What Sega needed to do with Samba de Amigo: Party Central was to ensure that the foundations were solid, the controls worked as intended, and the gameplay loop was fun enough both on your own or with friends. This game is an absolute blast. It retains that wacky, experimental vibe from the Dreamcast era, with utterly ludicrous visuals, a bunch of nonsense blasting your senses, and enough content to keep you busy for a while… at least until the release of the next song pack.

Samba de Amigo Party Central is a great time thanks to its accessible controls, local coop fun and the huge amount of songs to enjoy. The difficulty is a bit inconsistent however.

Samba de Amigo: Party Central marks the return of Sega's rhythm music franchise. Amigo is back, the Brazilian monkey who with his maracas must get the best score in the 42 songs available in principle - more via DLC -. Sega offers us a very good musical rhythm game that, thanks to its festive appearance, is also ideal as a party game. You have to adapt a little to motion control and the tracklist may be less Latin than in previous installments but this does not prevent Amigo from returning in style.

Samba de Amigo: Party Central is the classic game you'd hardly start to get a solo game, but it's a must-have at a New Year's Eve, birthday, or any house party. You'll challenge each other to see who's the best dancer, mock whoever gets all the steps wrong, laugh, have fun, and sweat. Then, when the fiesta is over, you'll probably put it away until the next opportunity. Virtual maracas work very well and do not suffer from any input lag, and the only perplexity at the moment concerns the playlist, which includes neither many Latin hits nor many famous songs.

Any grievances mainly involve user interface choices and the occasional motion control hiccup, but there's nothing here that ultimately derails the experience. It's fun, it's entertaining, and it's sometimes a workout. Samba de Amigo: Party Central doesn't shake up its formula drastically, but it's still a blast.

Samba de Amigo: Party Central is a perfect fit for Nintendo Switch. Its frantic and colorful game modes are the perfect ingredient for an evening with friends, and while I miss game modes to play with a single pair of Joy-Con, if all your friends bring the controllers you have hours and hours of fun and laughter ahead of you.

Reading back through this review it sounds negative, but that’s because I’m coming to it from the perspective of someone who generally plays single-player and is passionate about the skill tester side of rhythm games. Samba de Amigo is one of those rare rhythm games that isn’t expressly for me. I do love its quality as a party game, and a drinking game, and so it’ll stay firmly in my Switch’s memory. It’s just that, even despite the cracking soundtrack, it’s also not going to join the rotation of rhythm games I use to de-stress and tune out of the world with.

Samba de Amigo: Party Central is an easy sell for Samba De Amigo fans, but it’s also a must-buy for anyone who enjoys rhythm games. It’s got that fast-paced quirky gameplay to keep novelty-seekers on their toes with a tracklist that pretty much anyone will find familiar. Its single-player campaign is challenging while its multiplayer mode amuses — especially that World Party mode where the last monkey standing takes all. Whether you’re a long-time fan of the franchise or testing out your maracas for the first time, Samba de Amigo: Party Central will keep you shaking for hours.

Samba de Amigo: Party Central is a welcome return to a quirky classic rhythm game. While musically it's now more Selena Gomez than Selena, and some technical issues threaten to get in the way, the game remains excellent.

Samba de Amigo: Party Central is that game that we will never want to lose sight of, either to sweat a little or to have a pleasant time when we have a visit. It's so entertaining and the song selection is so varied, it's easy to forget about the problems with the controls.

If you want to spend fun time with family and friends, you can definitely buy it to enrich your Switch collection, as it is not really an expensive game. However, if you were expecting a revolution in rhythm titles, that's something you're not going to find; but we can say that at least it entertains the people.

Samba de Amigo: Party Central's party does have a few stumbles, such as the controllers instability and the lack of continuity in its narrative core. However, those factors don't represent an absence of fun. With an attractive concept and a ton of musical energy, this title deserves a chance for those who want to gather their friends or just hit the floor with the incredible ability to transform the Joy-Con into the iconic maracas of the Amigo mascot.
