake offers updated graphics, gameplay, and control. What holds the game back is how committed it is to be a faithful remake, which ultimately makes it alienating for new players and fans of the immersive sim genre. But if you're a fan of the System Shock franchise, then the remake is the definitive way to play System Shock.
Trinity Trigger is a simple game with a simple goal: Recreate the feeling of classic 90s RPGs. It's simple, for better and for worse. Level design, presentation, and ambition mostly suffer. However, the simplicity makes the gameplay and story really satisfying in a familiar way. In such a way that feels like catching up with an old friend. It's familiar but some things are new and different. You get a rush of nostalgia and pure enjoyment during your journey through Trinitia.
Rally Adventure is a fun ride but doesn't bring much new to the table. If you simply want more Forza Horizon 5, this DLC will likely suffice. However, if you are looking for something that will shake up the formula a bit more, this expansion may leave you feeling underwhelmed.
Wanted: Dead is as befuddling as it is bloody. Players will find the plot of Soliel's slasher/shooter hybrid varying levels of coherent depending on their interpretation. What's undeniable is the fun to be had in its streamlined slaughter. Come for the demanding and gory action gameplay, and stay for the odd voice performances, anime flashbacks, and karaoke with Stefanie Joosten. It's sometimes frustrating, often satisfying, and almost always janky and weird; I can't stop thinking about it.
Despite having a story that beats around the bush, One Piece Odyssey has a lot to offer. With an arduous combat system and engaging equipment system, this game tries to bring new flavors to the RPG genre. We highly recommend JRPG players try One Piece Odyssey, or else you'll be missing out.
Samurai Maiden is a really fun girls sword-fighting action game that focuses more on characters and combat than a strong narrative experience. The fully voiced dialogue, frantic combat, and endearing cast of characters make for a solid action game experience from D3 Publisher and SHADE. Nintendo Switch performance is lacking with its frame rate stutters and dips, however.
25 hours and a platinum trophy later, Neptunia x Senran Kagura: Ninja Wars was a really fun game from start to finish. As a fan, I hope to see more of Senran Kagura in the future and would like to see both franchises collaborate again. The game’s combat kept me going through those Yomi Training challenges and the story was a blast. The side content is something that might not satisfy players who are eager for side-quests in a traditional RPG. Anyone remotely interested in Ninja Wars should at least check out what Neptunia and Senran Kagura are all about in their respective games. At the end of the game, I definitely wanted more to play through and I think those who pick this game up will feel that same way. There’s a lot of potential for a sequel with room for an even better game, a bigger ninja war!
Adventures of Pip is a fun 2d side scrolling platformer with the twist of changing your moveset on the fly. While I have minor problems with the game it should not be overlooked in the slightest. The charm and gameplay had me wanting to keep exploring Pip's World!
Little Town Hero is Game Freak’s first adventure outside the world of Pokémon. While it falls short in gameplay and randomly generated nightmares, it’s visuals and soundtrack are reminiscent of older Game Freak gems.
The Chaos;Head Noah / Chaos;Child Double Pack provides many hours of thrilling stories and unnerving twists. Although the English release of Chaos;Head Noah is not ideal, it's worth experiencing for fans of visual novels such as Steins;Gate. Chaos;Child is another great entry for the Switch and a worthy sequel with investigation elements. The games would greatly benefit from patches and fixes.
Paper Mario: The Origami King should not be overlooked, and is one of the most fun Switch games I have played. Fun ways to play, a fun story, and collectibles to collect all make this a game a classic.
The Vale is perhaps one of the most unique titles I have played in recent memory. Hopefully, more developers can take some notes when it comes to making accessible games. It may be a very short adventure, but it's one I won't soon forget.
Berserk Boy provides a fast-paced and easily replayable experience for those on the lookout for a new side scroller to play. While it doesn't necessarily test the player's skills too much, the core mechanics make the game a joy to play. There's a lot of charm and passion here that ultimately makes Berserk Boy a worthwhile purchase.
Tomb Raider I-III Remastered proves that there is still a lot to love about Core Design's vision of the franchise. While there are noticeable issues, these don't break what is otherwise still a fantastic experience for those who are willing to look past them. Perhaps future Tomb Raider games should take some notes.
Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island is the best Mystery Dungeon game. It's absolutely heaping with mechanical depth and a breadth of content. The gameplay requires acute focus and a smart mind in order to progress. Items and enemies have a staggeringly high amount of interactivity that makes exploring even more engaging. Those who don't like roguelikes or strategic RPGs may not enjoy the randomness, as poor luck or focus can ruin a run in a flash. The game's story and characters aren't nearly as deep as the gameplay, but they offer some enjoyable respite from the challenging gameplay.
UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH II Sys:Celes is a fantastic fighting game that blends intricate storytelling with a complex yet rewarding combat system. It's standout features include a unique “take-control” replay system, comprehensive training tools for newcomers, and extensive character customization options. While the game’s ambitious narrative may challenge new players, it's overall presentation, immersive gameplay, and thoughtful design make it an exceptional choice for both new and veteran players of fighting games!
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is a fantastic introduction to the Metroidvania genre. Despite a predictable story and graphical oddities, the game's accessibility options, unique gameplay, and thrilling level design make it a great choice for anyone hoping to get into the Metroidvania genre for the first time.
Snowman Story is a short and sweet game where players go on a journey as the titular snowman, Chris. Despite the lackluster gameplay, the game boasts a beautiful art style and with its heartfelt story, it's the perfect way to ring in the Holiday season and pay tribute to the "most wonderful time of the year."
