NZGamer's Reviews

Dec 6, 2013

Deadfall Adventures does little to right this wrong. Its gameplay is tedious and lacks imagination. Its narrative experience is immature and poorly executed. When it comes to good adventure titles, gamers are spoilt for choice. Deadfall Adventures is just spoilt.

4 / 10.0 - NBA Live 14

If you want a next-gen basketball game, buy NBA 2K14 instead.

The game is breathtakingly simple, polished to perfection, and tonnes of fun - by yourself or with friends. The only reason it's not getting a perfect 10 is because I miss the story elements, and some of the bosses were just far too easy to overcome.

Overall, Need for Speed Rivals is a great game, but one held back by some disappointing, avoidable flaws.

5 / 10.0 - Powerstar Golf
Dec 17, 2013

I've reflected this in the score. If you LOVE golf games, feel free to bump that number up as high as you like, but for me it sits in the middle of our score band, nothing bad about it, but nothing great either.

90% brilliant, 10% excruciatingly tiresome.

Overall: If you’re a One Piece noob, it’s a 6/10. It plays fine but suffers from a ‘this is for the fans’ attitude. This of course could also be a positive thing, and if you’re a huge fan of the series it’s probably going to be closer to a 7 or even an 8/10.

4.4 / 10.0 - LocoCycle
Dec 29, 2013

I reviewed this on the Xbox One and, in hindsight, LocoCycle would probably be a better Xbox 360 title. It certainly doesn't show off any next-gen prowess, so don't buy this game to show off your new hardware.

8.5 / 10.0 - Nihilumbra
Jan 7, 2014

Nihilumbra is a fantastic example of what can happen when developers are willing to try new things, and focus on just what it is that makes videogames a unique medium. Life may have no intrinsic meaning, but the team at BeautiFun Games seem to have found meaning in making games, and for that, I am grateful.

2.8 / 10.0 - X Rebirth
Jan 8, 2014

The interfaces and NPCs have this amazing ability to curdle every sense in your body, and at the end of it, you just wish you never attempted any of it in the first place.

Winter Olympics looks like it wants you to have fun; the bright colours, decent roster of events and characters, and the chipper commentator all make it seem like it's capable of creating entertainment. The poor online leaderboard, the confusing menu systems, and awkward control schemes, however, make the game a five-minute wonder that'll make you fear the next time Mario and Sonic get their friends together.

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, is certainly not a misnomer - if you're picking up the game for the first time, this is absolutely the one to go for. It's the same brilliant game that came out last year, all polished up and looking its finest. For returning adventurers, on the other hand, there's so little in the way of new content that there's not much point buying the new version unless you had an urge to replay it anyway.

8.5 / 10.0 - Blackguards
Feb 5, 2014

Be in no doubt that this game is tough to play, and - in places - with see you reloading over and over and again as you figure out the solution to some of the more complex encounters. There's a significant amount of gameplay hours and multiple endings, which is reflected in the price, but I would argue that it represents value for money if you like turn based tactical combat.

7.1 / 10.0 - Thief
Mar 6, 2014

Thief isn't terrible, it's just not as good as other games, so in a way I want to say leave Thief for a while; come back to it when it's on sale, wait for it to be a steal.
