Fans of the genre will be fully immersed and giddy about being able to experience something like this, and it is something to behold visually even for those who don't come with prior knowledge. Unfortunately, those visuals are best experienced on systems other than the Nintendo Switch, which only makes the monotonous gameplay more evident. Incredible storytelling, though cliché, boosts Trek to Yomi towards something worth experiencing, especially when the game can be beaten in an afternoon.

Trek to Yomi is a solid product set in feudal Japan, faithfully portraying the Bushido lifestyle and some more general themes such as grief, the consequences of a wrong decision and the complex choice between love, duty and revenge. The title by Leonard Menchiari and Flying Wild Hog may not be such a rich experience in terms of gameplay, but embarking on this cinematic and historical journey filled with content about Japanese mythology pays off — and a lot — the few hours invested.

An intensely cinematic game, Trek to Yomi enhances the action-platformer genre with a rich story and beautiful design that leaves a lasting impression.

It’s a shame that, for whatever reason, screenshots have been disabled on the Nintendo Switch, because I would love to show firsthand that there is little difference between the Xbox and handheld versions. Still, it overall didn’t affect my play, and the end result is still the same: a battlefield soaked in blood, a boy fulfills his debt, and the player is left torn between relief and unease. Was this truly the only path to redemption? Or was the loss worth the price of revenge?

Despite its action mostly being on the middling side, the game’s artistic style and story make it a compelling experience

Trek to Yomi is a likeable game that doesn't outstay its welcome. If the visuals on Switch were better, it would be an easy one to recommend.

At just a handful of hours, Trek to Yomi sadly still manages to outstay its welcome. It asks its visuals to carry the gameplay, but their novelty wears off before the final act. This is particularly true on Switch, where dropped resolution and simplified scenery steal some of the magic and ugly character close-ups blemish the overall aesthetic. As imaginatively as Yomi is realised, the game still feels like a trek.

Trek to Yomi is one heck of a game that sets out to pay homage to the great samurai films of the 1950s and it certainly achieves this and then some. With a bold art direction that perfectly resonates with mid-twentieth-century film-making, it is one of the most well put together games in the indie scene. Its breathtaking scenery and equally impressive soundtrack create an atmosphere that encapsulates the Edo era, with the only downsides being the most nit-picky of details.

Trek to Yomi has a way of pulling you in with the visuals and then pushing you away with lackluster gameplay combined with performance issues and forgettable narrative.

It's clear that Flying Wild Hog Studio didn't have a big goal in releasing Trek to Yomi. TTY could have become one of the best of 2022 with more variety in gameplay and avoiding repetitions; But the result turned out to be something contrary to the expectations of the fans.

Trek to Yomi is a dramatic journey of revenge and redemption, with a poor narrative aspect and a repetitive and unbalanced combat system. The developer put all their effort in the beautiful aesthetics and sound aspect of the game, resulting in an immersive, yet not totally satisfying, experience.

I can recommend Trek to Yomi to those who want to experience a dark story. But even though visuals are eye-candy, I gotta admit gameplay is kind of a letdown.

Trek to Yomi brings Kurosawa's movies to the world of gaming. Unfortunately, though, it doesn't add anything new to the formula. Gameplay is, at best, mediocre. The game also dramatically suffers from many design mistakes and unnecessary elements. All of these are reasons to skip this game. However, it still deserves a chance.

I had my eye on Trek to Yomi as soon as I saw it was coming to Xbox Game Pass. The trailer completely sold it to me, a black and white voyage fighting as a samurai in what appears to be feudal Japan. This was an adventure in which I felt compelled to partake. Read my Rapid Review below to find out if it lived up to expectations.

Trek to Yomi is a sidescroller with strong influences from old Kurosawa films. Hiroki sets out to avenge his sensei with the help of Aiko. Fight your way through Hell to confront the warlord Kagarou. With a price tag of twenty euros, Trek to Yomi is more than worth a positive assessment. A must play for the true Indie fan.

Trek to Yomi is not an overly long adventure either. Outside of the standard combat there is some light exploration and puzzle solving with a few boss battles tossed in for good measure. The story is what kept me chugging through to the end. It is boilerplate but interesting. I wanted to know how things concluded so I pushed through the repetitive combat. Trek to Yomi is a game that on the surface seems way more interesting than it actually is. It feels like a good Game Pass title that occupied me for a weekend, I just wish it was a bit more in-depth when it comes to the combat itself.

Trek to Yomi has lived up to its hype and has changed side-scrolling gaming for the future. It isn’t on the same level as relative games like Ghost of Tsushima, and some shortcomings drag it down a little, but this game has done more than enough to get your attention at least.

Trek To Yomi is the most perfect 2.5D homage you'll find to Japanese mythology and culture, but above all with a special focus on the cinematic achievements of Akira Kurosawa, delivering wonderfully well, and stealing full credit for the simple and rather repetitive gameplay that stays with us for about five hours of gameplay.

Trek to Yomi is an absolute blast that provides plenty of memorable moments throughout its 4-5 hours main story. Trek to Yomi may be as frustrating as it is rewarding, but it will still be the best £16/$20 you’ll spend this year.
