Alan Bell's Reviews

A gamer since birth, I basically grew up with games; as I became more aware of my surroundings, they become more complicated - moving from Pong to MMOs as I went from childhood to something... older. My penchant for writing about them lead to various (paid and unpaid) gigs in the industry, and I've worked on the other side (creating games) too, giving me additional insight into how games go from idea to Steam sale.

Should you buy it? Absolutely. Call of Duty remains a fun game to play and for those that are looking for a multiplayer title with legs, Ghosts will certainly sit atop the pile for the next 12 months.

7.5 / 10.0 - Killer Instinct
Nov 18, 2013

For now, our recommendation would be that if you're looking for a fighting game that skimps on story and has just a handful of options, but still delivers tournament-ready credentials, look no further. Killer Instinct is making a brash play at the top table and, as far as we can tell, it's got the goods.

[I]f you've got a next-gen console and you're into racing simulators, it's your only choice - and it's far from a bad one. Just don't expect it to be the "next step" or any kind of evolution of the genre.

It's never dull, not even for a moment, and while technically repetitive (there are so many drug dealers and enemy bases) the variety afforded by both your abilities and the environment ensure that it never feels like a chore to play.

It doesn't matter what you're playing it on: Hearthstone is a fantastic CCG that gets the balance just right and needn't cost players a cent.

A Realm Reborn is one of the biggest reversals in fortune we've seen for a game in many, many years. A must for MMO and Final Fantasy fans alike.

Magic 2015 is a step backwards for the Planeswalkers series, and could potentially prove a costly misstep for Stainless Games given the recent, celebrated arrival of Blizzard in the CCG genre.

With around five hours of content and a more engaging story, inFamous: First Light is easy to recommend to players familiar with the universe. New players should consider starting elsewhere.

Skylanders: Trap Team is packed full of clever ideas and sharp design. It's well presented and well executed, but be warned: if you let your guard down, it'll also crit your credit card for massive damage.

9.5 / 10.0 - Sunset Overdrive
Oct 27, 2014

As an Xbox One exclusive Sunset Overdrive is a real coup for Microsoft, a must-buy for anyone with the system, and for those without as good a reason as any to consider acquiring one.

It looks like Zelda and plays like Dynasty Warriors. Yep, it does pretty much what it says on the tin.

Warlords of Draenor is WoW at its very best, a return to and step beyond form for the behemoth MMO.

What's here works well enough, but it lacks soul, and if there's any motivation to continue it's only that you want to see it through - a damning indictment for any game.

Super Stardust Ultra is basically a prettier and marginally expanded version of Super Stardust HD that can only really be recommended to newcomers.

Solid, if far from revolutionary, and well past its used-by date in terms of its treatment of women.

Mortal Kombat X is a mechanically clean and visually grisly release that comes highly recommended for all fans of the fighting genre.
