Chaos Blue Prince Review
Apr 18, 2025
A very unique, multilayered, profound and engaging experience. My personal favorite of the year, maybe of the decade. I doubt any other videogame will take away the game of the year place in my 2025 private podium.
With that out of the way, I have a few considerations about it.
First, I understand perfectly well anyone who says it can be boring and frustrating and not their type of game. Comprehensible. It is not a game for everyone. I cannot back up the criticisms that denote this game as “overrated” or “superficial”, though. Blue Prince is an amazing feat of game design, world building and puzzle construction. One may not like the style, the formula or even the narrative and lore behind it all, but I don’t think it is fair to call it overrated. I think this game should receive all the praise it is currently receiving. I suspect that many people who call it superficial may not have been able to scratch the surface of its contents. However, maybe they did and even then it did not click with them. As I said, that is fine and understandable, but even these people should appreciate (I can only hope) the effort and dedication involved in the creation of this game.
Second, this is a game of a very peculiar nature. It has roguelike, deck building, puzzle solving and scenery driven lore elements combined in a way that, I think it is safe to assume, has never been done before. Sure, “Mist” and “Riven” have done similar puzzle driven stories and are certainly homaged by this game. And “The Witness” is a beautiful and noteworthy predecessor in the environmental puzzle concept. Still, the combination of all the mechanics and nuances “Blue Prince” brings to the table seems very specific to me.
Third, this is one of those games that truly rewards your paranoia of thinking there are puzzles everywhere in the world around you. And that, more than anything, scratches an itch for me like no other game has ever before.
I am in love, I am obsessed and I am happy to spend countless hours solving puzzles and learning about this intriguing world. My recommendation, to anyone remotely interested, is to play the game and try to indulge it for at least a dozen runs. I think it is worth the effort and the time. If nothing else, you can at least get a glimpse of this that will certainly become a big paradigm defining point for the gaming zeitgeist.
Have fun, enjoy yourself and I leave you with my wishes of good games for everyone.
