Balzekas Alien: Isolation Review

Nov 13, 2024
It's bonkers to see people rating it so highly. I mean they must be either into alien franchise or space themes. After watching the latest Alien movie and being utterly disappointed with it, I decided to give the game a try. I am huge fan of horror games and the beginning was a complete Outlast game, later adding crafting and human hostiles who also hunt you down. Well, it's 2014 game but bugs and world breaking fallacies are all over the place. Starting from that humans are again, clueless just like aliens. Many games have that, but to me humans should represent rationality since the first person is a human who figures how to escape, outsmart creatures and survive. Same was with Outlast, however, the setting already sets you to expect illogical behaviour from asylum patients and monsters. It not only does not break the game, quite the opposite, it terrifies you because you cannot understand them. This however, does the opposite job by making humans look dumb, like a situation where 3 of the npcs lined up to shoot you through the vent and keeps hitting the corner even though you are exposing your whole body to their aim. Lazy map design covered in suitcases to keep you at a strict linear path. This again creates all sorts of question for developers, why bother creating this jaw dropping world just for you to be unable to explore any of it. I was never a reader during games and it is hard to invest into cut scenes when the game itself has yet to attract me into the story. Again, referring to any other horror, Outlast is the best comparison by year and model. The latter brings you to immediate curiosity and that something big is being kept away from the outside world. Yes, there is quite some documents and information suggested to be read. Me playing first time, I never bothered doing that and yet the game didn't fail to tell the story visually, just for me to play it again and recapture every detail because I knew I could get more out of this incredibly put story. Meanwhile, this game does not even take my attention on an entry level. First I talk with random people I do not care about, then some guy who greets you at gun point just to become a friend over no matter what you did or did not do, everything was in a cut scene. It's more like a movie, not a game. All I do, is break through doors and pull levers, but nothing contributes to overall gameplay. Just a monotonous bland space Outlast game with no visual storytelling.
