ClownyFiesta Dragon Age: The Veilguard Review

Nov 5, 2024
For people who wanted a new isometric RPG (like DA:O or BG3), it's simply a no. Stay away. For people who care about Bioware's way of exposing a story and characters, this is an actual (and unexpected) return to form. After reaching what I believe to be 2/3 of the game/story I have to say this with certainty: Reviewers and players talking about "bad writing" either did not play the game or paid very little attention to it (or just pressed skip on convos/cutscenes). This game has a VERY shaky and jarring start. Due to the presentation of the characters being way too "millennial", (Many of them, in the beginning, converse more in the style of an adult cartoon of the 2010s than a classic broody dark fantasy character), and can be various levels of off-putting for fantasy RPG players, me included. After spending some time on the game, it becomes clear that the general story and character story, due to their impeccably good exposition, are actually very good. Not just okay, but actually on par with and at points better than previous games of the franchise. So, Presentation: MEH, Script and Exposition: YEAH. The rest of the game is above average. Gameplay is action, so it's certainly take it or leave it. 8/10 for an ARPG. (Progression and builds are very well-thought-out and implemented perfectly.) Music is just ok but it fits and helps elevate some scenes. 7/10 Writing would be a 10/10 if not for the presentation. 8/10 Exploration 9/10 Graphics 10/10 Game performance 10/10 As an action RPG, it's an 8/10 As a Dragon Age sequel, it's a 7/10 (about the same as I would give to DAI, but for different reasons)
