Crunchi Avowed Review

Feb 21, 2025
A great return to the RPGs of yesteryear, with incredible improvements to the feel of magic, ranged and melee combat. The world design has been vastly improved compared to recent games from this studio, with some crunchy lore to sink your teeth into for fans of prior games in this universe. The exploration feels great, as you enjoy taking in the sights and sound, and the combat's improved feel means it avoids feeling like a chore. Speaking of chores, the progression system is too aggressively balanced on a knife's edge, which I suspect is why many reviewers may be down on this game. It does not lend itself to rushing through the game as doing some side content is practically required and the amount of perk/progression points feel low, like you have to commit to a certain progression path (ie. warrior, wizard, etc). This is fine for an RPG and I don't have a major problem with it, particularly when you take the time to explore and experience the beautiful world they have created. Its also a lot of fun to try to find all the hidden chests and loot. Combat is the best they have ever done, hands down. Excellent. Exploration is the best they have ever done with a gorgeous world (even on my very old graphics card). Writing is good, not great for the main story but the little side stories flesh it out nicely. The game is about exploring a rich, beautiful world and smashing enemies in a very satisfying combat system. With a slightly more forgiving progression system and more fleshed out companions, this would be a 10/10. For now, 9/10, excellent job Obsidian.
