Pros + An engaging and powerful story that explores themes such as grief, parenthood, vengeance, trust (or lack thereof), and more. + Intuitive combat that is endlessly fun and relatively simple to master. + Stunning visuals and sound design that only enhance the wonderful experience. Some of the most gorgeous environments I’ve ever explored in a video game. + Strong and relatable characters that make a great story even better, particular Kratos, Mimir, and Baldur. + Really clever use of exploration and environmental storytelling, with puzzles and useful items/lore galore. + Spectacle, spectacle, spectacle. There were multiple moments in this game were I audibly freaked out over how cool the set pieces were. Tremendous game design. Cons - This is a hardcore nitpick, but I found Atreus genuinely grating at times. His immaturity obviously is a key aspect of the story, but I think it was ham-fisted at times and treaded a bit closer to “annoying”than I’d like. VERDICT: GoW is a brilliant story that takes you to mesmerizing scenic highs and through powerful emotional lows, with engaging combat and activities sandwiched between. It’s an unforgettable experience and one of the greatest games I’ve ever played.
