There are a few necessary elements for a good RPG: easy to understand mechanics, interesting characters, and an engaging story. Unfortunately, Please the Gods failed to impress in 2 of the three categories. Please the Gods is an odd combination of outstanding graphics and mechanics, brought down by lacklustre story and sound, make this one a difficult one to judge. So unfortunately we find the turn-based RNG-reliant combat was too frustrating for the game to be enjoyable. But for someone who enjoys that type of game and is capable of looking past the lacking story elements it’d be good fun.

Mixed - Marooners
Feb 19, 2020

Marooners is party game that made its entrance on the Nintendo Switch. Visualy, the game looks good. The characters are cute, and the levels look well designed. The idea of the gameplay is a good one, but for me, it was just too frantic and quick paced. I can imagine this game being a hoot for younger kids, but for us it didn’t feel very satisfying. Combined with the price, I feel the game is too costly for what is offered.

I’ve played a couple visual novels on the Switch that were both far more expensive and far less fun than Ascendant Hearts. This visual novel plays with anime tropes with an abundant of humor and, most importantly, has a story that actually had me engaged from the get-go. There is quite a bit of fan service in the game, which is surprising when you consider the age rating. If you’re a fan of visual novels, then I would definitely recommend checking this one out.

At the Sable family household, Boyo has a high temperature, but his mother tries out a new vitamin. Enter Vita-Boy and Mina-Girl who use their capsule ship to bust bacteria! "Asides from some small problems I found Vitamin Connection to be a fun little co-op game. Some early levels might be a bit slow but the levels and enemies became much more varied afterwards. We didn’t use as much verbal communication as we should have. It took us less than five hours to beat the campaign (perhaps it could be done in four). That said, it has collectables to get bonus missions and the pro campaign. Which shakes things up enough that I’ll be going through that with a different player.

How to even begin with Dark Tower? This title is a a puzzle, top down dungeon crawler RPG – I think. Apparently this type of game exists in a very niche genre according to the internet. But despite the confusion it may cause I’m going to do my best to review this rather unique indie title. Strap on your best cloak because its time to head into a dark dungeon.

It’s a good thing I managed to follow the music by sound because, while the graphics are fun, I really wish there was an option of a plain background while playing. I have an eyesight problem anyway and the bright, cartoony, and constantly shifting background was playing absolute havoc with my sight, often making it impossible for me to see notes coming until they hit the piano keys and then it was too late to respond. It’s a shame because I love the art style in the cutscenes, but during play it’s just overwhelming and headache-inducing.

Have you ever wanted to be like your favorite superhero Captain Underpants? Okay…maybe he’s not your favorite superhero (he was definitely mine as a kid), but I’d say he’s definitely on par with all the Marvel and DC heroes out there. Anyway, if you’ve ever coveted underwear related superpowers or even if you’re just someone who gets a good laugh out of butt jokes, then, my friend, this may be the perfect game for you. Brief Battles is a multiplayer party game that has you assume the role of a pink sausage like thing(?) and don some magic underwear that will have you soaring, clawing, and shooting snot at your frenemies.

I have to admit folks, me and this game simply didn’t gel. At first I was worried entering blind with no attachment would lessen my experience, but it seems my disappointment has been equally shared by fans alike. I also defend that a game should do a solid job of supporting its source material, even a simple tie-in should never settle itself as a lesser package. Despite this, there are some things this game does. The combat is of solid construct...

Short but sweet, just that introductory screen already screams Resident Evil, and the rest of the game plays up to that. You’re running around a mansion, killing/avoiding zombies and solving puzzles in an attempt to get out. As you traverse the mansion you’ll find notes and diary entries that help flesh out the background, which is always a nice touch, but it didn’t quite go deep enough. Unfortunately, nothing really made me empathise with or connect to the main character which for me is a big thing in any game. It feels like Heaven Dust has tried so hard to emulate Resident Evil that it’s stunted it’s own potential;

In 2020 traditional puzzle games aren’t exactly flying off of the shelves. I’ve spoken about issues with contemporary puzzle games before and I want to preface by saying that 7th Sector is exciting because it is pushing boundaries. It is difficult, it is atmospheric, and it tries to aim high. if you’re a fan of puzzle games with a world that isn’t merely superficial, and a decent story to match, playing through the brain demanding world of 7th Sector is, ironically, a no-brainer.

Do you ever pick up a game with the intent to play just a level or two, then look at your watch and realise you’ve been playing for hours? That’s what Depixtion did to me, and I’m not even mad about it. I absolutely love this game, and can’t recommend it highly enough for any fellow puzzle fans!

When I first saw ads of Ciel Fledge, I didn’t think much of its story. Instead, I was too focused on the game’s very interesting premise of raising a daughter. What I didn’t realize was that this game has a beautifully fleshed out story that really grounds your and Ciel’s relationship in this dystopian world full of mysteries.

Mousecraft presents itself in a lovely polished package, under the ever watchful eyes of Schrödinger the cat who adds some character and humor to the game. The game has addicting gameplay that gives you a sense of satisfaction once the mice make it safely to the block of cheese. You’ll not find anything new or mind blowing in the game but you will find a charming and entertaining puzzle game which fits the Nintendo Switch purrfectly!!

Blood Will Be Spilled sets out to be both a tactical shooter and a platformer, unfortunately it doesn’t do a great job of either. With slow platforming that requires speed, and shoot outs with fly-brains. While there’s a few bugs, only the death animation one actually impacts one’s ability to play the game. Even with those annoyances I enjoyed my time to some extent but was left disappointed by the end.

Apparently, grass-like hair can grow over all sorts of objects, and even blanket them! At least that’s the case in the Hair Mower 3D game for Switch. Sometimes you just want to play something light that doesn’t require much brainpower. This is where Hair Mower 3D comes in with breezy, effortless gameplay.

I know that I’ve spent the last few paragraphs criticizing Reed Remastered but I do want you to know that it’s a worthwhile experience if you’re a fan of platformers. I took it to task mainly because I think with some adjustments it could have been a solid game for the Switch. As ports go, it is well done and is a good game to begin with. Because of this, it could have been so much more and the steps to becoming more would have been few.

This is a very strange game, and I can’t rate it very highly due to the confusion in the story. However, as an experience I found it fairly remarkable. The drawings, motion, and atmospheric soundtrack made it something I won’t be forgetting anytime soon. If I ever find a better explanation of what the story is, I may go back and try it again to see if I can follow along better. I would not be averse to wandering around this surreal environment again, and the nifty time travel feature you unlock at the end makes that a very inviting prospect.
