Starbit's Reviews

Jul 12, 2022

Its gameplay is simple and intuitive but very fun, and it's in combining this with the myriad of tracks and customization options that Mechanic Battle truly becomes a game all racing fans with a Nintendo Switch should pay attention to.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is rather unexpected in the sense that it's a prequel of a game that hasn't been released yet, but that doesn't prevent it from having a great plot and outstanding characters. It does take its time to gather pace, however, which requires some patience until the game shows all its value, but the most committed players will be duly rewarded with Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising until the next game arrives.

The Cruel King and the Great Hero brings us an RPG with a charming and gorgeous art style, coupled with a plot that's very appealing and a gameplay that's designed to be accessible for players less versed in this kind of games. At the same time, more experienced players might feel put off by the game's accessibility and rather slow pace, but The Cruel King and the Great Hero puts up a good effort that would only benefit from a more in-depth combat system and faster pacing.

7 / 10 - Chocobo GP
May 7, 2022

Chocobo GP marks the return of racing games based on these beloved Final Fantasy characters and this is nothing short of a very welcome new effort in this line, with a large and varied cast, as well as an immense amount of content to unlock. The gameplay is fairly simple and accessible, the main campaign acts as a great motivator to keep us going and the online multiplayer is a charm. Chocobo GP is a game that will keep its players around the screen for many fun hours.

Assassin's Creed: The Ezio Collection is the first time that these three games can be experienced on a Nintendo console and the result is nothing but positive. Other than the value of playing the three games starring Ezio, it's possible to enjoy the improvements from one game to the other and its many hours of action, as well as the two short films included in the collection. Not all is perfect and some visual choices, as well as the presence of some outdated mechanics, will raise eyebrows but this is a great opportunity to experience three Assassin's Creed classics, whether for the first time or as a revisit.

Super Arcade Football does a great job at creating a nostalgic experience that's able to channel one of football's most famous gaming series, and with a simple, accessible, as well as fast-paced gameplay what we get is a game that might not be the most in-depth football experience ever made, but it certainly manages to build a fun and enjoyable game. Pity for solo players, though, who due to a poor AI will find themselves bored compared to their multiplayer peers.

River City Girls Zero presents us with the original 1994 game that shows where the characters' stories began. A fun, intuitive beat'em-up with a lot of plot, but which also shows that it doesn't follow its contemporaries when it comes to pacing and lifespan - indeed, this game feels too short and it advances too slowly. A full remake would have been a better option, but as it is River City Girls Zero is an enjoyable beat'em-up that fans of the genre will like to get their hands on.

Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX 2 does not represent any major departures compared to its predecessor, and if that may sound negative it's also not necessarily harmful - after all, the gameplay mechanics remain fun and well executed, the boss fights are very challenging, and the game's presentation is a marvel to look at. The plot is without a doubt the game's biggest flaw, and even though action-platformers are usually given a pass when it comes to the plot, it would be good in this case if the story could feature less often. With all that said, Luminous Avenger iX 2 is great fun and fans of both the original and the Mega Man X series will find plenty to enjoy here.

This sequel features a very well crafted plot and characters, which are two of the game's biggest assets, as well as an absolutely magnificent soundtrack and an improved combat system. At the same time, The Caligula Effect 2 doesn't do as well when it comes to its level design, where it's often difficult to tell one level from another, and while the soundtrack is exquisite its repetition in some moments can make it very tiresome. This sequel represents an improvement over the original on several elements, but it could have been even better.

Super Animal Royale brings a welcome approach to the battle royale genre of games and bears a clothing that makes it accessible for all age groups, thus toning down the more violent inclinations of its peers. This doesn't mean Super Animal Royale is a game for kids only though, far from it - its frantic, intense gameplay and relatively short bouts of play make it perfect for anyone looking for a fun-packed experience, with the additional advantage of crossplay between platforms.

7 / 10 - Cris Tales
Dec 15, 2021

The exploration and interaction with the other characters are marvelous, and the game's visual style is nothing short of charming. At the same time, the game's combat system, with a lot of wasted time and too many random encounters, can make the experience less enjoying and Cris Tales would certainly benefit from fewer such instances and a more fluid combat.

While this choice may be unorthodox, Astria Ascending does a marvelous job at providing its players with a finely executed combat system, as well as a very engaging sense of character progression. Completionists too will enjoy clearing every single path for the development of the game's characters. Set amid a visually gorgeous world, Astria Ascending could have invested more in its plot, which is rather generic and unoriginal, but fans of JRPGs who can look beyond that will find a very fun and absorbing work landing on their Nintendo Switch.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl do a very good job at fulfilling their primary mission: to bring the fourth generation of Pokémon to the contemporary age. They should have gone further, though, as the lack of creative freedom and clinging to the original formulae happen at the expense of adding new elements. This is not to say that this effort is not a great addition to the Nintendo Switch catalogue, far from that - what made the original games fantastic is still here and there are indeed improvements to some of the original mechanics, but the approach followed was perhaps a tad too conservative for what's expected of a Pokémon remake.

With its in-depth but still accessible combat system and a great look when it comes to its visual worlds and character depiction, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl needs nevertheless to improve its technical performance given its propensity to fluidity issues. Performance issues notwithstanding, this is a great package of fan service and those with a taste for Nickelodeon animation series will be delighted with this effort.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic on the Nintendo Switch is a conversion work that was perfectly carried out and which brings the much beloved RPG to a new format in all its glory. Fans of the series and of the original game will appreciate this effort, even if the original's point and click elements are gone and there is no use for the Nintendo Switch touch screen. At the same time, this won't captivate members of the public outside the original fans, given how outdated some of the gameplay mechanics have become.

Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water brings back a game from seven years ago under the shape of a remaster with additional content. This survival horror brings its fair share of fear-inspiring tense moments, as well as intertwined character stories and very good level design that encourages players to explore. Its control system needs to be tweaked, though, as the actions should be better mapped, but while there are occasional performance issues, this is an overall great work, and one that deserves its place in the Nintendo Switch.

7 / 10 - Ultra Age
Nov 20, 2021

High paced action, with climatic boss fights, a sharp and slick weapon management system, and a very welcoming combat system aren't harmed by the game's rather dated graphics and its underachieving plot, and the fun that can be extracted from this experience has made Ultra Age more than earn its place within the Nintendo Switch catalogue.

Although the main mechanics remain the same, there's a new addition to the gameplay that distinguishes this final chapter from its predecessors - here players will incarnate different groups of characters and help each other in the exploration process. This adds a new layer of variety to the game, but also slows down its pacing. While not everyone will embrace this dimension, Mary Skelter Finale is a worthy ending to the trilogy, and one that can be enjoyed by veterans and newcomers.

7 / 10 - Trigger Witch
Aug 30, 2021

Trigger Witch brings together elements from adventure games and twin-stick shooters in a rather unusual intersection but one which is worthy of praise, as the combat is fun and the locations are vivid and colourful. The game's puzzles are not the most captivating and the sound component could be better but overall, this is a game that will catch the eye of both adventure and twin-stick shooter fans.
