La Orden del Pixel's Reviews

The legendary franchise is back with Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons, a delightful gameplay, pixel art and an irresistible chiptune soundtrack. A videogame that puts Billy and Jimmy Lee in their rightful place: among the beat 'em up elite and in the top 3 games to enjoy with friends.

Roots of Pacha is an excellent video game, which I enjoyed a lot and that despite sharing several similarities, knows how to move away from the path of Stardew Valley. A title that embraces the roots of the genre but adding unique systems that suit it wonderfully, resulting in a very solid proposal.

Yes - 30XX
Aug 9, 2023

30XX is the path that Keiji Inafune or Capcom could have taken, but never did. Luckily Batterystaple Games decided to work on their 20XX proposal and develop a game that surpasses it in every way. One that adapts the classic Mega Man formula to the roguelite genre with a fun and polished proposal.

With Blasphemous 2, The Game's Kitchen once again proves that sequels can not only be good but excellent, with an exquisite metroidvania that surpasses its predecessor in everything: from exploration and combat, to its interesting story and technical section.

Fort Solis, a dense and visually spectacular cinematic adventure that manages to transmit an overwhelming tension that keeps us on the edge of our seat until the very end.

Sea of Stars is a turn-based RPG that proves that the genre doesn't live by big productions alone, offering one of the best and most rewarding experiences of the year.

Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon is both perfect and not. I don't think it's the best thing FromSoftware has created in the last decade, and yet I feel that one of the studio's greatest achievements was to go for it. I don't consider it the best game of 2023 either, but at the same time I feel it's the GOTY. The sixth installment of this mythical saga is more Armored Core than I expected.

Invader Studios brings us a new instalment of its survival horror saga with Daymare: 1994 Sandcastle, a prequel with nods to the classics of the genre and some original problems. A fun adventure that is frustrating at times, and with a little exploited potential that I can only recommend to survival horror fans.

Yes - Gunbrella
Sep 13, 2023

Gunbrella is an interesting side-scroller that offers polished gameplay and a precise control system. The noir-punk theme, coupled with a rough atmosphere, make Doinksoft's work one that I recommend, both for fans of hard-boiled stories and for those who like a lighthearted approach to the genre that offers a lot of fun thanks to its ideas and creativity.

The Swordman Studio surprises with Wandering Sword, an RPG with a robust progression system and a unique setting inspired by mythical Chinese martial arts stories. A solid, interesting and unique title, with a storyline steeped in a number of wuxia clichés, but still enjoyable.

TMNT: Shredder's Revenge - Dimension Shellshock manages to perfectly capture an elusive essence that was lost in 1993. The one that dozens of other games tried to recreate without success. Working together with Dotemu paid off, delivering not only one of the best entries in the series, but the definitive Ninja Turtles videogame.

Moonstone Island is a lovely game that combines farm simulation with creature gathering, cards and turn-based combat, resulting in a colourful and varied mix. It's an inclusive and extremely wholesome game, full of nice details and a progression curve that feels very much in keeping. An excellent debut for Studio Supersoft.

Yes - Starfield
Sep 27, 2023

Starfield, Bethesda's new RPG is already among us, with a proposal that, although it falls back on old vices, also stands out for its virtues, which reach their highest point. But also a video game that is frustrating, not because it is bad, but because it is evident that it has the potential to be much better.

Pizza Possum, the work of Cosy Computer, is a very fun and accessible videogame that appeals to our mischievous side and, above all, to our appetite, with a cartoonish art and a soundtrack that combines well with the theme, which make up the beautiful ribbon that ends up wrapping the game.

Fading Afternoon, Yeo's new title is a beat 'em up with a unique narrative that conveys a range of emotions through the gameplay itself. While it's not a game for everyone, it's still a gem that's worth giving a chance.

Crimson Tactics: The Rise of The White Banner is a tactical RPG inspired by classics of the genre that, although it is technically polished, its irregularities in the gameplay do not allow it to shine. Those who are looking for a high-quality exponent of the genre will have to wait for those future patches that the title is crying out for.

The Lamplighters League, the new game from Harebrained Schemes, is a fun and interesting adventure, which stumbles in its attempt to put a twist on the turn-based tactics genre. The characters and setting are its strongest points, while the combat is fun and varied thanks to the abilities of each agent, which makes the game despite its rough edges, enjoyable.

The Broken Spear team has managed to develop a title that, although it doesn't invent anything, offers a series of very entertaining missions that manage to keep you hooked for a long time. It still has a long way to go. Although Beneath Oresa has a great potential, it can undoubtedly be exploited even more.

Vlad Circus: Descend Into Madness is a title that reminds us that madness can wear big shoes, white gloves, have a pale face and a red nose, but be far from making us laugh. It is a delicate title that brings together several elements to shape its mechanics and thus keep players in suspense. It is a shame that at times it is inevitable to disconnect from the central axis by entertaining us with actions that ultimately do not end up defining the protagonist or his intentions.
